Pleasant enough summer beach book - but the author needs a better editor. The book teems with anachronisms! I rather doubt that Posie Parker bought a "half-kilo" of chocolates; in 1922 Britain, pounds and ounces were used. The stone in her engagement ring is described as the size of a penny! In 1922 the UK penny was enormous (similar in size to a US half-dollar), not at all like the current penny, which is more the size of the old farthing.I doubt that in 1922, a well-educated middle-class English person would have used phrases like "thanks for the lunch invite" or "how come...". There are many other examples of period-inappropriate language.

I'll admit that this series was entertaining enough for me to enjoy reading the first four volumes, in order, but one thing is consistent throughout the series: Hathaway needs a good copy editor/researcher to weed out gross anachronisms. The series takes place in the early 1920s, but the author uses many terms and descriptions that would have required a time machine. A few examples follow. In a couple of the books, characters say they are "gobsmacked," a term which according to the Oxford English Dictionary originated in the 1980s. In one, Posie refers to herself as "an airhead." OMG LOL gag me!! In another, someone is said to be arriving in an Avro jet trainer, which had it existed in 1920 would have certainly changed the course of the next world war. In this one, bomb sites from the Zeppelin raids are described as being hidden behind "chipboard," which hadn't been invented yet, although plywood had. In a previous one, Posie buys a "trouser suit" in a women's clothing store, which in 1920 would have been highly unlikely, as women wore trousers as sportswear or loungewear only, not streetwear. Even things like manners -- a person who invites her to a manor house weekend calls back to recommend that she bring something dressy. No one would have dared go to a manor house weekend without being prepared to dress for dinner, and Posey, with her aristocratic friends, would have known that. Other reviewers have pointed out other, similar issues. Now, the plots are entertaining, although at times they do seem heavily inspired by the original mysteries of the golden era -- sinister secret nightclubs and blizzard-stranded house parties come to mind -- but I find myself reading almost as much to spot the next blooper as to spot the next clue. If you are reading on Kindle, you'll want to keep your iPad or laptop handy so you can Google them (as Kindle functionality is limited in that regard).

This is my 4th Posie Parker (a feisty private detective in the 1920’s). L.B. Hathaway has very readable books that are easy to get through in a few hours.Posie is a consistently developed character. The premise is fantastic – this one about a doctor presumed dead in the war who is later spotted in Oxford. Having the person who hires Posie turn out to be someone she hated and who also hated her was an excellent twist.I enjoyed the puzzle and the clues, although I was surprised to hear for the first time that Posie has a brother who was never mentioned in the previous 3 books. The plot line of the missing doctor happened to help her connect with her dead brother. The romantic angle is promising, I don’t know how it continues to grow despite the fact that we almost never see Posie and Alaric together. In the brief glimpses he maintains his allure – gorgeous, good-hearted and always somewhere else.I was also very surprised by the addition of a real ghost, but it fit into the motif of the book (ghosts of the war).

This is the fourth Posie Parker book. After breaking up with Len in the second book, and being alone in the office for the part of the third when she was in London, Len is back as a partner in their detective agency, though now he’s married and has a baby he’s devoted to. They also have a full-time secretary-receptionist named Prudence, who’s something of a piece of work but useful enough to be worth her pay. Posie is called in by an old acquaintance, though they’d been more enemies than friends when they worked together in a medical group during the Great War. Felicity Fyne had been the senior nurse for the group, and Posie had been an ambulance driver. Both had been lucky enough to be away from the medical tent when a German heavy shell hit it squarely and killed everyone else in the group. But Felicity had been at Cambridge for the funeral of Dr. Rolly, who had also been part of the group but had been assigned elsewhere before the disaster, and was sure she’d seen Dr. Winter, whom she’d been married to a couple of months before the disaster. And he was supposed to have been killed, although admittedly there weren’t enough remains left to be sure all the bodies had been properly identified. (Guess everyone didn’t wear dog-tags then the way they did in Hitler’s War. At least, US soldiers did.) So anyhow, Felicity wants Posie to see if she can find out whether she’d seen a ghost or if Dr. Winter had survived. And so begins a very complicated tale. I enjoy this series; it’s not great, but the prose is decent, the plots are complex, and I like the character of Posie.
