Wow! New read from Emma Prince isawesome. This the first book in the Enchanted Falls trilogy. Each book is written by a different author and I can’t wait for the next book. It is about three sisters on a vacation in Scotland. They all jump into an enchanted waterfall. Our first book begins when Caroline emerges from a loch in 1394 Scotland in the middle of a skirmish between rival clans. The other two sisters are gone. I couldn’t put this down, actually I didn’t want to. Thus begins Caroline’s and Laird Callums story. It is a wonderful story of love. family, magic and making hard choices. The characters are beautifully written and easy to love. I highly recommend this book and will wait impatiently for book two.

WOW!!! I just loved this book to where I couldn't put it down! I loved all the characters especially Caroline, full of spunk, energy and not afraid to get her hands dirty. I enjoy time travel, it's so much fun with all the twists and turns and Hot Highlander men meeting up with strong women from the future is truly entertaining. This was such an Awesome book I just Pre-Ordered the other two, even though I can't wait to read them because patience is not my virtue, but I can Pre-Order and will get them as soon as they're released. Happy Reading

This is quite the fun read!♡ I am a fan of historical romance and of course time travel Romance. This series is of three sisters and the books are written by other authors. It's about the sisters travel through time and learning to associate with the people in that time was also trying to find what happened to each sister and of course trying to figure out a way back home or stay with the hero.Being on vacation I finish this in one sitting and of course the second book as well of the series and I'm sitting here awaiting the next book in the series. But as I said this was quite the pleasure to read and I just couldn't wait to get ahold of the next one. some parts of the book had me blushing and swooning at the same time!Highly recommend if you are a fan of time travel Romance!

Loved this book!! The romance and suspense is unbelievable, the imagination and description of lands they traveled through were breath taking. I really enjoyed Scotland when I was there last. It is not like the past but still gorgeous with ruins and castles, keeps, villages and tales galore. I read as many Emma Prince book's as I can and have never been disappointed. Yummy sexy, men and women, suspenseful with emotional feelings being felt the entire length of the book. Can't wait to read Book 2 of the trilogy.

I normally only read highlander romances & scottish romance. I do not read time travel for some reason time travel seems too fakey. But, after saying that, this small time travel with lots of highland romance was a great read! I anxiously await the other two romances in this series and I am glad I gave this time travel a chance!

This is a great time travel romance without any of the usual macho stuff that can turn me off. It didn't involve any of the difficulties of the main characters hurting each other all through the story to finally get together at the end . The characters were likeable all the way through. Very enjoyable. If you like the idea of falling in love with a big dashing warrior , you will love it too. Can't wait to read the next book.

I have tried to white a review for this book but i can't without spoiling it for other readers that haven't read this gem yet. I don't usually read time travelling books. I am so glad I got this book. It had me enthralled from the beginning to the end. I can't wait to find out about Hannah and Ally. Get this book and read it. I promise you will not be disappointed.

Caroline Sutton, the youngest of three sisters, finds herself traveling to the 14th century after jumping from the enchanted falls. She is captured by Callum, a highland chieftain who believes she belongs to an enemy clan. After many misunderstandings, they fall madly in love. Caroline debated between following her heart and finding her sisters. She ended up marrying her highlander and he helps her reunite with one of her sisters. Great story!

The Yiddish Policemen's Union, by Michael Chabon

From Publishers Weekly

[Signature]Reviewed by Jess WalterThey are the "frozen Chosen," two million people living, dying and kvetching in Sitka, Alaska, the temporary homeland established for displaced World War II Jews in Chabon's ambitious and entertaining new novel. It is—deep breath now—a murder-mystery speculative-history Jewish-identity noir chess thriller, so perhaps it's no surprise that, in the back half of the book, the moving parts become unwieldy; Chabon is juggling narrative chainsaws here. The novel begins—the same way that Philip Roth launched The Plot Against America—with a fascinating historical footnote: what if, as Franklin Roosevelt proposed on the eve of World War II, a temporary Jewish settlement had been established on the Alaska panhandle? Roosevelt's plan went nowhere, but Chabon runs the idea into the present, back-loading his tale with a haunting history. Israel failed to get a foothold in the Middle East, and since the Sitka solution was only temporary, Alaskan Jews are about to lose their cold homeland. The book's timeless refrain: "It's a strange time to be a Jew."Into this world arrives Chabon's Chandler-ready hero, Meyer Landsman, a drunken rogue cop who wakes in a flophouse to find that one of his neighbors has been murdered. With his half-Tlingit, half-Jewish partner and his sexy-tough boss, who happens also to be his ex-wife, Landsman investigates a fascinating underworld of Orthodox black-hat gangs and crime-lord rabbis. Chabon's "Alyeska" is an act of fearless imagination, more evidence of the soaring talent of his previous genre-blender, the Pulitzer Prize–winning The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay.Eventually, however, Chabon's homage to noir feels heavy-handed, with too many scenes of snappy tough-guy banter and too much of the kind of elaborate thriller plotting that requires long explanations and offscreen conspiracies.Chabon can certainly write noir—or whatever else he wants; his recent Sherlock Holmes novel, The Final Solution, was lovely, even if the New York Times Book Review sniffed its surprise that the mystery novel would "appeal to the real writer." Should any other snobs mistake Chabon for anything less than a real writer, this book offers new evidence of his peerless storytelling and style. Characters have skin "as pale as a page of commentary" and rough voices "like an onion rolling in a bucket." It's a solid performance that would have been even better with a little more Yiddish and a little less police. (May)Jess Walter was a finalist for the 2006 National Book Award for The Zero and the winner of the 2006 Edgar Award for best novel for Citizen Vince. Does The Yiddish Policemen's Union live up to Michael Chabon's formidable reputation? There is no consensus: some critics called the novel the spiritual heir to the Pulitzer Prize?winning Adventures of Kavalier & Clay (2000); others thought it a disappointing aberration. As in Kavalier & Clay, Chabon explores issues of identity, assimilation, and mass culture, but he also pays homage to the noir detective novel—with mixed results. The New York Times called Landsman "one of the most appealing detective heroes to come along since Sam Spade or Philip Marlowe," while the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette felt that the work "came nowhere close to making the cut of a Raymond Chandler novel." Critics similarly disagreed about the writing, the convoluted plot, the symbolism of the Jewish-Native American conflict, and the controversial use of Yiddish slurs and caricatures. If not a glowing success, The Yiddish Policemen's Union nonetheless illustrates the rare talents and creativity of its author.Copyright © 2004 Phillips & Nelson Media, Inc.

I am reading the Nebula Award winning novels in chronological order. This is the winner for 2008.I must say, this book was very...different. Different in an interesting but sometimes difficult to read way. The novel is liberally embellished with Yiddish, the native language of the characters. There is a glossary in the back which I didn't notice until it was too late. I don't like looking things up anyway, plus the context makes most things obvious. The story is complex and the ridiculously long names for some of the characters don't make it any easier to keep track of things. There is a lot to follow. This is not a light read, you have to be paying attention. I would not recommend it for an audiobook. The two main characters are detectives in a province of Alaska to which they have been granted a 50 year lease. The main character, Landsman, life has gone down the tubes, his marriage collapsed leaving him with nothing to live for. He rents a dumpy apartment in a slum where he spends his non-working time drowning himself in alcohol. But he is a driven detective and when a young man is murdered in his apartment building, he takes it seriously. The book follows the complicated path to find the man's killer. What I really liked about the novel was the language, not the insertion of Yiddish, but the colorful and insightful aphorisms. So much can be conveyed in so few words. I'm going to put a number of them in this review so you can see what I mean. There are a lot, lot more throughout the novel. The lady has been in and out of the hospital lately, dying in chapters, with a cliff-hanger at the end of every one.The blood from the back of his head has scattered rhododendrons in the snow.He can feel his rib cage ringing under the mallet of his heart.Landsman feels a numbness enter his limbs, a sense of doom that is indistinguishable from peacefulness.I'm like a cash gift, I'm always appropriate.I could go on citing these things but you've probably got the idea by now.

I have a love-hate relationship with Michael Chabon. I loved The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. I hated Wonder Boys and this would be right in the middle. I would encourage anyone reading this to first have the understanding that this takes place in a fictional world where the Jews are given, for lack of a better description, an alternate Israel in Sitka Alaska. Since I did not, it took awhile for me to "get it"...about the time he mentions the A-Bomb that took out Berlin. So you better have the Glossary in the back of the book open, along with Google so that you can cut through the density of the narrative with it's heavy reliance on Jewish/Yiddish references. Maybe it is my deficiency that I do not want to have to cross-reference every third paragraph; however, I don't. The characters are well drawn and his descriptions of place and time are wonderfully evocative. The story, although overly convoluted for my taste, is well told. Maybe I should stick to Romance Novels?

I don't have time to review this properly, but I'm not the type who wants to read fiction taking place in an alternate history. However, this book was so imaginative and unusual that I ended up buying into Chabon's world in Alaska. Sorry there's no time for me to explain why. Just get through the first 50 pages and enjoy the ride. Chabon is so smart and funny that I couldn't help but consider my relative superficiality and stupidity.

Don't be put off by the unlikely hypothetical premise of a US - sanctioned Jewish shtetl in Sitka, Alaska -- Chabon could take any premise at all, regardless of how crazy, and do anything he wants with it so long as he keeps writing in his characteristic, highly evocative style that exactly places the reader in the moment right down to the components of a particular smell or color or thought or memory, or light or mood. He delivers his easy, almost free wheeling exactitude of description, with unparalleled and seemingly effortless turn of phrase, through multitudinous and constant allusion, delightfully concise and incisive by turns, nailing it, never letting the allusion get in the way, speeding by it, allowing it to spring forth as from a well rehearsed comedian, in consistently dense prose achingly and enviably to the point in stream of consciousness types of controlled leaps from this to that, precisely conveying in disarmingly simple words, a likeness between the object or emotion or taste at hand and things we know intimately, all with with shocking accuracy, constantly drawing a string of minute comparisons and likenesses in a made up world made undeniably palpable and familiar, a made up world especially for Jews, but so enjoyably particular and intimate in its description that in the end, his wild premise seems not so terribly unlikely. As for the plot, it's as wild as the notion of a remote Alaska Jewish shtetl set up by the state, and yet it moves along briskly enough, implausible --or not? -- as the outcome may be.Crazy enjoyable read, although it helps of you are Jewish or nearly Jewish by association owing to near constant cultural and actual Yiddish references (a lot of which, however, are self explanatory by context). All of this creates a feeling akin to an inside joke best understood by Jews, but again, the language is so beguiling to anyone enchanted by a well written turn of phrase, that it would be a shame for only Jared to read this and for non Jews to miss out. I encourage all linguaphiles, whatever their ethnic background, to dive in, maybe with a mini Yiddish reference dictionary on hand.

The overview of Lean, Agile, and Design Thinking methods was useful, but not quite enough for me. I especially wanted more from the section on Design Thinking as this area is the least familiar for me. In the end I expected more synthesis of these ideas and actionable strategies than I got.On the plus side, no pages were wasted and it is a quick and easy read.

Encountering such an ambitious title as "Lean vs. Agile vs. Design Thinking", I'll readily admit that I brought a bit of my own baggage with me when I started reading it. I've worked in variations of all three disciplines in several enterprises and continue to incorporate all three into my work as a consultant today. Like the author, I have some opinions formed both by scars and successes, and was eager to read his take on it and compare it with my own.The introduction of the book draws from one of Jeff's own consulting experiences to map Lean to Product Managers, Agile to Tech/Engineers, and Design Thinking to Designers, illustrating how even the correct practice of each can pull an overall body of work in different directions. This set off a bit of a red flag for me because when I held the title "Digital Product Manager", my job was to do Design Thinking (more so than Lean), to develop ever-so-valuable Customer Empathy into Agile Stories. However, the mapping of the roles to disciplines works well for the purposes of this book. When approaching a business book I think it's important to ask, "who is this written for?" - My takeaway is that it's for the individual manager, or influential stakeholder on a team, who is likely already "doing Agile" and may be invovled with, or wondering about, Lean and/or Design Thinking. It isn't going to help someone looking to get started fresh with one or more of these discilines as much as it will someone who is already in the thick of it. That said, there's a lot of wisdom presented that anyone starting out on a - what's the most current buzzword? - Digital Transformation Journey, would be wise to heed.As I started reading this book I imagined two directions it could go in, and I'll share the one that it didn't in case that's what you're looking for. The book does not try to define a process-driven approach of using the three disciplines and their component best practice methodologies with swim-lanes and flows that merge the inputs and outputs together and voila, great product and happy customers! This book takes an approach that will no doubt appeal to a broader audience: how does one synthesize the best things from the three disciplines and incorporate them into the workflow that can best be applied to their own practice?I really enjoyed the concise, easily consumable format of the book. The timing of reading it right before the 2017 holidays is perfect too. This is the perfect kind of book to share with your colleagues and use to spark discussion about how to make the change you want to see in how you approach your work. I'm going to place another order for several copies to give away to clients and team members that I know will benefit from Jeff's wisdom - and selfishly our collective working interactions will be improved. After all, that's the point of a good retrospective, right?

I think this would have an effective blog series. Its a good summary. I didn't check the small print and see that it was a 30 minute read. Nice overview of the disciplines but doesn't tackle the true nature of the problem aka. How to utilise all three in a complex and political organisation. Lots of pockets of these activities occurring but all it does is create more fragmentation. What is needed is a discipline that combines all 3 (4 in my opinion: Architecture) into a single and new discipline needed to support the future of business. Call it what you want, enterise design, stratops etc - its needed in the fast changing digital world, and currently the competing nature of some of these disciplines is a distraction. One other aspect missing that would make this work stronger is how the other disciplines of strategy and architecture could help with this space.

A refreshingly brief, no-nonsense, practical guide for leaders and practitioners who are struggling to implement new methodologies like lean, agile and design thinking. Gothelf cuts through the jargon and provides clear, concise descriptions of the main approaches and provides a path forward that blends and balances the best from each.

While this was helpful in explaining from a very high level the goals and trade offs of holding fast to one method over another, it didn't get very deep in explaining the individual methods. And while the application part was useful it probably would have been a more effective blog post somewhere. The whole book is less than 100 pages and probably 30% are illustrations or chapter dividers.

expected much more. This book offers rudimentary explanations of each method. Design thinking is encapsulated in less than one page! Absolute waste of money buying and time spent reading.

I have followed Jeff for a while and expected a in depth, empirical, conversation not an outline to that hoped for work. Oh well.

So many business books seem like a blog post blown out with fluff and a million repetitive examples. Jeff cuts through all that, conveys the essentials clearly, and lets you get back to work. The book clearly explains the origins, similarities, and key differences among the three frameworks, and in so doing makes it clear how they can work together. You'll still have to do the work to figure out how to apply these principles in your organization, but that's the point. There is no paint-by-numbers solution that will work for every business. I found it very clarifying.

Craig Childs does for archaeology what John McPhee does for geology. His earlier book, "House of Rain" explained the archaeology of the Southwest better than any other source I have found. Now "Atlas of a Lost World" does it for the earliest inhabitants of the western hemisphere. He relates a complex story in an entertaining and readable way. I regret not taking notes but I plan on reading the book again in a few months and will for sure take notes. It would have been helpful if the book had a time line for the numerous archaeological sites. Much of the earliest data are controversial and the author presents the pros and cons. A strong point of the book is the in depth discussion of megafauna. Trying to relive as much as possible what the early arrivals experienced, Childs visited many of the early sites from what is left of the Alaskan land bridge to the sinkholes of Florida. He also kayaked part of the coastal highway. In doing so he gain some insight into human behavior under truly frontier conditions. If I recall correctly he concluded the earliest arrivals were pretty much like ourselves. So what drove humans to do what they had to brave. Its seem genetics (D4 receptors) and perhaps a brain 5% larger that ours.

The professional archaeology community seems more willing than ever to question long-held theories about the peopling of the Americas, so Childs's book on Ice Age life comes at a great time. The book is loosely structured around a series of trips Childs's takes with various companions to important places in the field of prehistoric archaeology. He kayaks the Aucilla River in Florida, for example, where megafauna bones and stone tools have been uncovered. Interwoven among these trip narratives are distillations of past and current theories about Ice Age settlement, and interwoven among these summaries are Childs's musings and speculations about what life would have been like for people in Ice Age North America. While the time is ideal for a book about Ice Age archaeology, this is not the ideal book on the subject. The most engaging parts of the book are the author's approachable summaries and syntheses of research on the places he discusses. In these passages, I appreciate Childs's willingness to present potentially controversial ideas without committing to a particular theory. Parts of the book capture the scientific uncertainty about how the Americas were peopled and might open your mind to new possibilities. The problem is that the good bits noted above are crowded out by the book's less compelling components: trip details that frequently feel superfluous and speculations about ancient people that are conditioned by a vision of prehistoric America that feels antiquated. This latter vision is of adventurous hunters (probably male) penetrating a wide-open and virgin North America. It's a vision that's appealing for readers stuck in our technologized and McDonaldized 21st-century America, but I think the focus on the act of hunting megafauna can obscure other aspects of Ice Age people. The book's fondness for the hunters is manifested in its focus on projectile points (or alleged projectile points) and other edged tools. This is natural since stone survives better than other materials used by prehistoric people, but there are a few freak survivals of other artifacts to at least form kernels for discussion (what about the 10,000-year-old sagebrush bark shoes found in Nevada, for example? What about linguistic evidence, which is only touched on lightly here?). I also think it would have also been fair—given the relative lack of material evidence about Ice Age people—to talk more about early archaic archaeology (very old, but not in the Ice Age proper) to speculate about the preceding period. There's a lot more to know about Ice Age people than how and what they hunted. What did they wear? Could they weave? How did they carry their possessions? Did they have dogs? Childs is limited by a very slim archaeological record, but a revised vision of Ice Age North Americans might aid in excavating more from what little material remains.

This book is little more than a travelogue with the author telling of his visits to a number of sites in North America bearing significant archaeological evidence left by the first humans in the Western Hemisphere. In super-florid language, he relates his attempts to imagine the lives these people lived and on one adventure he imagines himself a mammoth while being hunted by his trip mates. He generally does a good job of describing the archaeology of where he visits but the book is in no way comprehensive and its title’s use of the word Atlas misleads the would-be reader. There are a few sketchy maps in the text that are of little use with the one of the “Braided Yukon River as it crosses the Arctic Circle” hard to make out and little resembles the area as shown on USGS maps. The front and rear endpapers are identical maps showing the locations of significant ice age finds but they don’t show all sites mentioned in the text: Upward Sun in Alaska and Clovis and Folsom in New Mexico. The author credits a number of individuals who helped in the production of this book. Someone should have caught, among other examples, that ground rising above water in a marshland, referred to a number of times when describing kayaking in the Aucilla River region in Florida, is a hummock and not a hammock. The author teaches writing and is not an archeologist. I was very disappointed in this book and advise anyone to look inside before buying.

This was a great, accessible and personal glimpse into reconstructing the lives of ice age travelers. Childs has a wonderful narrative voice, and treats his subject with a passion often lacking in archeological reporting. I look forward to reading his other books. As an aside, I had the privilege of hearing Childs speak at Prescott College in Arizona. I could hear his voice in his pages.

A lyrical trek across the late Pleistocene/early Neocene landscape and the peopling of North America. I think school age children would especially benefit from reading a book like this -- if only they can be pried away from their smart devices and computer games. The author has that rare talent among writers of being able to take the reader to a very distant and alien place and time -- as if you are seeing and experiencing those same sights and sensations with him.

I was on calibre press (cop website) one night reading an article on how to obtain confessions when the article writer, Jim Glennon, suggested I buy his book. My immediate thought was, what kind of guy does he think I am? of course, I am not going to buy your book that you endorsed. As I contemplated my professional career and how to better it, I decided well for $10; I supposed I could give it a shot. I was extremely surprised by the book. Lr. Glennon knows what he is talking about and has been able to formulate it into a book to better my policing skills. It is a book for police by a retired police officer. I have learned something a lot of younger officers do not believe, and that is the job does not change, the equipment we use, the technology, the science, it may advance and improve, but the job is the same. People are the same, and arresting communication is the same. Lt. Glennon brings a lot of experience and knowledge to the table in this book, both formally and informally. He is an educated man who has furthered his formal education in the field of communication, and he has 30 years experience in investigative law enforcement work. I was quite pleased with the book and will suggest it to my colleagues. It is a short book and an easy read. It is a book by a cop for cops. Buy this book and help realized and understand things you already know and don't understand and learn a lot of new stuff along the way. Lt. Glennon will educate you with various reals stories that if you have worked a day in law enforcement, you know he isn't making this stuff up. Buy it today!

I got this book after I attended a Calibre Pess seminar (The Ultimate Training Officer). This is a must read for any police officer. All new officers I train will be reading it. This book may save your life some day. It helps you understand and trust when you get that bad feeling but can’t specifically say why you’re feeling that way. Just get the book and you’ll be happy you did.

One of the best Law Enforcement Books, I've read. As a current FTO (Field Training Officer) for my department, I have recommended this book to all my past trainees. I find Jim Glennon's lessons not only applicable out on the streets but also the way law enforcement professionals should carry out their duties, when servicing their citizens. This book is an absolute must read, if you are a patrol officer or assigned to a special unit where obtaining a confession will strengthen your case. In our profession it is very important to not only master the current laws but also the method in which we communicate with the public and interact with suspects. Not only does Glennon discuss the importance of communication but also what human behavioral signs to pay attention to when dealing with suspect's, who may be plotting an attack or flight. Outstanding read!

After 25 years on the road I can still learn how to deal with the emotional extremes of the suspects I encounter. This book is more useful to new officers who are at the beginning of the learning curve. Save yourself the hassles of citizens complaints, and fights you can avoid, by communicating better. Your department won't give you the training so learn on your own. This book was well written and researched. It's much better than listening to a sergeant, with no road experience, tell you how you should have handled the contact

This book is a very slow read. The book might as well be all about the author. I can’t tell where the forward ends and the book actually begins. This is not a great book

Fast paced, informative and interesting writing. I would have given it five stars if it had delved a bit deeper into application of the techniques and insights to build on the lessons given. By the end of the book I wanted more of that. Overall definitely worth the time to study and read.

I am a retired police office and now an instructor at an academy. This book is excellent reading for new officers starting out and a great refresher for vetrans.

Really enjoyed reading this book. Being an effective communicator in LE is key to not only dealing with criminals, but also the customer service side of the job. I have already noticed a positive change during my shifts by applying the principles in this book. Highly recommend this book!

Vatican I by O'Malley is a short but superbly written summary of the issue of Papal Infallibility and Vatican I in 1870. The author is a well known Jesuit, and one will see the influence and pervasiveness of the Jesuits throughout. This book does not seem to be a polemic for one side or the other on first reading. It does show how some limitations on the proposed position of Pius IX was attained, namely that he wanted unlimited infallibility and the best the Council could delimit is infallibility on matters stated ex cathedra, namely limited to things the Pope would pronounce as coming from the successor of Peter. The book is divided into five sections and a conclusion. The author goes back and forth between the issues at the time and those proximate to the Council and integrates them into the decision process. The issues driving Pius IX were the development of nationalism, liberalism, freedom of religion, Protestantism, freedom of the press, and the development of citizens as compared to subjects. Pius IX was one of the last hold outs of the days of divine rights of rulers. As forms of democracy were developing, challenges from socialism and communism were being addressed, Pius IX saw a need to strengthen the papacy. The author does a reasonably good task at showing the counter efforts such as Gallicanism which was the French approach of running the Church the way the French wanted to. Strangely Gallicanism was present before the Avignon papacy and was intensified during the 14th century when the Pope was in Avignon. Although not officially part of France at the time the popes then followed the French crown in many ways. Pius IX saw this as an anathema. Thus any extension to the 19th century would have to be wiped out and Pius did this via his call for infallibility.Even more compelling was the fact that when all of the issues started with Pius he was also a head of state with his dominion over the Papal States, the central lands of what was becoming Italy. The Pope owned and controlled most of central Italy and as nationalism was evolving his control was under attack. Eventually just months after the Council declared his infallibility Rome was invaded and taken over by the Italian nationalists, thus Italy was effectively formed as a nation. The author blends these facts in a well presented narrative. He also brings to the fore the opposition of many of the theologians, often non-clerical and German, who opposed this infallibility dicta. Key amongst them would be Dollinger, a Bavarian theologian strongly opposed to this new idea. In fact many of the best theologians were opposed since there was no basis and furthermore the Conciliar theories dominated, namely such decisions were made by Church Councils, bishops in concert, and not singularly by a Pope.Overall the books is superb. However one can raise a few issues:1. The Jesuits played a key role in supporting Pius. The author's document is replete with references and the author himself is a Jesuit. The rule of the Jesuits frankly should have been more detailed, for their role was to support the Pope and as such infallibility would logically strengthen their positions, somewhat.2. Infallibility took almost two millennia to be stated. As such one would wonder why no one ever thought of this before? The Councils were always a way to reach doctrinal decisions. But now one ascribes such a singular power to a singular man. This is certainly questionable give the cast of characters who have occupied the seat of Peter over the ages.3. As with many such efforts one should be drawn back to the 14th century and the battles between John XXII and Marsilius of Padua and William of Ockham. Ockham went as far in his Work of Ninety Days to claim John a heretic. His contention has merit. Marsilius predated Montesquieu in the ideas of representative governments and the fact that divine rights had no basis. The 14th century players frankly should be mentioned in many of these discussions.Overall O'Malley provides a timely, well written, and balanced presentation of Vatican I, a Council whose closure never occurred due to the capture of Rome by the Italian forces. O'Malley in the conclusion makes reference to the impact of this dictum, such as the problems Kennedy had running for President, for the dictum was interpreted as making Catholics citizens of a foreign lord and master and demanded fealty to their assertions.

An absolute tour de force! There have been hatchet jobs attacking Vatican I by those who wish to denigrate Papal Primacy and Infallibility such as the works of Hasler and Kung. Fr. O'Malley masterfully demonstrates what really happened and makes it clear that God was able to use the factions in the Catholic Church in the 19th Century to demonstrate the legitimacy of papal authority both theologically and juridically while allowing for some leeway which Vatican II was able to use to explain the collegial role of the bishops and their responsibility for the for both the local and universal church. I cannot recommend this book more highly! Anyone interested in the real story of Vatican I needs to read this book.

A thorough examination of Vatican I. Very well done. Does religious liberty extend to terroristic Muslims? It would be helpful if a document defining what constitutes faith and morals involves and can it be expanded to include all human action?

I started with this story as a precursor to wanting to read O’malley’s history of Vatican II. Although the book details much about a period, and a cast of characters, with whom I am only dimly familiar, the book is worth every moment of concentration a reader can muster. Also, it is a critical building block to understanding his Vatican II book. Typical of my expectations of a quality Jesuit author, O’Malley is thorough, balanced, nuanced, but sufficiently pointed and unabashed in his observations about the clerics and their ambitions that were a reflection of the times. The church, and its players, are humans embedded in their present and trying to make sense of their past— and O’Malley helps our understanding of that challenge.

wonderful history. Well written.

Father O’Malley has written a most readable story of the short lived Vatican 1.

Excellent presentation.

So much of the faith of Catholics is bound up in their thoughts about the papacy that it’s hard to believe that infallibility wasn’t formally defined until 1870 at Vatican I. What they call an “ultramontane” church dominated by the pope has developed since then. Prior to that major decisions were more often made by councils of bishops. This book explains how all of that came to be.
