About the Author

Carol Kapaun Ratchenski began writing prose poetry in the 80's after reading Murder in the Dark by Maragret Atwood. The House on the Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros took her breath away. Ratchenski's first novel Mamababy, was published in 2013 as an e-book by Knuckledown Press. After losing her second son to cancer, she decided the best thing to do was to write about it. Ratchenski wants readers to see all the ways that life is horrible and wonderful all at the same time and how that can create something beautiful. She loved the idea of interconnecting poetry and prose together to create something similar to novel length.

Carol Ratchenski’s collection of poems is a quick but powerful read. “A Beautiful Hell” is hard hitting, honest, and heartfelt as it immediately strikes you with a mother reflecting on the death of her two-year-old child from cancer. The book takes time on the event itself, but also the effects of it in every aspect of life, like how it changes the way you look at the world. It is truly about ultimate loss and the innately human capacity to move on from unthinkable tragedy. The author’s prose poems perfectly convey the feeling of franticness, desolation, and need to continue living despite it all. Often while reading, I would have to stop to just look at cute cat videos and remember that the sun can indeed shine. Despite this, I was still compelled to keep coming back to the roller coaster of emotions within. You can feel the author’s hand in sentence, punching you in the gut but then making you reel with laughter from a cleverly written line; “I’ll be in the bathroom praying or in the chapel throwing up.” The final poem brings the book to a peaceful end, giving the feeling of both the author and reader being able to move on from the cataclysm they’ve experienced. I would highly recommend “A Beautiful Hell” for all the raw emotions, both good and bad, streaming through the lines on every page.

This collection of poems is from the point of view of a mother who has lost her two year old son to cancer. While a quick read, it captures the reader and doesn’t let go until the very last page. The poems take place throughout multiple years of the mother’s life, expressing the pain and challenges she has faced along this journey. With an overwhelming amount of death and overcoming it in her life, she pushes the reader to question love, life, and what is truly important within it. The collection as a whole connects seamlessly together with almost all the poems based on her relationship and experiences regarding her cancer-ridden son. This collection of poems also gives readers a glimpse into the narrator’s life growing up with her grandmother and their unique relationship. The collection provides peculiar and intriguing interactions with hospital staff the mother encounters along the way, such as the night nurse and Julio the cook. One of the hardest parts to read is the struggle the narrator goes through while dealing with the heartbreaking challenge of moving from one son to two, then back to one as her other dies from cancer. While this collection of poems is slightly difficult to follow at certain points, it is incredibly effective in its ability to connect to the narrator’s pain and travel through the different stages of her life.

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. I know I borrowed that line and I’m not sure if it is two sentences or a run on. Still, it’s perfect. And I worry about this more than anything. That this one defining thing you won’t believe. It was the best year of my life. That most clear, shiny time of all. If this is the land and the time of choices, then the joy came to me when all my options disappeared.” In one of her longer prose poems entitled, “A Tale,” Carol Kapaun Ratchenski perfectly sums up the ambivalent emotions of a mother enduring the unthinkable. A Beautiful Hell is an all too real account of the tragedies and beauties of a life faced with the big C. Cancer. Ratchenski’s words are powerful. Her heartbreaking prose poems, and free verse laced with hope will have you in tears from the start, and leave you feeling emotionally exhausted, but hopeful by the end. The prose and occasional shorter free verse poems that makeup A Beautiful Hell flow together effortlessly, creating the sense that you are reading a poetic narrative. The contrasting themes of perpetual despair, and perspective peace are easily relatable for anyone who has watched someone dear to them suffer through something as painful as Cancer. Ratchenski does not shy away from the terrible truths, and she does not apologize for giving voice to the unbelievable feelings and experiences of love and loss. A Beautiful Hell is a testament to the magnificent, and catastrophic emotions that are produced when life puts the strength of love up against a terminal disease. If you are, or ever have, watched a loved one face the challenges of a terminal illness, Carol Kapaun Ratchenski’s A Beautiful Hell will speak to you. It will force you to face the journey through the darkness, but not without giving you a flicker of hope to light the way.

“My two year old son died with Purple Passionflower polish on his toes and fingernails.” A Beautiful Hell by Carol Kapaun Ratchenski wrenches your heart as you follow her through the birth and death of her son. A compilation of poems that forego the flowery language in favor of gritty reality, the reader is pulled alongside her as cancer conquers the life of her son. From short snippets of a scene that lasts for a split second to events that seem to endure forever, the prose is easy to read through in a single sitting. During the tragic event, we are transported inside Ratchenski’s mind as she suffers through her sorrow, meets selfless strangers, and contemplates life in the silent minutes in between. Ratchenski does not hold back nor does she pull any punches with the amount of sorrow that emanates from the pages. But the curious human way to continue on despite the hardest setbacks is critical in Ratchenski’s recovery.Somber, heartrending, and articulately beautiful, A Beautiful Hell leaves you emotionally drained yet fulfilled, mentally tired but still contemplative, and inevitably grateful to have opened the pages.
