The "flight portfolio" in the title of Julie Orringer's new novel, "The Flight Portfolio", is a collection of paintings, drawings, and other artistic endeavors put together by fleeing artists and authors in Marseilles, France in 1940. They had come into what-was-then Vichy, France and were trying to get to Portugal or North Africa. From there they would - hopefully - make their way to freedom in the US, Cuba, Mexico, or, in some cases, Martinique. Most were short of money and hope. Many should have left Europe earlier when the going was somewhat better, but now, as the German noose descended over France, they wanted to leave now. A group was set up - staffed by mostly non-Jewish Americans - who were pulling strings, paying ransoms, bribing officials, and making up counterfeit documents. The group was called the "Emergency Rescue Committee" and one of their most important jobs was deciding who, among the refugees in Marseilles, was worthy of sponsorship and saving by the Committee. Here's where the "flight portfolio" came into existence as artists, many not known in the US, proved their artistic bona fides.The novel is a double story. The first is the story of the rescues of so many people - including Marc Chagall and Max Ernst - and the way the ERC operated in and around Marseilles. Included in that story is how the Committee was able to smuggle people in - and out - of France, headed to safer places from which to get a boat or a plane to the US. As Orringer uses real people as both rescuers and the rescued - its easy to look up these people in Wikipedia. (I'd really advise having access to Wiki as you read the book.). The second story is the love affair between the married Varian Fry - the real journalist who was put in charge of the ERC - and his old college lover, Elliott Grant. Grant is a fictional character but Orringer bases him on Fry's real lover - Lincoln Kirstein. (Fry must have been bi-sexual, because he fathered two children with his second wife.)Julie Orringer's writing is almost perfect as she juggles the comings-and-goings and the personal stories of the main characters. She showed her chops in her first book, "The Invisible Bridge", set in Hungary. Orringer's book is one of those strange mixtures of history and fiction that often don't turn out well, but in Orringer's case, she manages to pull off the combination quite well. The book could have been a hundred or so pages shorter, but I'm not deducting a star for that. It's a winner.

I have played baseball for about 17-18 years of my life (am 24). I have played college at NCAA Division II level and this was like a textbook for me. You don't have to read it like a normal book, just pick a chapter that interests you (or you need work on) and get to reading.I picked the chapters that I felt I needed the most work on and found out ideas as to how to solve the issues I am having, or at least know how to minimize their impact on my game.This should be on shelves of any pitchers that plan to play beyond HS.

In the Jim Bouton baseball classic "Ball Four", Mr. Bouton said something like: "After ten years in this game, I'm just now starting to realize that ninety percent of baseball is psychological". While no book may be able to prove that Jim's statement is true, this book will at the very least show you the importance of understanding the mental game within the dusty diamond. While much of the explorations take place on the mound, the lessons found in this excellent book are also applicable to all of baseball and, perhaps even more importantly, to life in general. I highly recommend this book for musicians and writers as well. As a musician and writer myself, I was able to apply many of the topics discussed in this book to my creative work and performances. It is well written and succinct on the subjects it discusses; not a lot of filler here. It's like reading a conversation with that life mentor you always wanted, but a mentor who is a bit pressed for time, so they cut out the lengthy anecdotes and fluff and get down to nitty-gritty of what they really want to teach you. A baseball book with few equals, and a stunning glance into the mind of a strategic and competitive genius, after reading this alphabetized guide of baseball knowledge you'll feel much more prepared when you step up to the plate, whether that's at home, at work, or at play. And who knows, with the help of H.A. Dorfman you might even throw a perfect game or knock one right out of the park. And at least this time you might have a better understanding of why and how you did it when you watch the ball fly over the fence and take a victory lap around the bases. Buy it. This is the no-hitter of books.

My son got the Mental Side of Pitching and asked for more by this author. As a 13-yr old pitcher and 1st/3rd baseman his mental game was getting the best of him. He is actually reading this book! A 13-yr old reading a book willingly and independently! And it’s working. I highly recommend for players and parents!

This book is awesome. A must have for the young or old pitcher. I am 66 and was struggling with my control and other issues. I am a work in progress but getting better everyday. This book breaks it down from A to Z and gives a bullet point at the end of each chapter on what the pitcher should do. This game and especially pitching is so much mental. This book will give you a better understanding of how to work through so many issues and make you a better pitcher and person. Love it!!!!!!!!!

Picked this book up going into the 14u all-star season this summer after seeing a college pitcher reading it during a televised NCAA game. I figured if it was good enough for her, maybe I should check it out and I am glad that I did.The A,B,C format makes it more of a reference book than a cover-to-cover read. So, I skimmed the various chapters, like Finishing Hitters where he reminds the pitcher to Work Ahead, and Stay Ahead and not let up after going up 0-2 on a batter or trying too hard to throw a perfect pitch. I reviewed several of these concepts with my daughter at home and got to use them in our first tournament this weekend. My daughter came in to relieve a struggling starter and I would periodically call out some of these reminders for different situations, "Attack the Zone", "Work Ahead, Stay Ahead", etc...The game was tied when she came in and she was able to shutout the other team the remaining 4 innings with 6 strikeouts and we end up winning. (actually took 2nd place in the tourney) I really think this book was helpful in keeping her head in the right place. I recommend it.

The Mental ABC's of Pitching is a great book that should be read by all pitchers. It is full of good advice and tips. Being a pitcher myself, it has really helped me perform and pitch better than before. It covers every letter of the alphabet, each letter having at least one word. Stories about former pitchers are common. Overall it is a great book.

I bought this book as a gift for my brother. He found that he was able to be in the moment and not get rattled as much during games. This book helped him take control of his nerves!

Since we loved their book for Paris so much, we decided to go with this for Banff, too. It's perfectly organized and easy to make some plans! My husband wants to follow their suggested rout for a week. We're hikers and we liked how they introduced several hiking trail information/details separately with trail length, elevations, and time. We're super excited to visit Banff this summer.

Bought this for our road trip through the Canadien Rockies. Book gave us good ideas but I don't like the way it's categorized. I found it hard to find what I was looking for. Usually like Frommer's but this book wasn't my favorite format.

If you're going to Banff- GET THIS BOOK! Its small enough to cart around with you and has a wealth of information. Not only does it list suggestions (which I had already found on the internet) but I loved that it gave distances between attractions making it a valuable planning tool! I'm glad we bought this before our trip so we can maximize our time!

Lots of pictures and detailed itineraries of what to do in certain amounts of days on your trip to the Rockies. It will be very helpful on our trip there.

I like the size of the book -- it can be easily slipped into your purse. Very detailed information of Banff and surroundings, I feel as if I have already gone there just by reading through it.

Perfect size for travel. Content was excellent.

Travelling to Banff and Jasper next year; so this guide is providing great information for places to stay and what to see and do.

Frommer's are always favorite travel guides with a lot of information crammed in a handy small size. It is a "go to" book that recommends activities, good restaurants and decent hotels. A useful map is included in a plastic pocket on the inside back cover.

About the Author

Elena Delle Donne has been a professional women’s basketball player since 2013, when she was selected by the Chicago Sky second overall in the WNBA draft. She was the 2015 WNBA MVP and won the gold medal with the USA’s women’s basketball team in the 2016 Olympics. She is the global ambassador for the Special Olympics and became the first national ambassador for the Lyme Research Alliance. Elena also plays host to De11e Donne Academy, a basketball camp that runs throughout the year, where she mentors and coaches girls ages seven to eighteen. She now plays for the Washington, DC, Mystics.

Elena's story is relatable for any woman who has played sports... of course, few have ever played at the level she is capable of. It is an especially good book for parents who have girls struggling because they are "different"! Is she the tallest child in her class (including boys)? Girls struggle with these things, and any one of them could use a story like Elena's... how to deal with "difference", overcome it and rise to the top!I remember reading about Elena in an article in Sports Illustrated when she was a high school senior... It was, of course, about UCONN recruiting her. I had forgotten until my "daughter", who had recently bought a home in DE, heard on morning radio that a Philly station was going to televise a DE WBB game that night. We watched with mouths agape... what a sweet jump shot. We went to many games her junior year, tho I had to drive quite a ways. We realized we'd need season tickets her senior year if we were going to see a game. What a great time... and the NCAA regional in DE was incredible.Elena's basketball is AMAZING, BUT... from interactions with her, she is a genuinely nice person. She always makes a point to interact with the young girls, and boys, who want her autograph or a picture with her.If you have a teen/tween who is struggling with "difference" I highly recommend this book for them.I'm in my 70"s and enjoyed it too!!

Great book. I am an Elena Delle Donne fan, to let you know in case you sense some bias. What follows was going to be my concluding statement, but I think it captures the essence of the book, so I am going to state it here. Throughout the book, Elena's work ethic and determination to improve her game is evident. Near the end, she says Kobe Bryant told her she should have a power phrase, a motivating phrase. She considers "seek perfection", as a mantra. I am thinking, "no, no, no", the desire for perfection has sometimes taken you off course. This book, your story, is about the ups and downs of life, about your humanity. The value of the book is that you shared experiences that others can relate to, that would make you someone people would want to know. After reading the book, they would want to know the person, not the mega superstar. Relief, she tones it down a bit, just a bit :) with "demand excellence", knowing that everything will not be flawless.Here's more about the book. I was most interested in her exit from Connecticut and what was going through her mind. She amply shares that with us. Good reading, but no shocking revelation, as it makes sense to me that anyone, much less an 18-yr old, who is questioning their interest in the game, should certainly do so before committing to the 4-year demands of a Geno Auriemma coached team. (this is no knock on a guy, who is a proven winner).Chapters include the following events: early years in basketball (quite a bit on that, early family relationships (a major aspect of her life); high school basketball; the post-high school burnout phase; Lyme disease bouts (and not knowing what is wrong), university volleyball team; entrance into WNBA in Chicago; international and Olympic basketball (not so much of interest to me compared to other things, but you can see how important it was to her and how much enjoyment she got from playing with her superstar peers); more WNBA and her motivation to move to a new team, the Washington Mystics; her romantic relationship and engagement (I thought she shared, just enough, meaning that's about all that I would share about a private relationship, although I imagine some may want to learn more). It's all there. Not heart-rendering, but a good job sharing. I think it's her that comes through in the book.

Bought this for my 11 year old daughter to read for school.Buyer beware that the story tells about Maria being gay and asking her best friend to marry her and also talks about a friends suicide. My daughter didn’t like this.There are no references to these topics in the about section or info on the book.My Daughter decided not to finish the book.

A well written story about a beautiful and complicated life. If you have lived in Delaware over the past 20 years you couldn’t help but notice Elena Delle Donne even if you were not a basketball fan. She was a legend before leaving grade school. I tried several times to see her play only to be one of the hundreds turned away from packed gyms on cold winter nights. But the best part of this story is the battle to overcome both the plague of Lyme’s disease and the complications that her talents presented her with. The love and connection with her severely disabled sister Lizzie and the role of her supportive family stands out even above the scoring records, MVP status and Olympic Gold Medal.

Excellent story...after reading it myself I sent it to my daughter in law (who was captain of her college basketball team) and couches girls basketball now. Her 13 year old daughter grabbed it and read it first! And, yes, her daughter plays on two basketball teams. Recommendations from all three of us.

Just love it. She is a pure excellent woman, all around!

In the Author’s Note Craig Symonds says, “The Second World War was the single greatest cataclysm of violence in human history.” To fight that war the United States constructed the largest, most technologically advanced navy ever seen to that point in history. This book in part tells that story but the book is not just about America’s war at sea. The US also constructed the largest fleet of merchant shipping ever seen to support her allies and her own military in that terrible conflict. This book tells that story but it also addresses the Herculean ordeal of transporting critically needed supplies across thousands of miles of ocean to keep Britain, the Soviets, the Australians and New Zealanders, and China in the war. This book is also about the larger conflict. It attempts to examine all the important naval encounters of all the important belligerents and it succeeds.Professor Symonds organizes the narrative chronologically, dovetailing the events that took place at the same time but separated by great distances. Most authors cover the war geographically, telling the story of war in the Atlantic separately from the war in the Pacific. That is done for organizational convenience and because most authors focus on the United States. Craig Symonds covers all the navies of the major belligerents with a descriptive command that clearly illustrates the historical flow to the reader. Several episodes of the war not usually covered appear here. The Norwegian Campaign and the naval confrontations in the Mediterranean are typically not well covered but the author corrects that in this book. I found the story of the attempts to relieve the garrison on Malta gripping; I had never heard of Operation Pedestal before. Another important event covered by the author that is usually missed by others: the monumental importance of Congressman Carl Vinson and the Two Ocean Navy Act he pushed through the House.The author not only emphasizes the importance of merchant shipping to the war effort but focuses the reader on the significance of the amphibious ships and craft necessary to deliver the Allies to the beaches. In this discussion Symonds gets a chance to examine the competition for resources that resulted from attempting to quickly build not only the huge numbers of so many different types of vessels but also build airplanes, tanks, jeeps, trucks and artillery as well. This competition meant that one type of ship, the Landing Ship Tank, would be the limiting factor. The LST could not be replaced by any other vessel and Eisenhower very nearly did not have enough for the invasion of Northern Europe. The Allies had planned an invasion of Southern France, Operation Anvil, to be simultaneously launched with Overlord. The LST requirements for Anvil would limit the sealift for Overlord. Professor Symonds explains Eisenhower’s dilemma, “…while there would be enough LSTs for the first three tides, after that ‘we will have no repeat no LSTs reaching the beaches after the morning of D plus 1 until the morning of D plus 4.” (p 508) That is a long time to go without reinforcement or resupply. That is how critical the LST was. It did not help matters that the invasion of Saipan in the Pacific was planned to take place at nearly the same time as Overlord. The war in the Pacific accounted for the dearth of LSTs in Europe and the Mediterranean. The US did produce an overwhelming amount of war material. He has won many awards to include the Samuel Eliot Morison Award for Naval Literature for his book Neptune: The Allied Invasion of Europe and the D-Day Landings. So, besides being a gifted author Professor Symonds is also a highly respected naval historian. I first discovered him through his book on the Battle of Midway and when Neptune came out I had to get it. Both are just fabulous examples of how to tell an engaging story, explain technological details while maintaining the reader’s interest and pass on the history of that time and place, and of the people involved, in a way that flows like a novel. Since Neptune was published I have been keeping an eye out for his next work. When I saw the topic of his new effort I was stunned. Yes, that is what I want. I want a single volume history of World War II at sea and I want it written by Craig Symonds! I am completely satisfied with the result.

Craig Symonds has written a tremendous one-volume account of the global war at sea in World War II.Beginning with the daring attack on Scapa Flow by a German U-Boat and concluding with the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay, this fine book covers every major naval encounter of the war. Included are the battles of the river Plate, the U-Boat menace in the Atlantic, Pearl Harbor, Midway, North Africa, Guadalcanal, the battles in the Mediterranean, the sinking of the Bismarck, the campaigns in the central Pacific, and Okinawa, among others. The book also contains dozens of photographs and maps.The personalities of the war at sea are also covered. Such leaders as Nimitz, Halsey, Spruance, King, Yamamoto, Nagumo, Raeder, and Donitz and the tactics they used are brought to life. Not to be forgotten are the brave men who manned the ships and fought so hard. These men risked their lives in battle so that themselves and their comrades might be able to go home again.Very seldom does a single volume do such an accurate job of describing the war at sea. Symond's book does just that. Each major battle is discussed, and he does a fine job of including all of the action that took place as well. I highly recommend this fine book. It is a good read for the naval expert or the casual reader.

I was born a year after the Hiroshima bomb was dropped. I remember the parades of the early 1950s, but never really understood the scope of world war II. What I liked about "World War II at Sea" was the seamless integration and description of a series of complex events that occurred across an entire world. Although I have read a number of books about individual battles, the masterful integration of time, geography and the scope of the battles in this book provides a truly remarkable summary of the sweep of naval engagements during the war. I learned so much. I did not know there was a short period when there were no operational American carriers in the Pacific Ocean. I never understood the impact of the split command (MacArthur and Nimitz) on the conduct of the war in the South Pacific. On top of this it was almost a "page turner". Once I engaged, I did not want to put it down. Kudos to Mr. Symonds for a well-crafted book.

This book represents a phenomenal undertaking and accomplishes it with remarkable success. Beyond the author’s brilliant prose, his historical expertise is on full display as he takes the reader from the post-WWI naval treaties through the Japanese surrender on the deck of the USS Missouri in 1945. I've listen to Steve Green for over 25 years now and I love his music because it is so good and the words always reflect Christ and His message from the Bible. Steve in every area of his life and especially in his music is the instrument that God uses and takes himself out of the picture and lets the talents God gave him be used for God's glory and praise. Steve Green's music encourages, strengthens, teaches, inspires and leads you to the foot of Christ regardless if you are going through a hard time or a good time in your life. I love these songs on this CD and his new stuff Somewhere Between and Songs of Worship are just incredibly awesome!The CD is awesome and this book is a great way to bring to life some songs I believe will end up in the hymn book of our churches to your church choir and special music programs. Songs like Find Us Faithful, People Need The Lord, God and God Alone, The Mission, Household of Faith, and on and on I could go, strong, deeply rooted songs that can bring greater depth to your worship services.

About the Author

At an early age Shannon Kilkenny began what would become her career in event planning by gathering her neighborhood friends on a regular basis. Throughout high school and college she volunteered for committees and headed organizations allowing her to bring people together for a variety of reasons. Concurrently, she began a writing career with newsletters, articles, copy for marketing material, and later writing and editing guidebooks, user manuals, and how to books. These two careers continue in concert for more than 25 years. Her expertise and good humor created successful business relationships with clients in the banking industry, hospitality trade, educational and non-profit organizations, professional associations, athletic clubs and the environmental community. Having participated with these diverse groups, Ms. Kilkenny is familiar with multiple segments of the business and social world. With the writing and event planning skills strongly embedded and using her multilayered experiences, the book, Successful Event Planning, was born. She is currently teaching event planning classes, workshops and seminars, and doing public speaking. She developed a curriculum for all levels of commitment. She has mentored beginners through their first event and assisted seasoned professionals seeking new heights of proficiency. Her latest endeavor for event planning is to help the industry create new Environmental Standards. She is in the process of writing her next book dedicated to greening the hospitality and event planning business. In her leisure time you will find her in her garden, in her kayak, or in the clutches of a good book. Ms. Kilkenny lives by the ocean North of San Francisco.

This book had good reviews, which is why I bought it. It has the same problem a lot of self help books do. It spends a lot of time talking about how useful the book is, without telling you information to prove it. Lots of nearly meaningless lists that can be over a page long. And I'm not talking check lists. It is like Bubba listing every sort of shrimp food item.Otherwise it is fine in a general way, but lacks on hard specifics. Someone asked me what the secret is to Successful Event Planning, (As the title says) and I could only respond, "The plan itself". I really couldn't pin point anything from the book that was particularly special.

I had just started reading it but I can already see the usefulness of this book. unfortunately I have the Kindle version and it did not come with a companion CD. Is there any way to access the files or download them from somewhere so I will have them?

I don't know how this woman calls herself an event planner when she obviously hasn't ever written for public relations. Her writing is poor, repetitive, and hard to understand. I'm sure there are good skills for event planning throughout, but I couldn't get past chapter 3 due to the horrid grammar.

Brillant book I am so delighted with it. There is lots of helpful guidance that has helped me yo shape my business.
