Like many roof texts, this one is helpful if you are installing plain 3-tab shingles to a simple gable roof with maybe a valley and a dormer.If you have a hip roof or hip roof section, or if you are installing shingles other than a plain 3-tab type, this text won't help you much.I'm a chronically addicted do-it-yourselfer for everything. I learn everything by gathering multiple texts on a subject: electronics, mechanics, carpentry, among others ... and now roofing.I think that no single textbook tells you all you need to know about anything so I have to recommend that you not rely on just one text for your roofing project. With that in mind, let me say that this text I'm reviewing titled "Roofing the Right Way" is helpful towards broadening your roofing knowlege base but it's not comprehensive enough to be your "bible."As another reviewer has said, this text feels, to me also, a little dated. However, if you are installing plain 3-tab shingles or plain roll roofing to a simple gable roof, you might be able to rely on this text alone. Not many of us fall into that category, however. If you are installing dimensional shingles on a hip roof, you'll definitely need other texts besides this one.

Very informative book. Helped me do the roof on my new garage with a gable dormer. No leaks and looks great! Lots of great info. the pictures could use an update. Some are hard to see exactly what they want to show but I am no novice. I bought it mainly because I never shingled a roof with a gable dormer.

This book was very helpful, and will continue to be. I just wish the pictures were in color.

I used the third edition of this book as my primary resource for roofing my mom's house back in 2008. Prior to that, I had absolutely no roofing knowledge or experience. It was a true 'DIY' attempt. My mom's house is a fairly simple two-gable roof with a valley where the two gables meet, and I used 30-year, 3-tab shingles. So, this particular roofing job would likely be classified as 'simple'. Still, the book provided everything I needed to feel comfortable with the 2000 sq. ft. job.I just finished putting a new roof on my own house using architectural shingles and I found myself referencing the book many times throughout the project. The book lumps architectural shingles in with fiberglass-based shingles, and doesn't really discuss application of architectural shingles by themselves. But, most of the techniques used for 3-tab shingles still apply to architectural, such as the use of border shingles, how to cut capping shingles, laying chalk lines, etc. In fact, when I called for bids on materials, I was often given a contractor discount because I could speak fluent 'roofer', knowing how many squares I needed, how many bundles of border and capping shingles, the types of flashing, the different types of underlayment, etc.I gave it five stars because, although the book may not teach you every last thing you need to know, it's a tremendous value, and I find that if you combine the knowledge in this book with the overriding manufacturers instructions, you can't go wrong.

This book does a decent job of explaining roofing to the novice. It covers all the basics of planning, tear-off, prep, and installation, including a variety of specific types of roofs and sections. It felt a bit dated to me as it has very limited coverage of laminated (architectural) shingles and use of power nailers. There is a greater amount of detail on hand-nailing and alternative traditional materials than you see in some other books. The pictures are all in black-and-white which makes it very hard to tell what is supposed to be conveyed. More drawings or color photos would make things easier, particularly given that some of the methods are complex and the descriptions aren't always written clearly. All-in-all this book is adequate to the task for most do-it-yourselfers, but may not be ideal depending on your specific project.

My favorite part about Oakland is that it's a Victorian, rural garden. That's what initially got me to visit, but now I love everything about it, especially that the Historic Oakland Foundation has brought back to the city the original use of the cemetery as a park, not just a burial ground. It's hard to explain how they can hold road races, historical Halloween tours, and music festivals there without feeling like you're in a cemetery, but they do. This book has great pictures and a lot of great information. It would be great to read before you visit, or to have as a souvenir.

I volunteered at Oakland Cemetery and this book brought to life everything that I share with our visitors. It's helped me to remember all of the cemetery "residents" and puts a face to a name. It also provides a great historical overview of the founding fathers of Atlanta.

In an era divided by class and race Oakland reflects those divisions reflected by how the races were divided even in death but in the markers that commemorate their lives. The authors vividly capture that here and the evolution of Atlanta from Antebellum society into the genesis of the "New South". Here the men in both Blue and Gray lie in close proximity to each other. The rich and famous lie in close proximity to the average souls who worked to shape and create the resurgence of Atlanta in the Victorian era, making for a richly varied tableau about the shaping and growth of Atlanta into the city it is today. Indeed, Oakland is a metaphor for the many changes that have swept Atlanta and the South, going from the division and horrors of chattel slavery, to Reconstruction and Jim Crow, to the breaking down of society's divisions in the Civil Rights era and beyond. I'm many respects this book is a great resource for those wishing to visit Oakland with a greater respect and understanding but it also is as essential for understanding Atlanta as great books such as Where Peachtree Meets Sweet Auburn: A Saga of Race and Family.

Roger Kamien received his B.A. in Musicology from Columbia and his M.A. and PhD. from Princeton. Kamien taught for 2 years at Hunter College and for 20 years at Queens College, where he coordinated the music appreciation courses. In 1983, he was appointed to the Zubin Mehta Chair in Musicology at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In addition to Music: An Appreciation, Prof. Kamien has written numerous articles and reviews, co-wrote A New Approach to Keyboard Harmony, and edited the Norton Scores. He is an accomplished pianist and, in recent years, has formed a two-piano team with his wife, Anita.

You will NOT have access to the website needed to listen to the examples. I nearly failed a class because this didn't come with the proper study resources included in the physical copy.

Apparently the world’s largest empire of the time contributed nothing to medieval music or renaissance music. Neither Spain, it’s music or it’s impact on Latin American music or Medieval Latin American music are ever mentioned. We don’t need a wall when we have intellectual disparagement of a whole culture and language that spans the globe.

No matter what the customer service representatives tell you (and they told me the same thing twice), THIS BOOK DOES NOT COME WITH THE ACCESS CODE, which you must have in order to use it in a college class. The access code will set you back another $100 +/-. Consider buying a used copy or Amazon Book Rental, to offset the code cost.So that this review isn't completely negative: the book is very useful for propping open a door on a beautiful day, or on a cold winter's night to ignite your fireplace.

If you need to use this book for a college music class that requires the access code to listen to the music online, you're screwed. This book is way over priced to not even get what you need to complete your college course. Not getting this access code when I waited to receive the book forever has now put me behind in the class. Now I am having to go through the return process and still going to my college campus bookstore and buying this book again to actually get what I need.This was not noted in the description about the book and was definitely a rip off. DO NOT BUY!

Not only is it overpriced, I didn't get what I expected. The whole point of college students buying this was for the access code and they didnt even specify if it was included or not. Thanks for letting me waste my money.

Excellent textbook to accompany my music appreciation class last semester. The book is structured in an easy-to-follow format that begins by teaching the elements of music, giving the student a good basis of knowledge to learn about the musical periods.

It's a good history on music, concise, but provides a lot of good info. If you're taking MUSI 1306 please get this book instead of the overpriced one, unless your prof specifically asks for that (mine didn't) this will save you 100 dollars seriously and you can find all the music on the cover and back of the book. From there look up the music on Youtube people, this is some old music. They're available online. Save you moolah!
