For anyone into cooking, this is a piece of history, for any Italian or Italian American, this is is a piece of your culture. The recipes might be 50/50 if they are relative today (though it does tell the difference between what Americans call Pomodoro and Marinara). And it does offer a lot of culinary knowledge, correcting a lot of myths about Italian cuisine we Americans have perpetuated over the years.

This is a fantastic book, not just for the recipes, but also for Artusi's interesting and humourous asides. It contains a selection of recipes ranging from complex to very simple, yet elegant. IMHO it is far more than "marginal" as a cookbook. Because it is non-specific about quantities, Artusi seemed to assume that the audience reading this book knows what is what. Quantities are always adjustable according to individual taste, and that is the nature of real cooking. So in that sense, it is not a connect-the-dots cookbook, but a very good way to experiment with different variations of flavour.He obviously recognized that his readers already knew how to cook. This is a book to give the reader various ideas about recipes and menus. Beginners beware, it will not tell how many teaspoons of something to put into your sauces. We're supposed to know how much is too much or too little.It's a great book, and very unique among a plethora of same old-same-old cookbooks.

I Love this book , the best recipes from 1891 old world Italy , I recommend this book for any Italian that loves old fashion Italian cooking .I have learned so much from cooking these delights, my family loves the dishes from this traditional cook book and I am a hit with them ,I have not told them about this book yet But I am giving each family member a copy of the book and will become a family hand me downs.this is good old fashion cooking and should not be attempted unless you take the time to make them properly.The secret to fine cooking is patience , measurements of ingredient time and temperature . there are no shortcuts for great cooking .

Italian food is the food of passion and love. Italians in the province of Emilia-Romagna, are your quintessential food critics. Men will not eat it unless it's good all the way around. Shoddy or bad food offends them and they take it personally as a slight to their bodies. They can be extremely articulate about it too. Artusi was born and grew up in Romagna. I can imagine that as a male he wanted all women there to learn how to cook well, in his own interest too. I have tried many recipes in his book and the dishes came out pretty tasty. He seemed to worry a lot about his digestion and stomach, it's understandable, in his day there were no wonder drugs or antibiotics and people died young. So "Let food be your medicine" was even more relevant in his day. As for his measurements, a pinch here and a pinch there of this and that, makes you more of an artist than rigid figures and it becomes your creation. His recipes are easy and there are no Chocolate Souffles to destroy, if you open the oven door too soon. This book will be around our families for many generations to come.

`Science in the Kitchen and The Art of Eating Well' by Bologna native, Pellegrino Artusi, recently republished in English with a new introduction by American food writer, Michelle Scicolone is a work originally written in Italian and published by the author almost 115 years ago. I was drawn to it by a very positive reference to it in Paul Bertolli's cookbook, `Chez Panisse Cooking'.If it were not for this recommendation, I may have been inclined to dismiss the book as irrelevant to today's cooks, given the wealth of Italian cookbooks from Marcella Hazan, Lydia Bastianich, Michelle Scicolone herself, and a dozen of scribblers on the cooking from the various regions (Tuscany, Lazio, Campania, Sicily, etc.) and `superregions' (north versus south) of Italy. So, here I am to say that there is much of value here for the foodie and the professional cook. For all you casual cookbook clients out there, you may want to give this one a pass. In spite of its title, it has absolutely nothing in common with the kind of kitchen science written by Harold McGee, Shirley Corriher, and Alton Brown.This is not to say that there is no deep thinking about food in this book. The paperback has over 650 pages filled with 790 recipes plus an English and an Italian index. And, in all that space, there are hundreds of little observations about the right way to cook dishes. The problem for the amateur is that almost all the recipes assume you already know a lot about cooking, so lots of little details are left off. One of my favorite examples is in the recipe for veal saltimbocca (Veal cutlets, Roman Style). Artusi gives scant details on the size of the cutlet except that they should be a half a finger thick. He also gives no details about the sautee time except to say that the side with the procuitto should not be cooked for too long, lest it become too tough. On the other hand, the author takes the time to say that the veal should not be prepared with a whole sage leaf, as this would be too much. One wonders how large his sage leaves are, as I have made this dish several times and used a full sage leaf with no ill effects. To the good, I welcome the warning about not sauteeing too long. I just finished making a veal Marsala which turned out poorly, as the meat was too thin for my cooking time. Live and learn.Probably the biggest disadvantage for typical American amateur cooks is that most measurements are made by weight. The fact that they are translated from metric into Imperial units does little good, as most kitchens are simply not equipped to weigh an ounce of butter or 2/3 of an ounce of grated Parmesan cheese. Thus, unless you use the book to provide supplementary insights to recipes from Mario Batali, I would place the book by your favorite reading chair rather than on the kitchen shelf between `The Joy of Cooking' and `Mastering the Art of French Cooking'.As an historical document, this is really a great read. It was first published just after the unification of Italy and, while the book has many references to the geographical sources of these recipes, it does address the cuisine of Italy as a whole, at a time before Escoffier, when claims to dominance in the cuisine of Western Europe between Italy and France was a pretty lively issue. In fact, the author was criticized for being too French and by reflecting the practices of the French professionals working for the nobility rather than the practices of mother and grandma in the kitchens of Sienna or Leghorn. The most pervasive evidence of this French influence is that almost all sauces are strained before serving. I think Mario Batali would rather sell his firstborn before he strains an Italian sauce. But there it is. Artusi gives us professional Italian culinary practice among the nobility and restaurante chefs of 1890.While the value of this book is unmatched, I give it only four stars to warn anyone to read the review carefully before buying this book with mistaken expectations.If you are a died in the wool foodie, food professional, or cookbook collector, you must have this book. In addition to the recipes, there are dozens of stories, the kind which foodie readers really appreciate. For all others, consider a more modern encyclopedia of Italian recipes such as Michelle Scicolone's own `1000 Italian Recipes'.

This is one of the maternal Italian cookbooks in a very impressive lineage. This puts perspective on modern Italian cooking that you see in books like the Silver Spoon. This is more of a read than a cookbook, dont expect amounts or details, this is the cooking your mother does, so this is only for advanced cooks who are daring, and devil may care, be prpared to do alot of testing and know what goes with what, if you are starting out pick a different book, like the Silver Spoon, thats easy peasy.

This cookbook is very basic, very simple, as great cooking should be. Funny to read at times as well.

This is a good summary of the Catholic faith. It is well-written and for the most part interesting. (I've never read any book of this type which is not a bit "dry" at times.)A Map of Life was written in 1933. That is nearly 85 years ago. Times change, however, so a summary of the faith now almost 85 years old is appealing to different readers/mentalities than when the book did when it was first published. And we have so many more current resources available now in many formats on many platforms. Included in this is the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the numerous works which flow from that. We have Catholic apologetics in print, on line, and in many formats.As I read this book, I was thinking that if it had been handed to me to read years ago when I was starting my journey in faith, I most likely wouldn't have gotten very far into the book. I have found I need someone to accompany me on the journey, and I suspect that there are many like me with that need. When I was first "evangelized" at the age of 24 while a teacher at a Catholic school, the person who had shared the Gospel with me was part of a lay community of Catholics with lots of people my age who invited me to activities and fellowship that kept me interested. Over the years, I have found that this interaction with others is often crucial for a person to go from reading something Jesus to following him.Finally, I would say that this book, written when it was, misses out on the idea of a person "encountering Christ" in its many dimensions--personally through the Eucharist, through communal activities (community), through serving and caring for others. All of these ways we encounter Christ help support us on our journey. Faith is more than a head thing; it also involves a relationship with Jesus and engagement with others on the journey. In our time of extreme individualism, this opening of ourselves to others may be a challenge to many.I write all these things because I feel that while the book is a helpful tool, but it is not a stand alone and will likely need to be supplemented by other tools, not the least of which is ourselves as an interested and supporting friend to those on or about the begin the journey.

The book is great, recommend it wholeheartedly. However, the 99 cent edition is only part of the book. It is like in the old days, if you buy a map and then open it to see half torn off. The summary is same for full and part version and says nothing about being part of the book, very confusing. Hit "see all versions" under cover to get full book, it has a different cover, no clouds on cover.

People have been commenting for FOUR YEARS that this book has only the first 4 chapters, but Amazon won't fix it.I have looked, and do not find where I can complain about this.I have tried to return this digital product so that I could explain WHY it is deficient, but apparently you cannot return downloaded products.Frustrating.

This is by far the most difficult to read book on the Catholic faith I have ever picked up. It's like it's written for theologians and not for regular Catholics. His writing style reminds me of William Faulkner, run-on sentences that seem to never end. I read and reread paragraphs and come up with completely frustrated and confused.

First of all I would like to admit that I have hardly heard the name of Frank Sheed. My bias when I choose Catholic books is for the authors who are either priests, Saints or well-known theologians of current generation. But this Book has surprised me in more than one ways.The greatest plus point of these book is that is is easily "digestible" and is not "preachy". Considering the knowledge of today's man, the author has written this book. It tells about the belief of the Catholic Church very succinctly.My only regret is that I didnt read this book early on.

This is an excellent book by Frank Sheed. My complaint is not with the book but with this kindle edition. I have the paperback and purchased this kindle edition so that I could read in bed. Only the first four chapters plus chapter 11 (The Supernatural Life) are included in this version. There are 14 chapters in the original book. Disappointed.

Frank Sheed's book (A Map of Life) answers the big questions:Why are we here?Where are we going?How do we get there?in an easy-to-grasp small book.It's not a fast read because it forces one to think...hard and meditate on some deep concepts; but it flows beautifully. The beginning of each chapter includes a brief summary of those before it...to keep one up to speed, so to speak.I cannot recommend it highly enough, and would like to order a million copies and just hand them out on a street corner.

This is the one book to start with if you want to deepen your understanding of the Faith, or if you are not a Catholic and you want to know what it's all about.

Some armchair travel books draw you in immediately. You feel as if you are accompanying the author, savoring every page. This book didn't.I almost didn't make it through the preface and first chapter of the book. It wasn't quite clear as to why the author and her husband resigned their positions for 'time and freedom.' The journeys in the book were accomplished over a time period of several years, not just in one year as the title would suggest. Perhaps the time was needed to write this book with a lot of superlatives. A random selection of one page includes a 'grandiose exit,' smeared sky, 'gold orb,' and 'miraculous places' in just one paragraph. I don't doubt that the author is a passionate traveller but I'm not sure that she is any more so than most, if not all, of her readers.We enjoy stretching out our travel pleasure by reading good books about our favorite places. For us that is England and I really enjoyed the chapters on England and Scotland including the author's interest in gardens and gardening. I wished those two chapters were much longer. And, maybe that is part of the reason I was unable to sustain an interest in the book. Since so many areas are covered, there isn't as much information as we'd like on any one of the individual journeys.For me, A Year in the World is pleasant but not compelling reading.

I enjoyed Under The Tuscan Sun more- STill recommeneded.Perhaps becauseit was set in one locale. In this true novel, Frances and husband travel across Europe to places they always wanted to visit. I enjoyed the history and the references to literary figures ( and cultural as well) as I was a teacher many years. Not quite a good beach book but a good book to read a litle of every night.

This book disappointed me because I expected to find the quality of writing in A Year in Tuscany. Instead, A Year in the World rambled along interminably. Where was the editor of this overwritten book? Too much erudite history and too many long attempts at poetic description make getting to the end a long slog. Also, I would have liked some description of husband Ed. Occasional, brief, stilted conversations between Frances and Ed revealed next to nothing about Ed's personality, background, thoughts or appearance. Finally, I can't help wondering how much Frances and Ed weigh? A great deal of the book is about food, and the many snacks and meals they enjoyed each day. A photo of the two would satisfy this reader's curiosity. I liked A Year in Tuscany, but A Year in the World is about six months too long.

Under a Tuscan Sun drew me to Frances Mayes and I have all her books, but this one, after I bought the book I needed to buy the audio to understand the pronunciation which I wish she had done (phonetically) after a foreign word to be able to pronounce it. Still great to be on their trip and experiences. Pat Smith

Love this book, I did enjoy, every place, every food, every experience through Frances's writing.

This is not your typical Frances Mayes book. There are even long stretches quoting other authors that I more or less leafed through. Still, it was wonderful to savor, through her eyes, places which I will never see. I so enjoy the rich mental images she evokes with her poetic use of the language. Sometimes I think I'm getting impatient when she goes off into details of authors and artists from the regions they visit. But I am finding it valuable; where else would I have heard of her French writer "muse" Colette? You don't expect philosophical musings in a book about travel? I didn't either, but I like the way her mind works and how it binds all the scenes together.This book may not be as dense with the qualities that make me read her work so slowly, savoring every phrase, but there is a feast here to enjoy.Every time I read one of her books I find myself thinking she could be a friend if life had so led. Then I quickly remember that probably everyone feels the same way. lol

The foodie aspect is interesting, but the way they travel is too slow for my taste, and I would like to hear about visits to the castles that she abhors, not the gardens that she loves.

Just love knowing this book is in m'home!!!! Both Hubby and I enjoy reading a chapter occasionally...Frances' descriptive writing joyfully relaxing.

Well written and easy to follow. It provides a lot of detailed information about the Pi and how to work with it. It gives specific instructions on how to create a bootable SD card to run the Pi. The book explains how to work with the operating environment and examples of how to program the Pi for you own purposes. There are sections on creating interactive games and how to use the Pi to control LEDs and other items. Well worth the money.

If you're like me, you buy Dummies books not because you literally know nothing, but because of the consistency that the brand enforces. Unfortunately, I feel this book is written for people who have never seen linux before and for some reason still want to buy a raspberry pi to use as a regular computer.To be fair, had I read the cover, I would have known that. But I took it on brand faith that the Dummies book for the Raspberry Pi would be well-rounded. Thus, I am disappointed. Here were some of my "what the heck?" moments:1) A whole chapter on html and websites?2) Two chapters on Python and Pygame?3) Chapters on GIMP and LibreOffice?Ok, so Raspberry Pi is a linux machine. Got it. But none of these are really specific to the Raspberry Pi. You can do all this stuff on a Windows machine. It seemed like filler material to me.The chapters at the end on physical computing were better, but instead of starting you with breadboards and LEDs, they have you doing woodworking to build a physical game.I think there are better books out there for almost every skill level.

I bought this book because I was interested in Raspberry Pi. I am also a dummy. Makes sense.But, see, I'm not as dumb as this book thinks I am.There are exactly 6 of the 18 chapters in this book that pertain to the Raspberry Pi. And these are really, really well done. After reading them I felt comfortable with the hardware and how I should be using it. The remaining 12 chapters (the bulk of the book) run the gamut from a Python programming intro to how to use a Linux word processor.This would be great if it were titled "Computing for Dummies". But it isn't.

I reverse engineer circuits from JTAG ports to check on proprietary algorithms, so am tearing apart electronics all day long. When you look at the skyrocketing Raspberry Pi sales stats, about 70% are from folks looking to "build an inexpensive PC" whereas the other 30 are hobbyists with a few pros thrown in to chain with Propeller and other heavy hitters for more advanced applications. A few of us use them to customize testing tools, but that's another topic for another day, and NOT in this book.This book covers ALL the big questions, especially for those just opening the package. It will save you a LOT of money by:1. Showing you how to get the OS working without having to buy pre-packaged cards, which are themselves only downloads from the free sites anyway2. Not having to buy the 12 other books either out or coming out that show you (with varying quality) piece-by-piece what either the hardware, software, assembly, Linux, OS, or other levels do one by one.I'd recommend this to anyone planning to use this as an inexpensive PC, or planning on more advanced hobby work, because after you get all the pins, access, media vs. primary OS, etc. done you can then move on to more advanced, specialized applications from home automation to games, robotics, and much more.Most of the younger, most advanced programmers on the planet (I work with a LOT of them) don't have a clue about some of the older assembly-level memory tricks, etc. and when you're using an SD card instead of a big drive, the discipline is a great eye opener even for old hacks like me. This beast is nearly 500 pages, compared to a lot of "specialty" Pi books at twice the price and 1/3 the page count, and every page is packed with great stuff for beginning and intermediate users. For reference and review, at this price, I'd also recommend it to seasoned old folks too if you really want to maximize your RP skill quickly, and save money re: above.

Exactly as described, there is info, projects, samples, and it is a good all-round reference. We are quite familiar with using the Raspberry Pi and didn't need an introduction but I got this anyway for the straightforward info as it goes farther than just introducing the unit.

By the time anything on the Raspberry Pi can get in paperback, it's going to be out of date or missing the newest thing. Still, six months after publication, this book is still relevant. I bought it for my 12 year old niece who has expressed an interest in the Pi and this book will cover all of the essentials, from just using the Pi as a computer, to programming it, to building circuits around it.

If you are like me and know nothing about a Raspberry Pi, this book is for you. It takes you from a basic introduction of the hardware and Raspian (Linux) operating system and moves on to setting it up and programming it using Python. While this book won't be your only guide to using the RPi, it's certainly a good place to start. Sean McManus does of a great job of explaining it all in terms we can all understand. I recommend it.

The book was surprisingly informative, interesting to read, and included a good number of recipes to make with and pair with beer. The book is broken down as follows:Enjoying Beer - What craft beer is and how to taste it.The Physics - How beer is made, the fundamental four, and freshness vs age.Craft on Deck - Beer styles, the rise of the IPA, and eight pathways of discoveryDIY Dog - How to home brew, from taking the extract to all grain to no painDog Eat Dog - Pairing beer and food, cooking with (and alongside) craft beerLast Orders - Our Brewdog Spotter's Guide, craft beer glossary, and James and Martin's Favorite bar crawlOverall, very interesting book that's full of information and gorgeous photos. My husband is a beer-drinking and brewing aficionado, and I got this book mainly for him to read and enjoy.At first, he thought it wouldn't have much in the way of new information for him, because his knowledge of the subject is already quite extensive.He soon found that the book was an easy and entertaining read, with some subject matter he did not know, and a lot he did know, but presented in new ways and in an engaging manner.Of course the book takes you through the six steps of brewing your own, from mashing to bottling, in easy-to-understand language.But there is much more content involved:Original brew recipes are included, detailed and clear, of beer recipes from The Brew Dog Brewers of the U.K., who authored this book.(It is not uncommon to find Brew Dog beer stateside.)Also included are many different illustrated recipes for pub fare, some of them including beer in the recipes. Pairings are included.Desserts and their pairings are included as well.Also in the book:How the different types of beer came to exist and how you can achieve the same results using your own recipes.Two of those included are oatmeal stout and dunkel, among other familiar and not so familiar types of beer.At the end of the book you'll find 3 large sections for recording 3 separate and highly detailed beer drinking experiences, including:Weather, time of day, who you were with, bar play list, dogs present, beards present, and many other off-the-wall details to make note of.The pages could be printed to record yet more beer outings-this is going to be FUN!For yet more entertainment, there are two pop-out cardboard coasters and two beer bingo cards.“Craft Beer for the People” is well-illustrated with color photos, sketched diagrams and drawings.The writing is whimsical at times, and includes a lot of anecdotes, yet the information is both thorough and accurate.My husband and I both enjoyed perusing this book. If you have any interest in beer drinking and beer lore, I think you will too.

The subject is craft beer and it is explored in sufficient detail to inform without becoming tediously mired in minutiae. It is a balancing act that the author and collaborators deftly accomplish. For example, I do not plan to brew craft beer but I am sufficiently interested in the process to appreciate the heavily illustrated 20 pages in the book devoted to the task.Or the 20 recipes that cover a cross-section of different dishes ranging from fish to fowl and pasta to pie while pairing a beer with them and/or including the brew in the recipe. Both are excellent chapters with the subject matter satisfyingly explored, but I would not call this book a guide on how to brew craft beer or a cookbook devoted to beer. But in this way, the broad scope of craft beer is exposed and the reader is free to do additional research in specific areas of interest.The book is well-organized into seven basic chapters—Introduction, Enjoying Beer, The Physics (how beer is made), Craft on Deck (beer styles), DIY Dog (how to brew), Dog Eat Dog (recipes) and Last Orders (assorted information). There are also solid sections on Additional Reading and an Index and Glossary.The text is printed with black ink which makes reading easier but font size varies but all too often appears to be tiny 8 point that strains the eyesight of even those people with good vision. This is compounded on some pages because the background can be quite vividly colored – like deep royal blue and dark mauve which makes the text even more difficult to read.This is an all too common issue and I mention it because it can be a deciding factor for anyone with vision limitations. The book itself is written in an engaging way and is solidly informative. The book is created by people who love craft beer and that is clearly communicated throughout. I learned a lot and enjoyed the experience.
