I've suffered from GERD, IBS and FAP (Familial Adenomatous Polyposis - many polyps that have to removed regularly [every 2 years] or will turn cancerous) my entire adult life. Over the years, I've been told to follow a low-fiber diet (during flareups), then a high fiber diet, then a gluten-free diet. I was getting very confused on when to do what. I purchased this book and had just started using the recommendations when I was diagnosed with breast cancer at 45 years old. When I started treatment (surgery first), I halted this eating plan and immediately noticed a difference. I'm back now, trying to concentrate on the foods recommended here. The only digestive distress I am encountering is caused by chemotherapy, not the every day distress I had before. THANK YOU! When chemo is over, I hope to have this be my new eating plan to prevent color cancer or recurrence of breast cancer.

This book is very useful in that it contains many practical tips on how to improve your digestive health. I found it very interesting to see how research has changed, by looking at the extremely complex performance of the human digestive system, in a systemic way. It is extremely technical and I, for one, did not try to memorize, the very large number of enzymes and various biochemical entities that Dr Lipski and her fellow researchers are studying in their complex interaction. One interesting point that is made is that the same problematic symptoms may be due to very different causes calling for very different treatments and that the same underlying problematic causes may and do in fact, evolve into different problems. Dr Lipski explains the differences in this fourth edition v the previous one. Scientific knowledge doubles between every two and three years, so that knowledge is twentyfive times what it was when the first edition was published.I hope that when we go for consultation with our gastro specialist, that he or she have read and understood Dr Lipski's book!

Excellent educational material for getting healthier. Not boring reading, yet factual and informative. If you have any digestive issues... are fighting fatigue... hormonal imbalances... have lymes disease... adrenaline burnout... or just want to be healthier... there is plenty here for you to benefit from. I would recommend this for anyone I know because there is something in here that would benefit us all. Well worth the time to read it.

This book is a revelation. I've read many books on gut health and few are as comprehensive as this one's explanations and solid supplement advice. I've had several aha moments reading Lipski's book directly relevant to my digestive issues and subsequent symptoms - she really integrates her nutritional and physiological knowlege in a manner that is truly relevant to the reader. Highly recommended.

I am obsessed with this book! It’s full of a ton of very useful information about healing your gut and overall health in a natural way. I have IBS and really struggle with it and I bought this book with the intention of mixing natural remedies with a healthy diet to mitigate symptoms. This book has definitely helped me in my gut health journey and I would recommend it to anyone!

I enjoyed this book. It is well written and easy to understand. It is not as technical as some books on the topic which makes it much easier to understand. I learned a vast amount of new information from this book. It offered practical advice/information. After I read it- I had my husband and mother read it -so they could understand my Lupus much better. Definitely worth the price of the book!

Very comforting to read, great book ! Made me cry because of things I've gone through myself

Lots of good info.

If you have Lupus it is worth the read. Especially just knowing there are people out there that deal with this same disease daily. It covers everything to a tee and has some good ideas. It would really help family members to read this one also. It will shed a light on someone who has no clue about Lupus.

Well,since my hands are involved w/my lupus I can't actually READ this book.They need to make these things on audio or readable on the computer.

This book is a decent intro to the topic if you don't know much about it, and definitely gets points for being a quick, easy read. I would recommend it to someone that knows very little (or nothing) about lupus, but not for anyone that has a good knowledge base already. It does contain a lot of good information, but a lot of it is obvious common sense you don't need to pay for (like.. are you tired? rest! or a great way to exercise is to walk!)...

Shockingly shocking! This just arrived. My reaction [one star] is not to the content, which I've barely explored and still believe I'm going to thoroughly enjoy, but is given for the horrible quality of this reprinted version! I bought it partly based on the assurance that it is part of the "Classic Reprint Series" including some stuff about teaming with Microsoft to preserve old and threatened books. This reprint is shockingly shocking! It really looks like somebody had a bad copy from the local library, and then used a bad copy machine to make bad copies of it! Page one (which is numbered page 9 for some reason), for instance, missed the left margin, so the whole page has the left side of the sentence cut off. The author "...embarked on board e British brig Mary Ann, Hampton, master, for the y of Honduras..." Page 10 (remember, these are the first and second pages of the actual text) is such a poor quality copy it can't even be read! The illustrations are fuzzy and have black specs all around them. Today on Amazon it's possible to find the original, in "Used- Very Good" condition volumes 1&2 from 1843, available for $800. Wouldn't it make sense for them to have located the best copy available, copied it with the best technology available and presented that to the happy reader instead of this sorry excuse?

For some reason, Amazon was selling only volume 2 when I bought it for Kindle. I was enthralled at the account of the author's extraordinary 1839 journey from Costa Rica to the Yucatán—while civil war raged throughout Central America—in search of Mayan sites. The author's brilliance and erudition, his dry wit, his affectionate portrayals of locals met en route, his awe and respect for the advanced but ruined civilization he encountered, were enhanced by the meticulous illustrations of Frederick Catherwood.Volume 1 relates the first half of the journey; and, I must say, the lesser half. In its 400+ pages, Stephens and Catherwood explore exactly one Mayan site, Copán. The rest of the pages relate the journey by boat from the U.S. to Belize, onward to Guatemala, overland to the capital, various excursions and diversions, ending with Stephens crossing from Nicaragua to Honduras. A great deal of time is spent on a blow-by-blow account of the civil war which tore Central America, until then a unitary state, into warring fragments. While this would no doubt have fascinated Stephens's contemporary audience, the exhaustive detail may try the patience of all but scholars. Further, plans were underfoot to build a transoceanic canal through Nicaragua; and Stephens spends a great deal of time exploring the region and discussing the plan's feasibility. Up to Teddy Roosevelt's administration, Nicaragua and the Colombian isthmus (now Panama) were both in play as potential sites for such a canal, but we now know how it turned out, and the detail lavished on the losing proposition, again, might strain the lay reader's interest.I would recommend starting with Volume II of this book, and then reading Incidents of Travel in Yucatan. Both are fascinating accounts, chock full of one fascinating Mayan site after another, and offer the thrill of original discovery that Stephens and Catherwood shared during their groundbreaking expeditions.

I have read this book several times and own both the paperback version and the Kindle one. I have recommended it to many friends and have given it as a gift on several occasions as it is a historical must read on Central America.A masterful depiction of Central America in the early 1800's. Easy to read, a travel log that reflects the curiosity of a scholar, but written in a straightforward, easy to read language. Almost naive in some passages, Stephens admires the people and its natural surroundings, describes them vividly from his very American point of view. His relentless commitment to explain and understand better "The Lost Civilization" in Meso-America is a timeless inspiration.Lawyer, Diplomat, Explorer and Entrepeneur, he played a role as a precursor of the Panama Canal, the Panama Isthmus Railroad, which served as a shorter, safer route to California. This books tell us of the times just before big things were about to happen in Central America and at worldwide scale.The contributions of this book to Maya archaeology are huge (the detailed descriptions and beautiful drawings by Frederick Catherwood of Maya sites), basically by putting many archaeological remains later looted in its original context. A must read for archaeology students around the world and for anyone interested in Central America in the 19th Century. Mr. Stephens, your place in history is guaranteed through this book, the others you wrote and your contributions to the cause of a inter-oceanic route through Central America and the advancement of Maya archaeology.

This classic account of John Lloyd Stephens' journey through Central America and Mexico in the 1830s has never been cheaper, but at the "cost" of missing the Catherwood illustrations. What do you want for 99 cents, I know. The text was obviously scanned but not proofed as there are numerous typos. Despite its faults, Stephens' indomitable spirit--persisting through revolution, horrendous roads, stubborn animals, malevolent natives, and the political convulsions endemic to the region--can only leave lesser mortals in awe.Note that this is Vol. 2, and Vol. 1 is not available on Kindle at this time. Vol. 2 opens in the midst of a revolution in Central America, and Stephens refers to characters and events assuming the reader is already familiar with them. Once past the first few chapters, though, we are carried along by unfolding events.

Although I have not finished this book yet, I haven't been able to put it down. I have read a few of the critical reviews that do not like the way that the book is written, because it is an oral history full of quotes that are interwoven together to tell the story of various bands throughout the early 2000s. I personally like the oral history aspect, but my recommendation would be go have a bookmark or page marker at the beginning of the book, because they give a brief description of the individuals being quoted throughout the book. In the first 100 pages, I've found myself flipping back and forth quite a bit, because I was not familiar with some of the journalists, promoters, and founders of the various bars/record labels, and they do not provide much of a bio in the quotes. With that being said, do not let the style of the book dissuade you from purchasing. If you're a fan of music like myself, you will have a hard time taking a break from reading this book.

Don’t let the fact that it starts a little slow put you off the book—It is a fantastic oral history and the participants are being HONEST(the key to a great biography!j great stories about the rise of the Strokes, LCD, Interpol, Vampire Weekend. Cool on the road tales and the requisite sex drugs and rock and roll. Also much about the music and how it was made. Loved the stories about Karen O and the Yeah,Yeah,Yeahs! Definitely a long read but worth every page if you’re a music bio fan, Highly recommend. It’s a love story to that time in New York as well.

I don't even care all that much for some of the bands which this book focuses on (LCD Soundsystem, The Strokes), and I still found it nearly impossible to put down. Jam packed with anecdotes (and LOTS of drugs), the book chronicles both the rise of NY music but the changes the city itself underwent during the time period. It's the second best music book I've ever read (Please Kill Me being the first).

Hard to be objective when I love most the bands represented here, but I devoured this book. All the players are at the table--you can read the description--and somehow Lizzy Goodman's got them talking. Sure the parties are a hook, but read for the inspirations which fueled each band, the 60+ characters represented, and the book-long tribute to a city that seems to give each generation its own little present to keep for themselves (and of course later declare better than anyone else's). Bravo to Lizzy Goodman for obtaining an unfathomable participation rate when a half-count would still have made a good book and, in contrast to one reviewer below in need of an author's presence, I say further kudos to Ms. Goodman for having the wherewithal and total lack of ego to let the voices speak for themselves. Her presence is the book. Brilliant work.

A beautiful/funny/n-depth portrait of this music scene, ever-changing NYC and even humanity in general. I'm absolutely obsessed with this book, and you really get to know these pivotal figures -- so many people's idols -- so intimately.James Murphy's first time doing ecstasy... Matt Berninger talking about how The National couldn't be The Strokes because Converse hurt his back and he "was a New Balance Guy already"... the "profound, unbelievable awkwardness that made [the Killers] seem like they were on drugs" - just lots of dancing, fights, insecurity, hookups, heroine, fun, love, youth and really real, HUMAN moments. And lots of laughs.Really can't say enough good things.

An insider's peak behind the curtain of a burgeoning rock scene w/ eventual Rock Stars!(at least for a few years). Very interesting for an outsider who grew up during that time and observed from a distance, but loved the music. It feels very authentic, due to the format and personal stories. The book paints a picture of NY for those who have never visited.This book has inspired me to go back and listen to the music I loved at the time(Yeah Yeah Yeahs), along with introducing me to new bands(Interpol) that I missed. That's all you can ask for in a book; along with being very entertaining.JD

Every scene has its rise and fall. This book places a little too much importance on the NYC crew as the saviors of "rock," but the tapestry of voices (even those the average person will never recognize) make this a really enjoyable foray into a corner of rock history. And the amount of reporting this must've taken is impressive and mind boggling!

A fly-on-the-wall view that captures the dive bars, rock clubs, stiff drinks & hard drugs of the Strokes-era scene, told in needle-drop snippets by the wild ones who lived it — Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol, White Stripes, LCD Soundsystem, Fischerspooner, Moldy Peaches, Ryan Adams, TV on the Radio, Jonathan Fire*Eater, Walkman, and, of course, the Strokes — at that turbulent time when 9/11, the internet, and gentrification would change it all.
