My favorite of Emmet Fox's books. Fox has a way of taking the words of Jesus and turning them them directly toward you. He's unflinching, not afraid to state the obvious, and not afraid to defy largely agreed upon religious conventions. I highly recommend this book. It will change you, should you choose to let it.

I absolutely love this book!. Emmet Fox originally wrote the book in the late 1930's but it's still relevant to this day. The very first time I read "Sermon on the Mount" (back in 2013) I had no idea it was originally published 75+ years before. The text is beautifully written and Fox had a way of describing advanced concepts first in complex ways then simplifying it down to something easily digestible. I believe this technique was used so that people with different backgrounds and comprehension skills can read & reread this book and still come away with something new to think about every time. I would recommend "Sermon on the Mount" to anyone looking to expand their spirituality or to anyone just wanting to broaden their horizons through the classics... and that's what this book is...a classic.

I was thinking that this would be just another book that would incrementally add to my spiritual journey. I was wrong, dead wrong. This book has served to reshape me in every way. I am in a 12 step program and have developed a deep faith through the holy spirit yet, had not reconciled my religious experiences and understanding as a child and student in the Catholic church. This book is a significant read. After 3 years of reading and re-reading this book I now have a solid foundation in faith that continues to grow. It has reintroduced me to Jesus, who he was, who he is, and is shaping me into the man God has intended. The book gave me enough understanding that my current "significant read" is the bible. I simply love this book.

I keep reading it again and again. I am not particularly religious but just love the encouragement and the positive view of spiritual life especially when we are bombarded with negative comments of all sorts. I like knowing that I can make a difference in my life and in the process hopefully in the life of others.

Emmet Fox commanded 1,000's of followers as a modern day spiritual philosopher and interpreter of the bible with his 'Scientific Truth' about Jesus, The Sermon on The Mount and The Lord's Prayer. No doubt his simplification of God, Truth and religions still hits home as his followers have a website for all his work and free downloads by pdf of most of it. Also known as Bill W.'s source for most of his successful Alcoholic's Anonymous Big Book teachings and 12 Steps that remain the most effective treatment for alcoholism today, Emmet Fox' works will remain timeless too.

One of my favorite things about the book is Fox's bold statements: "Jesus did not teach a theology. He taught principles." Don't let that worry you. He neverthelEss convinces us that Jesus is the son of God and is worthy of the title Savior of the World. And be assured that Fox is not wushu washy on Jesus message: " look either Jesus meant what he said or he did not . I we believe he meant what he said in one part of scripture, then believe he meant what he said in the Gospel of Mathew that we are indeed to turn the other cheek, love our enemies, repay not evil with evil but repay evil with good!.

This book is a “power of positive thinking” book and does not align with biblical teaching. Its focus is on the power of our own minds to change things. For those who truly want to understand Jesus’ cross and His transforming power, this is not the book for you.

Second, when someone is evil, you need to understand that, their Christ Within is crying out for your help.LOVE YOUR ENEMY and forgive, so they are relieved of that extra burden, and others who are futher along on the spiritual path can do the same for you. God is all there is, God is Love, Love never created evil.I am into Emmet Fox. In the Lords Prayer, Jesus knew that his message would be corrupted overtime, but the Lords Prayer "Our Father", could not be misunderstood. It is Jesus pure teaching, safe, that too is a must read. It would end all conflict.

I am subscribed to a newsletter off BrainPickings.com (check them out) where they mention books to read, notable writers, and children's books. I was instantly drawn to this book and I knew right then and there I was meant to read it. It is a children's book. Large print, large photos, simple, concise. If I read it in silence, I am okay. But if I read it aloud I find myself tearing up and crying at the end. It is a wonderful, special book. I am so blessed to have this on my bookshelf, ready to read and remind myself at any time just how precious this life is to experience the divine.

Duck, Death and the Tulip is an understated, elegant children's book about death. Personifying death as younger children do, this book leads the reader through a gentle conversation on the nature of death, depicting it not as a malicious creature but as a fact of life. Death itself wears a housecoat and slippers, and Duck is impressively expressive in simple turns of the head or facial expressions. I haven't had the chance to read this with a child, but rather purchased it to share with my Children's Literature class. Based on the research, this book would be appropriate for children around 8, as this is the age when they begin to see death not as an entity, but as an unavoidable event which they have many questions about. This book offers a delicate way to start that conversation, and unlike many other books of its genre, it doesn't center the story around a sick grandparent or pet.

I assisting my professor on a project about how death is discussed in children's books, and I stumbled across this gem. It's bizarre, don't get me wrong, but something about the story and the illustrations (I would recommend buying this book for the illustrations alone) resonated with me. It's not going to coddle your child through a loved one's death, but does get the point across that death is just another part of life.

Lovely illustrations, beautifully written story. The character of Death is a bit scary but becomes approachable. And the ease of the relationship that develops says more about Life than anything.

I"d heard so much about this book that I had to buy a copy in order to read it. It is a thoughtful exploration of life and how it simply cannot go on forever. The imagery is so unique, it is a book I will remember always. It is at the same time sad and uplifting..

This is a great book to use to explain death to young children. Not strong on religion but clearly accepting beliefs of others.

Illustrations are precious and I love the story-- this book will either be a comfort or at the very least, an awakening of a new way of thinking about death.

About the Author

RAYMOND CHANDLER (1888-1959) turned to writing fiction at the age of forty-five, after a career as an oil executive. He published his first story in Black Mask in 1933, and his first novel, The Big Sleep, in 1939. Over his lifetime, Chandler wrote seven novels, several screenplays, and numerous short stories, and became the master practitioner of American hard-boiled crime fiction. OWEN HILL is the author of two mystery novels, a book of short fiction, and several books of poetry. He has reviewed crime novels for the Los Angeles Times and the East Bay Express. In 2005 he was awarded the Howard Moss residency for poetry at Yaddo. He is currently coediting the Berkeley Noir anthology, forthcoming in 2020. He works at Moe’s Books in Berkeley. PAMELA JACKSON is an editor, scholar, and librarian specializing in California literary and cultural history. She holds a PhD from UC Berkeley and an MLIS from UCLA and was coeditor, with Jonathan Lethem, of The Exegesis of Philip K. Dick. ANTHONY DEAN RIZZUTO is a professor of English at Sonoma State University, where he teaches (among other things) California ethnic literature and hard-boiled fiction. One of the essential reprints of 2018. The annotations are nearly as thrilling as Chandler's prose.

I thoroughly enjoyed this in-depth analysis of _The Big Sleep_. The notes dissect the themes, imagery, and background of Chandler's most famous novel. Additionally, it reveals Chandler's strategy of "cannibalizing" scenes from previously published stories to build TBS. As an added bonus, the notes compare and contrast the novel with the film.As the book's cover blurb recommends, if you haven't read TBS, you can read through without the notes. If you have read it, the notes will deepen your appreciation and understanding of the story.Reading this w/the annotations was pure pleasure.

I've read TBS previously in three different editions. The wonderful annotations make this edition the best. They put the reader in the 1930'3 LA scene of corruption with sharp observations that compliment Chandler's incomparable hard-boiled prose. However, the best line in the book - indeed, the best line in all of hard-boiled literature - doesn't get a comment. Here's the line: "Dead men are heavier than broken hearts." Critics generally find that the hard-boiled manner in telling a story began with Hemingway and Hammett. This edition makes plain that such a method started right here with The Big Sleep.

If you love Raymond Chandler and have read everything, both fiction and non-fiction, that is available, biographies, letters, everything, and have reconciled yourself to the failures of all those would-be Marlowe updaters to hit the mark ("New! A Philip Marlowe novel by the latest bandwagon rider!") (let's face it, Chandler died and he's not coming back) then this annotated edition is a gold mine. Each note is as tasty as the prose it illuminates and the only criticism is, why stop now? You've got more to do, people. Get on to the rest of the canon. The only negative is, the book ended and I wanted to stay immersed in a world that no longer lives except in our imaginations. (But then, that's all the worlds we think we inhabit, isn't it?)

I've read THE BIG SLEEP three or four times already, of course, but reading it this way -- with notes and supplemental materials on the right-hand page facing the text on the left-hand page -- made it feel so fresh it was almost new to me. If you love American crime fiction, you will never have more fun reading it than with this annotated version of THE BIG SLEEP. It's utterly mesmerizing stuff.

If you are a Chandler fan (and I am) then this Annotated version of "The Big Sleep" is a must read.I read it slowly over a month to savor it. I have read the book several times and seen the movie version with Humphrey Bogart probably 20 times. The annotations are drawn from the author's own letters, essays, and of course his other works, in particular the short stories that he cannibalized (Killer in the Rain, The Curtain) to form the novel, The Big Sleep. Comparisons to other authors such as Dashiell Hammett, Ross MacDonald, Robert B Parker, James Cain, Conan Doyle, etc as well as Romantic Poets (Chandler was educated in England and loved the Romantic Poets and playwrights hence the name Marlowe for his famous detective), and non-fiction works like "The Hero of a Thousand Faces" by Joseph Campbell. We also get a comparison to historical Los Angeles and environs in the early to mid 20th century to get a full understanding of the time and place where the story takes place. It contains maps, newspaper articles, and pictures.

This is the book you need if you want to immerse yourself in the quintessential nor city of the 40s and 50s. And of course I do. I was there in the 40s, the 50s, and as an adult in the mid 60s. It's all gone now, but I remember.

Very impressed thus far. It's not, and I'm guessing not intended to be the end all be all Java book. At least for me, it's simple, practical examples that I can use and refer to as I leverage other resources to learn Java to a level at which I'm employable. There are lots, LOTS of great books, videos and other resources to learn anything. The secret is to find what works for YOU. This appears to be what I need to help me understand other material. This is a supplement, not a primary source. It's worth more than it costs.

This is a concise, well written, and well organized book. I didn't even realize I was 'learning' until I was coding a project and got it correct without double checking punctuation, spelling, capitalization, etc. One warning, though, unless you're one of the lucky few who can pick up a skill simply by reading, coding the projects by hand transcription is almost a necessity. I love this book so far.

Finally a Java book that makes it easy to learn the basics. All other Java books I have read got into too much detail and explanation without proper examples. This book takes you step by step with easy to follow program from the beginning to the end.

As someone who has experience with Java for as long time, I still found the book to be very useful. It assumes the reader does not have prior knowledge of programming and starts of with the history/origin of Java and slowly building on concepts from there. Since the goal of the book is to learn Java in a day, not every minute nuance is given or every programming tidbit mentioned, as it should be. This is a good, quick introduction to Java and it will not disappoint. I also have the Learn Python in a day... book by this same author, and my comments are the same for it.

This is an excellent choice of introductory Java text. It is much more readable and complete than most in this price range. I first learned the Python language from the author's similar title on Python, so when I wanted to review Java I downloaded this text and found it to be of the same high quality. Clean, concise chapters make this text well suited for self paced study.

For $3 (kindle version) this book is a steal. Like any book (rather than say a bunch of scattered articles or blog pages) you're going to get a nicely synthesized set of information that guides you from top to bottom in a cohesive way.This book is particularly good for people who are already familiar with programming (especially scripting language folks like Python or Ruby) as it quickly gets you and up and running on Java in a matter of hours. The chapter on OOP is particularly great!

I use this for my comp sci students who want to learn more. It's a decent book for beginners but can be a challenging read for young students just learning. Very clearly written and a good book to have in the classroom as a resource.

I purchased this as a kindle download after reading a sample, everything I searched for I found but more importantly it was presented in an easy to read/understand way, unlike the textbook I tried to use. This compliments the videos I had been watching online

The maps are okay. A little too small for my eyesight, although the size of the book is convenient. Some of the chapters combine barrios, which has advantages and disadvantages. The bar/restaurant recommendations that we followed, which were only a few, usually turned out relatively well. They were essentially accurate and worth our time. The Argentinian words list was helpful. I was with someone from Buenos Aires who does not speak English, so she could not translate words when she used words particular to Argentina that I did not understand (I learnt Spanish in Guatemala and the Dominican Republic). So from that list I picked up some words that I would otherwise not have known. A different travel book that I got from my library had useful information about how Argentinians cook and order their steak, which is very good. They usually cook it "cocido," which literally means "cooked," and which is what North Americans would usually call medium (maybe just slightly past medium, in some instances). If you want rare or medium rare, you say "jugoso" or "a punto," respectively, and may have to convince your server. The information in this book about how many pesos per dollar is old. The black market rate was about 13.30 pesos per dollar when I was there (January 2015), while banks in the United States were offering me about 7.5 per dollar. But be careful about crime in Buenos Aires. I read recently it is the theft capital of Latin America. Some Argentinians don't trust banks and may sometimes carry around lots of cash. On the whole, I don't regret this purchase. But I'm not ecstatic with enthusiasm.

this book was just the perfect size to bring around while travelling! not very heavy, not very thick.paper quality was great.the street map and train map were very helpful!i'm really glad i bought this and brought it to my trip.we checked off a lot on the lists mainly because our online research showed generally the same must-visit places, anyway, so we ended up using this book as a constant reference.however, nothing will definitely replace just being in buenos aires and getting a better feel and enjoyment of the place, including places we definitely enjoyed exploring that were not in the book.there were places, too, that caught our attention and took pics of and later found out were in the book.the other minor lists (top argentinian wines, top cafes, etc) served very handy while walking around and had to do/buy something on the fly. or trying to figure out what to order in the restos.the top lists are not without faults, though. we agreed and disagreed to items listed in the lists but it's probably more personal preferences than anything.because most of what we saw in our online research on buenos aires and our actual discoveries while in buenos aires showed up in this book, i felt this book is 'legit." :-)in fact, i will definitely get their other top 10 books for other places.lastly, this is definitely worth buying just for the street map and train maps alone. it has maps in the book itself and has another handy, plastic foldable map u can easily put in your pocket that we constantly used. we had a gps loaded in one of our cell phones (and it helped!) but we ended up relying on these old printed maps more.

Great book!!! It had everything that I needed EXCEPT where to go to get the best deals on leather goods. I discovered after dropping $300 for a travel bag that 666 MurilloNear Palermo has 5 blocks of factories and that is the place to get real deals-NO HAGGLE!!! You get $500USD dollars bags for $30USD. It's the same place where all the shops on Florida buy their bags for cheap and mark the price up by 1000% in the tourist district. Other than that great book

Excellent Guide Book, very nicely organized around the "Top 10" Categories (Top 10 sights of Buenos Aires, Top 10 Shopping, Top 10 Restaurants, Top 10 Historical sights, etc.). The descriptions in the book reference the area on the included street map so it is easy to get around town.This book lead me to what was most important for me to see while in Buenos Aires - an Argentine Tango Show!!! Thanks to this book I found Piazzolla Tango - San Martin 170 // Florida 165 -, Buenos Aires, Argentina. My friends and I had an unforgettable evening - 30 minute Tango lesson, incredible steak dinner, all the wine we could drink, an incredible 2 hour music and dance exhibition, transportation from our hotel to the show and back - all for $68 US!!!!

Very convenient and easy to carry around. The included map that can be detached from the book and carried in one's pocket is very useful. Also the tips about places to see and things to do were very helpful. I bought two guidebooks and this was the only one I used for my weeklong trip to Buenos Aires.

Well, I got this book in plenty of time, but after studying it, I decided to leave it behind. I've been to Buenos Aires now, I've returned home, and I pulled this book out again to see if, having been there, it made more sense. Unfortunately, it doesn't, really. It's about the organization more than anything. Top 10 WHAT? is a question I still can't answer. I don't know why they called it Top 10. A lot of info in there, though. Just poorly organized, in my opinion.

As always Top 10 is in my Top 10 choices for guidebooks. Never disappoints! In the first read I was able to narrow in my choice neighborhood to stay in and start building an itinerary for a four day stay.

I'll be spending a week in Buenos Aires in the fall. I've been to BA several times, and was looking for a guide that would lead me to things worth seeing that aren't on the regular tourist tours. This guide lists the 10 best in a variety of categories. The maps that come with it will help me find my way by train, subway or on foot. Looking forward to using this guide on my trip!
