About the Author
Dr. Miriam Bat-Ami, Western Michigan University professor emeritus, has lived in Mattawan for the last 23 years-where she and her husband raised two children, dogs, cats, chickens and an assortment of small furry creatures. She has four published books and has written creative nonfiction, fiction and poetry. When she is not writing or gardening, she acts in local theaters and loves making people laugh. Best of all, she plays with her new and first grandbaby girl, Maya. At times the road may seem empty but it teems with life. One nest is abandoned; another is built.

This is a book of lovely poems. I could feel the author's passion, disappointments, and joys as though they were my own. Dr. Bat-Ami's writing is pure and heartfelt; she is a skilled and expressive author. The poems were like short stories, vignettes giving glimpses into a life of a mother, academic, sister, sportswoman, and environmentalist who observes the nuances around her that most others would overlook. As an avid gardener and mother of sons, I found the contents to be relatable and relevant. Many touched my soul and gave a voice to my own feelings. This is a book that I will read and read again many times. My personal favorite: The Smell of Them. Read it and see what you think.
A moving exploration of the beauty and poignancy of everyday experience, from the growth and departure of children to the other people and landscapes that make a full and three dimensional life. The poetess observes the world deeply and profoundly and describes it with brilliance and precision. Highly recommended.
Wow. Having grown up in the Midwest and moved away more than a decade ago, this book really brought me back to my childhood. Strongly recommended.
