Varg Vikernes kicks ass and I'm pretty sure that this is his wife that helped write this book! I own all his books except his roll-playing books! These books are worth it! Short but sweet!

Don't get too focused on grammar here. English is not the authors' first language; may not even be their second, and they tend to write in a speaking style. What is presented in these short and inexpensive books is an interpretation of mythology I have never heard anywhere else. The metaphors of birth, life and death, even reincarnation are explained realistically, not in a supernatural way as the Christianization of the religion has done.I have associated with Asatru/Heathenism/Paganism for years but not totally embraced it as I do now.I have Parts I through IV so far- awaiting more from Varg and Marie.

Amazing explanation of what is called the Norse myth Thrymskvida, of the Poetic Edda. Instead of a curious story about odd battles between mythical beings, Thor's hammer, etc., Marie Cachet's unique and very original explanation of the poem demonstrates that it was and is an intellectually advanced "scientific, medical" explanation of birth and a proof of rebirth as realized by the Nordic peoples of the so-called prehistoric times. Together with Varg Vikernes' presentation of the Norse-language poem and its English-language interpretation and with his translation of Marie Cachet's explanation (French to English) of the true meaning of the poem, the 30 minutes time for reading this short book, is one of the most beneficial 30 minutes of a half-century lifetime. I look forward to the next book (books) of this series.

I like the book it made me think a lot compared to the the length of the book the book is short but full of meaning. Not like a lot of pop science book's where the scientist put in his idea in 20p spaced out in a 250p book and the cowrither or the scientist put in a lot of other science (mostly the same as in other pop science books) and somtimes small coments how it in some way connect to the subjects. The Intro is great and make a lot of sense. It meade me see paganism in a another lightI'd it made me understand a more of human nature and culture. The translation was of "Prymaskvida" (I unsure how to spell it whith English leters)Intresting. One improvement the Varg can make to the English version is to phush verse 5 to next page so the rest of the verses original and translations come on the same pages. I found myself fliping fort and back. The interpretation of the story was intresting. But I am not convinced jet so I have to read more and think more first. The build quality is wery solid even more solid then some hard backs resistant to teraring and force. Instead of curling of the cover you get from most paper backs you get the the front page standing up at a angle from the book. I prefer it to normal paper backs.Ps I am not a native English speaker.

Amazing book, I am a huge fan of Varg Vikernes's work, and I am giddy at each and every book him and his wife write. The book is clear and to the point. It has deep meaning that can be rarely found. Great book I would recommend it to anyone interested in their heritage/ European Paganism

This really helped my head and soul. I have always loved fairy tales. I love you Varg and Marie. Xxxx

I highly recommend all 3 books from Varg Vikernes and Marie Cachet’s Paganism Explained series. I hope they release many more. RobertG305

I enjoyed the book, and I have had a growing interest for several years now in European paganism and other traditions as well. I have no doubt that there are many interpretations, and people will argue that one set is more accurate or correct as another but that has no concern for me. As an educated historian, I have come to expect to have to read many sources and manage to pull what they hold in common as being most important.

Review

this book provides an excellent overview of dietary interventions and would be a valuable resource approach is thorough and balances technical and practical information skillfully. Author: Eletronic Journal of Applied PsychologyOften overlooked by professionals, dietary interventions in autistic spectrum disorders can be very helpful and more importantly, are something that parents and carers can actually do to help the children. However, many different diets have been suggested and parents/carers can waste time and money trying the wrong diet for their particular child. Dr Aitken's book gives much-needed practical advice on matching the diet to the child and clear explanations about the biochemical background involved. Essential reading for anyone caring for a child with ASD. Author: Dr Rosemary Waring, University of BirminghamThere is a great deal to praise about this book: the format, the style where science is both readable and comprehensible, the facts, the theories and claims, and a hefty dose of reality. There is a considerable amount of research available showing scientific evidence for the effects of various diets on people with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs). The problem is, much of this is scattered across various journals and research magazines, and few people have the time or energy to search through the library for these sources. This book provides a good, solid review of which diets have science supporting them, and which ones have yet to have any research studies done, but have been reported to have beneficial effects by parents and/or make sense to those who know biochemistry. This said, be prepared to wade through more biochemistry than you will have been exposed to, unless that was your major in college. Also a minor problem for the American reader will be the use of some British colloquial language, such as crisps and biscuits.Aitken's book is NOT a "how to" book for diets. It is a "why to try it, and why it makes sense" book, and does not contain much detailed information on how to actually do the diets, what needs to be removed (in many cases), and contains no recipes. This said, if you have tried diets with your child or yourself, or would like to, this may be a good place to start looking for WHICH of the diets available is most likely to provide benefits. All in all, the major errors were those of omission: while on p. 187, he mentions that it can take more than 6 months for all gluten to be released from the diet, he fails to follow up with a definitive timetable. Dependent upon the person, tests show that gluten can take 3-9 months completely leave the body of a person. Casein takes between 3 and 5 days for total clearing, which is never mentioned. This means that for a true trial rotation of a gluten and casein free diet, trial period of at least 6 months and more likely one year will be required. Also not mentioned is that besides dietary sources, gluten and casein are likely to be found in personal care products such as lotion and shampoo, and that gluten can be absorbed through the skin during use of Play-doh and other common play products. Parents should also know that, due to the levels of toxin released in some children, it is best not to do the GF/CF diet in one fell swoop, but to remove and reduce levels in the body first. Otherwise, major behavior problems, cravings, and possibly even hospitalization may sabotage the diet from the start. The other MAJOR omission is the complete lack of reference to soy, unfortunately, this is common in most works on the GF/CF diet. To quote another source, "Soy is known to be a highly allergenic food, and although it is a legume, its protein is structurally similar to that of milk. Soy allergy is common in babies and children with milk allergy." (The Encyclopedia of Dietary Interventions for the Treatment of Autism and Related Disorders, Seroussi & Lewis, 2008) It should also be mentioned that while the pathway for damage by gluten in Autism appears dissimilar to those with Celiac Disease, people with either disorder (or with both, as the case may be) can have an intolerance to gluten, casein, and soy proteins due to the similar nature of these proteins on a chemical level. This is a particular concern, because Soy milk is usually the first source of a milk replacement parents seek, and often the most easily available. Parents need to know BEFORE they start the diet that replacing casein with soy is a bad idea, and that they should search for gluten-free rice, almond, or potato milk depending upon the needs of the child. The last error of omission is that the author fails to mention that a child put on a diet may get worse before s/he gets better. This is usually due to toxin release. A major source of diet "failure" is that the child gets as far as the toxin-release phase and has a major melt-down, or develops lesions on the skins and the parents panic and return the child to his or her prior diet. When I went through my gluten release, the toxin release was major and readily apparent - approximately 3 1/2 months after I removed gluten from my diet, I broke out in huge, red, open sores all over my body for a week and a half. Reintroduction of gluten to see what the effects were after a year on the diet brought them back, and minor exposures to gluten since have resulted in the appearance of smaller, scattered red sores on my body.I do advocate taking supplements and vitamins, however, when it comes to digestive enzymes, it is best to stick to the diet and take the supplements to help with accidental exposures, such as when your child gets hold of a regular cookie at a party. Otherwise, it is similar to taking a poison and an antidote for it at the same time - it probably won't kill you, but it may make you very ill. Avoid the problem by sticking to the diet that benefits you or your child as much as possible, and save the digestive enzymes for when you eat out and get exposed to crumbs.I should, perhaps, mention that I am diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome as an adult, and work with children on the autism spectrum, many of whom are on special diets. I have seen beneficial results from diet in both myself and my clients. It is worth mentioning that the Feingold Diet, the simplest of the diets that Aitkin covers, seems of benefit to almost every child, regardless of diagnosis or lack thereof.I may alter my diet further in response to this book and other sources I have read, however, it is unlikely that I will go as far as the full "Simple Restriction Diet" in the long term, although I may try it for a period of weeks to remove remaining toxins as part of my yearly program.

After having just recently read Susan Lord's "Getting Your Kid on a Gluten-Free Casein-Free Diet" (see my review), discovering this text by Aitken on a recent visit to the Washington University in Saint Louis School of Medicine bookstore was a welcome invitation to discover for myself the recent (as of early-2009) research in this field that I had yet to come across elsewhere. Aitken's exploration of the main dietary approaches that have been advocated for individuals exhibiting Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) is superb. The polyunsaturated fat (PUFA), oxalate, and phenol metabolism diagrams were what originally attracted me, due to my chemistry background, but the reason I decided to read this book was to gain the knowledge to understand from a research perspective many of the ASD diets in existence. After discussing diet in general and dietary interventions, the author presents the diets that are currently used with ASDs along with corresponding reasons for doing so: the Mackarness (Low Carbohydrate, High-Protein) Diet, the Feingold Diet, the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, the CF-GF Diet, the Low Oxalate Diet, the Low Glutamate Diet/GARD (Glutamate-Aspartate Restricted Diet), the Low Phenylalanine Diet, the Low Phenol Diet, the Body Ecology Diet, and the Rotation Diet. The last main section of the text discusses the Simple Restriction Diet (SRD) that the author, currently an independent consultant and previously Principal Clinical Neuropsychologist at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh, proposes. For each of these approaches, Aitken explores the potential benefits, evidence for and against each and its relation to different genetic conditions, and information where available on relevant publications, web resources, and support groups. In his extensive, informative introduction, the author notes that "a number of books are available dealing with specific dietary approaches to ASD", but that "the principal flaw in the literature to date is in being overinclusive - the general books assume that everyone requires the same optimum diet and those which deal with ASD assuming that every ASD person has the same problem with casein and gluten digestion/a fatty acid deficiency/a specific vitamin deficiency/another specific dietary factor and that, therefore, everyone with ASD should be helped by adopting the same diet. Neither conclusion is justified". While Lord mentioned in passing that when considering diet, one needs to "move on past the lame excuse, 'When I checked with the doctor, he said that he'd seen more kids harmed by poor nutrition from the diet than helped by the diet", Aitken addresses this stumbling block head-on: "Despite the popularity of dietary interventions for ASD, there is surprisingly little in the way of adequate peer-reviewed clinical research, and few randomized double-blinded controlled trials exist in this area. This is partly because such research is difficult - keeping people from knowing what they are eating and drinking, then changing their diet, without them being aware, for long enough to see whether there are any effects is hard to do and is not without significant ethical problems. It is also partly because there is far less funding available for such research compared to, say, funding made available to research a new patent medication. Unless there is a very strong incentive, food manufacturers are unlikely to rush to sponsor research on whether cutting down on or excluding their products may be beneficial. This is similar to the slow measured pace at which the tobacco industry tested the claims of effects from smoking on lung cancer, and the way that automobile manufacturers welcomed research on removing lead from petrol, thus reducing engine efficiency". In his conclusion, Aitken writes that "we should not be waiting for the research evidence on the minutiae of why [the adoption of such simple, inexpensive dietary means] works to come in first. For many families, this is happening anyway but is largely being ignored by the clinical and research community. To paraphrase the introductory quote from Gabriela Mistral: 'The child cannot wait, we need to act now'". Very well said.

I'm one of those people who reflexively recoil at the idea of selling - even though my success depends on serving clients. Tom McMakin and Doug Fletcher have helped me better understand my dilemma. Among us consultants and professional service providers, selling connotes persuasion - even an element of coercion. We understand that sustainable and profitable relationships are built on a foundation of trust and mutual respect. The hard sell approach is antithetical to such relationships. Consequently, we need to understand the conditions under which clients are prepared to buy. The authors spell these conditions out in grounded, actionable ways."How Clients Buy" is an antidote to the linear, seller-centered, personality-infatuated approach that is pervasive in the genre.

McMakin and Fletcher have written an excellent guide for how consultants can secure clients. They start from the assumption that selling consultant services is different than selling products and that typical sales techniques do not apply here and may be counterproductive. They then explain how client’s buy professional services and steps that are essential to secure the trust that is the foundation of that relationship. They explain the seven elements in a client’s decision journey to purchasing services, and go through each element in detail offering insights and tactics to help you through each step of the process. All their key points are backed up with evidence from interviews they have down with leading professionals in the field, citations from existing literature and research, and their own extensive experience in the industry. The authors note that there is often a feeling among consultants that selling conflicts with professional ethics which puts them at a disadvantage. They debunk the myth that you need to have a sales personality to be successful in this domain and they help you focus your efforts in a way that will improve your chances of success and keep the time invested in business development a manageable part of your business. The book is a pretty easy read, well written, well laid out, and they often make their case with interesting stories of people they interviewed or from history. What I like best about the book is that it is logically organized in a way that makes it easy for you to refer back to points or steps that they have explained. If you are the rainmaker for your firm or aspire to be one, this book is worth your time. My own experience is that even if you are good at promoting services and securing clients, you know that you can always improve and this book offers a systematic approach to do just that.

Over the years, I’ve read quite a few business books about selling one’s wares and finding clients. Each of them have been helpful, on some level, because they have at least a few useful nuggets of information or pearls of wisdom. The trouble is that the key takeaways and guidelines that one wants to get from these books are often lost in a sea of unnecessary information or “filler” that seems to be there just to round out the book. That makes them a bit frustrating to get through.Consequently, I was pleasantly surprised with “How Clients Buy”- a book that I found just by a search on Amazon. It’s a manageable size, which can be read quickly, and most of the text is germane and illustrative of the points being made. The tone that the writers use is (a bit too) friendly, but their information and insights are to-the-point and effective.I’ve been providing professional architectural services for over 30 years, and over that time, I’ve accrued a fair bit of knowledge about how to find and retain clients. But even with that experience, I’ve found that one can get too casual with some of the fundamentals and not be as diligent as one should be in pursuing new clients (or maintaining old ones). This book is a very good reminder of what really matters and what works.I like the fact that the book is geared towards the professional services industries, and that it offers a well-organized approach with a very good set of guidelines and to-do’s for how to focus one’s efforts and be more effective. I found that it’s a very useful read for anyone, like me, who’s trying to build relationships and pursue new business - more so than many other books of its kind that I’ve read to date.

For the past 20 years I have operated a consulting business providing leadership training and coaching and prior to that worked for many years in general management positions in manufacturing operations ... so I have exposure to both sides of this business development process. From my perspective, Tom and Doug have done a great job of capturing the dramatic differences between cultivating new business in professional services vs. sales and marketing in traditional businesses. Their 7-step framework accurately lays out the key elements in a straight forward, easily understood way. Practical application insights and techniques are then provided for each of these steps. Examples and stories scattered throughout make it an enjoyable read. I nodded my head in agreement as I read, so many of these ideas are not new to experienced service providers. But what is new is having these key elements laid out in a clear framework. This book will be particularly helpful to those who are just getting started in professional services ... or to those coaching other service providers in business development. It's also a great reminder for those who may know these things but don't always practice them.In summary, this book does a great job of explaining the keys to successful business development for professional services and then provides a helpful framework with practical suggestions to allow any service provider to implement these concepts. I found it so helpful and useful that I am giving copies to my family and friends who provide professional services. As part of my job, I read a lot of business books and this is one of the most useful I have read.

King's Counsel: A Memoir of War, Espionage, and Diplomacy in the Middle East, by Jack O'Connell

From Publishers Weekly

O'Connell, a former CIA agent and attorney for Jordan's King Hussein, recounts four decades of Middle East history in this provocative memoir. The author, CIA station chief in Amman from 1963 to 1971, was delegated to "keep King Hussein in power" and served as the young king's main point of contact and channel to the U.S. Following his retirement from the CIA, O'Connell became Hussein's U.S. attorney and Jordan's American lobbyist until the king's death in 1999. Drawing on his unique access, the author argues that while the Arabs wanted an end to hostilities and Hussein relentlessly pursued secret negotiations with the Israelis, neither Israel nor the U.S. wanted or actively pursued peace. O'Connell characterizes U.S. diplomacy in the region as hypocritical and charges that Kissinger fomented the 1973 Yom Kippur war. He also contends that the U.S. was doing Israel's "dirty work" in opposing Saddam Hussein in 1990 and could have negotiated an Iraqi withdrawal from Kuwait without resorting to war. O'Connell's eyewitness account of a tragic era in a tumultuous region is long on drama, revealing vignettes, and controversy, but short on balance. More than memoir, this is a passionate brief for King Hussein and the Arab pursuit of peace. (May) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.

The book is really interesting specially the few stories I didn’t know and he is accurate in his info and from the words he used he 100% knows the culture very well.King Hussein was very special , until this day people remember him on his birthday and on the anniversary of the day he passed away . we love him dearly and it’s very genuine . i was listening to a journalist who is considered an opposition member and he is not allowed in any Arab country nor his paper , because he is highly critical of all of the leadership in the Middle East . however he even admits that the love the people carry for King Hussein and the Hashemite family is something special , I compare King Hussein to a CEO who started a country instead of a company , I lived 21 years. In Jordan and I remember the day he passed away we felt we lost our dad not just king in 2011 I was moving homes and locked my storage so I called a lock smith and the guy as soon as he saw me he asked were r u from ? and I knew he is from Israel from the accent .As soon as I said I’m from Jordan the guy hugged me and told me how much he loved King Hussein . I was speechless the guy gave me a hug and the first word was King Hussein , to help understand this I remembered an incident King Hussein leadership and courage made a huge difference , when a Jordanian soldier shoot Israeli civilians King Hussein went to each home apologized and gave his condolences one of the people who lost a child named the baby girl she delivered after that incident Jordan because of King Hussein and sure enough when we talked this incident was the main reason that guy loved him and respected him .

As one who worked for the Intelligence Community for 48 years, taught strategic intelligence warning at the national level and facilitated case studies of past intelligence successes and failure, this book filled in so many knowledge gaps. I have always admired King Hussein, but often wondered how he walked the fine line between being the guardian of the Heshamite Kingdom and truly wanting peace in the Middle East. The author's direct knowledge of King Hussein's initiatives is priceless and I am so thankful that he wrote this book. He omits at least a couple of conversations between the King and Sadaam Hussein, which my still be classified or he just chose not to discuss, which may have darkened the King's role ever so slightly, but overall this book rates as one of the best I have ever read. He tells a story that no one else could possibly know. Highly recommended.

An good read from someone who had unique access to one of the middle east's most interesting and misunderstood leaders. King Hussein could have been the region's Mandela, but he was taken too soon. O'Connell has a perspective that sometimes lacks nuance when it comes to Israeli decision makers. While many of his observations are correct he doesn't take into account the domestic give and take inside Israel. Jordan largely made its decisions based on the King's will, but in Israel that wasn't the case. It might have seem that way to an outsider, but there was never the kind of consensus about the West Bank that he implies.Overall a good read with some interesting insights. I'd recommend it for anyone already familiar with the middle east who wants some behind the scenes drama.

A very fascinating work by a man who was "in the room where it happened" during some of the most significant historical events in the modern Middle East. O'Connell spent much of his CIA career working directly with King Hussein, and continued to work as his attorney afterward. It comes as no surprise, then, that he paints the King and Jordan generally in a favorable light. That does not diminish the quality of the book, but the reader should be aware that alternate interpretations and narratives exist. I recommend Kai Bird's The Good Spy along with this, as Bob Ames, another CIA Arabist, had a different understanding of events that compliments and contradicts O'Connell's.

This book offers a very good perspective on the Middle East and King Hussein. This is, in my view, just as good as an autobiography because even though it's written from an outsider's perspective, the author was close enough to know the truth. The internal workings of the State Department and CIA are also fascinating from the view of a layman reader.

interesting and will written...

It's a very thin book for a 30 year or so career. Hopefully what he was unable to say is said in a well researched biography of Jack O'Connell; his life is a real page turner in and of itself.

I purchased this book for a class on politics in the Middle East. I never thought it would be as interesting as it was. It was a fantastic read and very informative.

Review

"Irresistible.... We owe Mundy gratitude for rescuing these hidden figures from obscurity. Even more valuable is her challenge to the myth of the eccentric, inspired, solitary male genius, like Alan Turing."―Elaine Showalter, Washington Post"Code Girls...finally gives due to the courageous women who worked in the wartime intelligence community."―Smithsonian.com"Code Girls is a riveting account of the thousands of young coeds who flooded into Washington to help America win World War II. Liza Mundy has written a thrilling page-turner that illuminates the patriotism, rivalry, and sexism of the code-breakers' world."―Lynn Povich, author of The Good Girls Revolt"Code Girls is an extraordinary book by an extraordinary author. Liza Mundy's portraits of World War II codebreakers are so skillfully and vividly drawn that I felt as if I were right there with them--mastering ciphers, outwitting the Japanese army, sinking ships, breaking hearts, and even accidentally insulting Eleanor Roosevelt. I am an evangelist for this book: You must read it."―Karen Abbott, New York Times bestselling author of Sin in the Second City and Liar, Temptress, Solider, Spy"Code Girls reveals a hidden army of female cryptographers, whose work played a crucial role in ending World War II. With clarity and insight, Mundy exposes the intertwined narratives of the women who broke codes and the burgeoning field of military intelligence in the 1940s. I cannot overstate the importance of this book; Mundy has rescued a piece of forgotten history, and given these American heroes the recognition they deserve."―Nathalia Holt, New York Times bestselling author of Rise of the Rocket Girls"Mundy is a fine storyteller.... A sleek, compelling narrative.... The book is a winner. Her descriptions of codes and ciphers, how they worked and how they were broken, are remarkably clear and accessible. A well-researched, compellingly written, crucial addition to the literature of American involvement in World War II."―Kirkus (starred review)"Similar to Nathalia Holt's The Rise of the Rocket Girls and Margot Lee Shetterly's Hidden Figures, this is indispensable and fascinating history. Highly recommended for all readers."―Library Journal (starred review)"Mundy's fascinating book suggests that [the Code Girls'] influence did play a role in defining modern Washington and challenging gender roles--changes that still matter 75 years later."―Washingtonian"Fascinating.... Addictively readable.... [Mundy] displays a gift for creating both human portraits and intensely satisfying scenes."―Boston Globe"Like Hidden Figures, this well-crafted book reveals a remarkable slice of unacknowledged U.S. history.... Captivating."―The Christian Science Monitor

I heard about Code Girls several months before publication, and was determined to read it as soon as possible. My mother was one of the code breakers at Arlington Hall, a largely civilian group of women who worked under the auspices of the US Army. She fit the typical profile of Arlington Hall recruits: a teacher who left her job at a girls’ boarding school in Virginia to not only serve her country, but do more exciting and challenging work than was available to most women in peacetime. (The military recruited heavily for women with four-year degrees, which were rare at the time but required for teachers.) Arlington Hall was a place where a woman could fulfill her intellectual potential, where she was encouraged to learn and do as much as possible, as fast as possible, and work as hard as possible. The code breakers’ work was crucial to winning the war.According to this book, the women worked for seven days straight, with their eighth “off” day spent on shopping, errands, and probably housework as well. However, my mother did not mind the long hours. On her commute from Washington, she even ran into Eleanor Roosevelt one morning around 6; Roosevelt said she took early walks to evade the Secret Service. Like other women in this book, my mother roomed with another woman who was also a code breaker and who became a close friend, and she enjoyed the camaraderie of her whole code-breaking group.Author Liza Mundy weaves a number of narrative strands. She discusses the work done at not only Arlington Hall, but at the separate Navy code-breaking facility (where most code breakers were WAVES) and at Sugar Camp. Sugar Camp was an NCR rustic retreat outside Dayton, Ohio used in peacetime to train salesmen; during the war it housed WAVES who wired the bombes that NCR manufactured to break the German Enigma codes. Mundy gives as much technical detail on code breaking as the average, nonspecialist reader can probably handle. This includes work done during World War 1 and between the wars. Some World War 1 code breakers carried right on into World War 2.I was disappointed that almost all the World War 2 information focuses on the Japanese codes. It’s true that the Japanese codes were extremely challenging. They were complex, the Japanese used several different codes, and the codes were changed constantly. It was hard to find Americans who knew Japanese. The code breakers were given some basic relevant vocabulary. Then--Mundy mentions only in passing, late in the book--the decoded messages were passed to translators, many of them missionaries or children of missionaries who had lived in Japan. Mundy also mentions somewhere that the messages of many other countries were decoded at Arlington Hall. (I’d assume this was also true of the Navy facility.) But that’s all she says. The organization of the code-breaking facilities seems to have been complex, with people working in many different groups for both efficiency and secrecy. I gained little sense of the overall organization or what the groups were. I have no idea what my mother worked on, but my guess is messages in French. She had a BA in French, she was fluent in French, and I’d assume Vichy France was pumping out messages at the same phenomenal rate as other countries.Mundy may have focused primarily on the Japanese code-breaking group due to her choice to tell the personal stories of a number of code breakers, especially Dorothy (Dot) Braden, now Dorothy Braden Bruce. Dot worked in a Japanese group and Mundy interviewed her extensively for this book. Dot’s personal life included her close friendship with her roommate, code breaker Ruth Weston; Dot’s on-off engagement to a soldier named George Rush; and Dot’s postwar marriage to another soldier named Jim Bruce. Dot also had brothers in the war. In between handling all that coded text, Dot and other code breakers wrote huge numbers of letters, to husbands, fiancés, brothers, even soldiers they’d never met who wanted pen pals. The workforce was mostly female—my mother said there was only one man in her group, an elderly Egyptologist who had worked on cracking hieroglyphics. But the code breakers’ lives were full of men, to the extent that (Mundy relates) pregnancies were not uncommon among unmarried women at Arlington Hall. (The Navy was much tighter and required even married pregnant women to quit work.) I can’t help wondering whether my 30-ish mother was also feverishly writing to soldiers and dating numerous men when they were on leave. Certainly not my father—they did not meet till after the war and in any case, he was rejected by the draft due to a medical condition.Although Mundy goes back and forth between code-breaking organizations and various personal stories, she manages to move through the war narrative more or less chronologically. Her descriptions of military and naval action are mostly focused on the end of the war, especially the excitements of D-Day and the Japanese surrender. My mother said that two of her coworkers always joked that “by the end of the war they’d be cutting out paper dolls.” When my mother and others came in after their day off, they discovered those two coworkers had spent that day making paper dolls, using every scrap of paper they’d saved up, and had hung the dolls all over the office. Mundy mentions that people danced in the streets of Washington. However relieved the women code breakers were, their immediate experiences were not altogether joyous. The Arlington Hall workers were given a speech encouraging them all to quit work as soon as possible. Most did, at least after they married or had a child. (A few did stay into the Cold War and beyond.) The US mounted a reverse recruitment campaign, telling all women it was their patriotic duty to turn over their jobs to returning men. Women married the fiancés they’d been corresponding with and proceeded to have babies. Some were happy housewives; some were not. Many, including my mother, missed the sense of challenge and purpose they’d had as code breakers, and went back to work. After the war my mother got a graduate degree in mathematics, which my father (a physicist) never understood. Her verbal skills were so much stronger, he said; why was she determined to study mathematics? But mathematics was needed and valued at Arlington Hall, and many women did not discover their aptitude for it until they worked there. My mother waited till her children were old enough, then spent the rest of her career as a college math professor. Most of the code breakers still alive are now in assisted living facilities. It’s good that Mundy interviewed some, because they were told their work was top secret and should never, ever be revealed. Many revealed nothing substantive while they were alive, including my mother, though it was clearly one of the happiest times of her life. When I was 12 or 13, my mother sat me down and taught me the rudiments of code breaking. This was just the beginning, she said; the work at Arlington Hall was much harder. What she was teaching me was not classified. But I should learn something about breaking codes, because I’d never know when I might need to.

In the same vein as "Hidden Figures", this history of the female codebreakers that contributed significantly to the progress of WWII is long overdue. The author interviewed a number of the codebreakers and their families and researched the topic extensively when the previously classified information was finally declassified. The codebreakers were sworn to silence while employed and for many years afterwards; in most cases their husbands and families had no idea of the importance and complexity of the job the young women were doing during the war. It was generally believed that they had fulfilled some menial clerical function. The author incorporates personal information from a number of the "code girls" and factual information on many others. Women were responsible for many of the most important code breaking accomplishments during the war, and their efforts definitely helped the U.S. to win the war on both fronts. They actually learned of the Japanese surrender before many in the government and military did!Women were recruited from colleges and universities, and many had been trained as teachers, one of the few occupations available to educated women at the time. They underwent extensive screening and training to ensure that they were fit for the work. They arrived in Washington, D.C. in droves and were housed in hastily constructed rather Spartan accommodations. The work was scheduled 24 hours a day, and housing was so limited that it wasn't uncommon for multiple girls to use the same bed. They were housed and fed, and provided with a wage that was more than any of them could ever had made as teachers; nevertheless their pay rate was still 25-30% less than men doing the same work. It was an exciting time to be in the Capitol, and the women also had lively social lives, some of them being courted by multiple men in uniform and all of them maintaining a steady correspondence with one or more men who were serving the country. The technical information relating to the strategy and tactics of code breaking was quite detailed, but somewhat inscrutable to me so I skimmed quickly some of those sections; suffice it to say that it required an extreme amount of organization, attention to detail, a mathematical orientation, razor sharp memories and ability to see patterns, both small and large.I found the book quite riveting, with enough personal detail to enliven the story, and enough technical detail to establish just how serious and demanding their work was. I can definitely imagine that a movie will be made of this exciting and interesting chapter in our nation's history.

I've a library of 100s of WWII books, this one rates near the top. Oddly, it tells a broad brush of WWII that is highly accurate, carries all the major details, and flows naturally as part of the back story. This author earns her pay even just on research, yet it's also very well written and even a page turner. It also has something very valuable to me as a man, it gives me a perspective into what happens for females when provided the same opportunities I was provided as a man. That brings me to pause, because I took for granted my privilege as a white male throughout my career. I somehow learned the same lesson that this book teaches because throughout my now past career in logic and programming, when in a position to hire, I more often found females were those who did more to further technical teams and projects. I started to read this because of my insatiable quest for WWII information, but it ended up reframing my perspective on my career and accomplishments due to the contributions of women. It shouldn't be, but that is a humbling realization because it forces respect to come to the surface in a way I missed when it was happening. It's a sad thing to ponder now in light of our society devolving away from these lessons learned, but perhaps that just makes the book more timely.

I was lucky enough to meet a code breaker in a German class. She was my mother’s age, but we still became great friends. I admired her for her fluent German and her quick mind. I was honored to attend her funeral when she passed away at 93. She was buried with full military honors in Arlington Cemetery. That is why it is so great to read about what she did.
