Paul A. Offit, MD, is the chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases and the director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. A professor of vaccinology and pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and the author of several books, he lives in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania.

The author makes a reasoned, well supported case for vaccines based on the science. An excellent debunking of, and history of, the anti-vaccine movement. As a physician myself, it always amazes me that people are so ready to accept the opinion of non-experts like Dr Sears or (seriously) Jenny McCarthy as altruistic gospel, yet discount the efforts of people, companies, doctors, and agencies who dedicate a large part of their lives to preventing disease, as motivated by callous greed.
This book is filled with misinformation. Vaccines shed. Pharmaceutical companies are not held liable for vaccine injuries (1986 Act). The govt. pays millions for injuries. VAERS keeps records of millions of vaccine injuries. Where there is a risk we must have a choice. We will reach a tipping point. The truth cannot be suppressed forever. Justice will prevail.
I wanted to share my review because I picked up "Deadly Choices" in 2013 after my first daughter was born. I was concerned about vaccine safety and wanted to feel confident that I was making the best choice for her health. But, having a small child - I didn't have time to read it, and it sat on my shelf. I chose to delay vaccinating my daughter and time passed.On facebook and social media I would see these fear-mongering posts from friends both in support of and against vaccinating kids. I felt brow beaten and like people were making fun of me for being concerned about my child's well being. "Sure" I thought, "the risk of permanent damage may be small, but if it's MY child, it doesn't matter how small the risk is - I want to avoid it!" Still, this book sat on my shelf.Originally, I had planned to re-evaulate vaccinating when my daughter turn two. By then, if she was going to develop a neurological disorder on her own, she would have developed it and I wouldn't have to wonder if it had been caused by vaccination. But I was pregnant with my second child and didn't have time. Now she's 3 and I have a 9 month old crawling around. But, every time they got the sniffles or a fever, I would have this sinking worry "Is it measles? whooping cough? Should I risk taking her to the pediatrician and infecting other kids?" Then looking down the road - "would I rather home school my daughter than vaccinate?"Finally, last week, I brushed the dust off this book and decided to read it.. Given the warning on the book's cover, I was afraid that it was going to be full of vitriol, that I would be yelled at from the pages of "Deadly Choices" for my concern. Instead, I found a compassionate and clear headed explanation of the facts. I feel like Dr. Offit understood and appreciated my concern as a parent wanting to make the right choice for my daughters.Dr. Offit explains the science and not science in a way that puts the information in context and helps you make a truly informed decision about vaccinating your kids. I think that there is a lot of misinformation and fear out there, and I think that this book helps correct a lot of it. If you're willing to read Dr. Sears or other vaccine books, you should read this one too, before you delay vaccinating and risk your kids getting sick.
Of course this book is pro vaccine... it was written by someone who helped invent/ holds a patent on the rotavirus vaccine (which causes intussusception... which if you don’t know, means your bowel pretty much folds in half).I wouldn’t listen to anything this vaccine Nazi says. Taking advice from him is like asking a thief if it’s ok to steal.

This book is not technical and is a narrative of past and present forms of the antivax movement. An engaging read but covers too many topics and people with minimal detail to keep the average aadd reader from straying. Worth reading as an introductory for the topic, for the layman or even just a curiosity but will leave the knowledgeable wanting.
This was a really comprehensive analysis of vaccines. As a mom, I have trusted pediatricians and other providers and experts that vaccines are safe for my children. However, I can't say that some of claims the anti-vaccine movement haven't made me a little nervous, and people like Bill Maher and Jenny McCarthy are often the loudest voices in the media. I felt like this was a "the rest of the story" book, carefully explaining the evidence clearly and scientifically. I have 5 fully vaccinated children who have never had a reaction to vaccines and are in perfect health and it makes me so happy I trusted my gut and the experts with my choice, even with louder voices in my ear.
