A must have for new and intermediate colorists! I love how you get to practice the lessons right in the book!
This is a great book if you want to learn how to take your coloring to the next step. My finished products were just okay, but now, after reading this book and applying the many easy tips and instructions, my coloring has improved greatly. I am sure that my coloring art will be worth framing in the future if I keep it up! Very informative and covers every subject there is on coloring. Easy to understand and to follow directions. It is also a bit of a coloring book in itself because it has many coloring pages for you to practice your techniques. One thing you should realize is that to color beautifully - it takes time. It now takes me 2 and sometimes 3 times longer to color something than it used to because I am applying what I learned in the book, but the final result is definitely worth it and this book is worth every penny and so is the time it takes to read it (easily in just a few short hours). I highly recommend this book to all because it has great links too for those of you that already know what you're doing. I've attached some examples of my work but I have already got better!
Wonderful how to book for coloring enthusiasts! Provides a great deal of tips, explains a number of things - such as color wheels, warm and cool colors, etc., that the average colorist probably doesn't know. Even better, once something is explained, there are exercises to practice what you have just learned! I have learned a great deal from this book, and highly recommend it to any one who is looking to improve their coloring skills.
This is a very well organized guide for anyone new to colored pencils. It is well illustrated and fairly comprehensive in topics covered. There are drawings on many of the pages where you can practice the technique being discussed without having to flip back and forth in the book. There are 9 perforated pages in the back of the book (printed double sided) with full size drawings by various artists. There is also a convenient index at the end for quick reference to the techniques described.The paper is a very good quality. It's not equivalent to Enchanted Forest or Summer Nights but is thicker than the Creative Haven type books--not knocking Creative Haven books as I have several that I enjoy working in--just explaining about the paper in this book.The experienced colorist will probably not find very many new ideas or techniques to try, but I wish I had something like this when I bought my first coloring book--can we say totally clueless? I highly recommend this book to anyone who is beginning their journey into the highly addicting coloring book hobby, or to anyone wanting to try expand their reportoire of techniques.
If you are just beginning in coloring, this is a MUST HAVE. If you have quite a bit of experience, this book is a great reference.I must say that the previous reviewer was so disappointed over lack of content. I must disagree with her on that point. Considerable time is given to b!ending, shading, various media. I have a rather larger collection of books, and they're is not a single book that covers all of the topics that she listed. Might I suggest that if you want to learn how to color water droplets, for example, there are numerous wonderful videos on Utube. I belong to a fantastic Facebook group that is about gray scale coloring and they publish loads of videos on these topics. I keep telling them that a a book would be nice, but in the mean time, taking advantage of the videos!Now that I am back on topic, this book is a wonderful look at coloring over all. It tells about the numerous types of media that are available and all of their plus's and minus's. (Forgive my terrible spelling).
This book ended up being a little more remedial than I was looking for. That isn't necessarily a *bad* thing (and, for some people, that might be exactly what they are looking for!) but it is worth considering, first.The beginning of this is a pretty large section that takes a fairly in-depth look at the various different types of coloring medias available (colored pencils, markers, pens, etc.), and even compares different subtypes of certain media (e.g., wax-based colored pencils vs. oil-based colored pencils).This book will really be the most beneficial for people who are still on the edge of this hobby—people who are either looking to take it up or those who have just started—and it will be less beneficial to those who have already been dabbling with coloring for a while.There is still plenty good information in there for people who have already chosen their media and are already familiar with much of the basic coloring techniques, just not as much as there would be otherwise.So, would I recommend this? If you are somebody who is still on the edge (either looking to begin or have started very recently), and are somebody who does not have much familiarity or experience with art, then: yes, absolutely!But would I recommend this if you have already been coloring for awhile, understand basic color theory and techniques like shading and blending? Probably not. Instead, I think you're most likely going to benefit far more from something like Colorist's Special Effects - color interior: Step by step guides to making your adult coloring pages POP!, which also covers many of the same topics (though not quite as extensively) but focuses a lot more on techniques for coloring a wide variety of objects and scenes with interesting effects and beautiful shading.In the end, I am a bit conflicted on how to rate this: ultimately, for what I was looking for, I would probably only give this a 3-star rating; I wasn't really looking for something that covered the fundamentals as in-depth as this does, but there was still some useful information and ideas that I picked up from it, despite that. On the other hand, if I had read this just before (or shortly after) starting, I probably would have found this to be perfect and worthy of 5 stars... so I guess I'll compromise and give it 4-stars. GREAT for beginners but probably a bit too much like Remedial Coloring for those who already have experience but are looking to improve their skills.
