This book is stuffed full of basic protocol and/or techniques for what seems like basically every basic technique you might encounter in an analytical chemistry lab. It also describes various principles, mathematics, and other concepts you might come across in relatively uncomplicated language. It also includes practice problems, which is excellent. There are also sections that I would almost categorize as "tips 'n tricks" to make your overall technique better, such as proper weighing or how to use various volumetric glassware. The thing that I appreciate most about this book is that it doesn't require particularly advanced knowledge to make use of the information (although a basic knowledge of chemistry and the subject you are looking up definitely helps a lot). It's practical and accessible, which is exactly what I want in a reference book for a situation where one doesn't really need to know enough details to deliver a thesis, but enough to get the job done. It's also very useful as a refresher--like a situation where "I know I've done this before, but that was x years ago".

This book is definitely not as technical as I would have hoped. It's not useful at all to me.

Better than expected! Great guide for an analytical lab.

It helped me understand chemistry processes and made my lab easy

Pretty great compared to what my school was charging ! Used , but looks band new.

Book was brand new and got here in the right amount of time. Thank You!

Worth it, very useful.

I’ve owned several Moosewood Collective cookbooks over the years. They really helped bring “vegetarian” food into a more “fine dining” universe with interesting and creative recipes. Many of their earlier books are full of recipes that are complex creations with long lists of ingredients that can take hours to prepare. Most home cooks aren’t really interested in spending hours in the kitchen — heck, many of us don’t HAVE hours to spend in the kitchen. So I was intrigued to see a cookbook specifically designed as “Fresh Ideas for the Weeknight Table.” OK … let’s see what this means.Overall, I really like this fresh take on the Moosewood tradition of fresh and natural foods. Reading through the book, I’m finding a number of recipes that I will make — recipes featuring produce that I can find locally with interesting and creative flavor combinations. Nothing too fussy or complicated, either — just good fairly simple flavor combinations that work.My usual practice is to prepare 3 recipes from each cookbook I review, and I followed that practice here. My three recipes:Greek Frittata:I reduced this recipe by half to make one largish serving, and added a small side salad with feta and olives. This is a really basic, but tasty!, frittata of spinach, oregano, tomato, garlic/scallions, and feta cheese. The tomatoes and cheese are added near the end of cooking sot hat they’re warmed and the cheese melted. I liked this a lot — took only about 15 minutes total cook time (prep adds maybe another 5-10 minutes), so it’s really fast to put together. Basic, yes, but certainly tasty. Will make again.Moroccan Spiced Fish:I decided to use some local salmon for this, and followed the suggestion of letting the fish marinate in the spice mix/garlic/cilantro/oil/lemon juice mixture for a couple of hours. The recipe for the Moroccan Spice Mix is included in the book, and can be used on veggies, meat, etc. It’s a tasty combination of cumin, ginger or cinnamon (I used both), paprika, turmeric, pepper and salt). After seasoning with the mixture, the fish is simply baked at 350 degrees F for 10-15 minutes. Once baked, you can eat it as is as a main dish, stuff it into a pita, make fish tacos, or add it to a stew. Versatile and VERY tasty. I’ll make this again, and I’ll be using the spice mix in other dishes as well. Good stuff!Riesling Roasted Pears:I just got a bunch of fresh pears in this week’s CSA (Consumer Supported Agriculture) basket. I had 4 lovely bosc pears, so I reduced the recipe by half (it calls for 8 pears). I also had some Moscato wine in the fridge — the recipe calls for Riesling “or other sweet white wine” — so perfect! You make a sauce with the wine, zest & juice of lemon and orange, peppercorns, cinnamon stick, sugar, and whole cloves, then pour it over the pears sitting upright in a baking dish. Bake for awhile in a 375 degree oven, basting occasionally with the sauce, until pears are softish. Oh my — this is REALLY good. Really REALLY good. Definitely will make this again — it’s so easy and tastes much “fancier” than it would seem just from reading the recipe. So there it is — lots of good possibilities here for using local fresh ingredients. Really nice addition to my cookbook collection -- solid 4 stars: I like it!

I love Moosewood Cookbooks. If you are ever in the Ithaca, NY area, you must stop by their restaurant...delicious. This particular cookbook is perfect for anyone wanting to know how to cook simple, everyday vegan meals. You don't have to be an experienced chef to follow along. The recipes are also easily adjusted for meat lovers. You can't go wrong with this cookbook.

Really, really good ideas. When I first started cooking, Molly Katzen had authored the original Moosewood cookbook. Had many a good meal from that book. I have some of the other books, but the original is still my favorite. Now this book I would say is just as good, and I will definitely try some of these recipes!

I have been a fan of the original Moosewood Cookbook ever since my college days in the early 1980's. However, I had fallen away from that due to my long hours at work, and then added my 2 children, my nonvegetarian husband, and even longer hours at work. It is refreshing to have a vegetarian cookbook focused on practical meals in our multi-tasking, overcommitted lives. A drawback is my husband's love of meat dishes, but he will tolerate interspersed vegetarian meals (as long as they are delicious).

I have three Moosewood cookbooks. The first two have some of my favorite recipes, I make over and over again. This one, I just got and am marking recipes to make. The recipes are amazing. Granted, I don't like the taste of meat, so their vegetarian recipes are beautiful. I can get carnivores to eat these foods. One day I hope to go to their restaurant and try their foods made by the authors of my cookbook.

This is actually a practical cookbook, and everything I've tried from it has been delicious. The Oven Roasted Ratatouille in particular was outstanding, and took very little effort. There are plenty of pictures, the recipes are indeed simple, but very creative, and the prep times given are realistic. There aren't many weird ingredients, and thumbing through this book is inspiring. There are a lot of tofu recipes. We're a tofu-free family, but the photographs have almost convinced me to give it a try.

This is exactly what it says: Simple suppers. Tasty meals. I'm partial to soups and this one makes it all so simple that I actually remember how to make them without looking up in the book. Mushroom miso and the avgolemono are staples. It is a bridal shower gift as well.A Good Thing, to quote Ms. Stewart.

I just looked through the recipes and they look yummy. All appeared to be simple and many of them can be made with ingredients in my pantry. I particularly liked the suggestions to modify the recipes. This weekend I made the Pasta with Blue Cheese and Carmelized Onions. Loved it. Next time I may crumble walnuts on top.

Neither my husband nor I am vegetarians, but we wanted to cut down on meat costs. I checked this out at our library first to see if we would like it. Almost all of the recipes have common ingredients, and if they do call for something harder to find, it suggests a substitute. That is the first thing I liked about this vegetarian cookbook; others I had looked through called for really random, obscure ingredients I didn't want to hunt down. The recipes we have tried have been very tasty, relatively quick to make, don't call for a ton of ingredients, and they are simple to prepare. I liked this cookbook so much I decided to buy it.

Louise Erdrich is a national treasure. That's my considered opinion. Every book of hers that I've read has shone with the light of a transparent power, a use of language that is deceptively plain but rich and transformative. Like her Native American ancestors, it seems that she has taken from the anglo culture and language that which she can use, but she has retained the best parts of her heritage that help her to make sense of those things and to keep them from overpowering the sensibilities of the unique society from which she came. She does it all again in LaRose, her latest novel.LaRose is the third book in a sort of loose trilogy that started with The Plague of Doves, continued with The Round House and now reaches (perhaps) a conclusion with this book. Or perhaps there will be more books set in this community of the Indian reservation, a place where different characters and their ancestors recur and where the past seems a part of the present. As Faulkner said, "The past is never dead. It is not even past." It was true in Faulkner's books and it is true in Erdrich's books, as well. The title character of this current book is a young boy, five years old when we meet him, who is descended from generations of female LaRoses. He is the fifth in a line of LaRoses in his family and, in time, we meet them all. Soon after the beginning of the story, we go back to 1839 and the first LaRose, who was sold to a white man who raped her. Ultimately, she played a part in his murder, and she achieved a happier future, finding love, romance, marriage, and family. But she also suffered for many years with tuberculosis and when she died in the care of white scientists, those scientists stole her bones and put them on display. Generations of her family fought to have those bones returned to her community. But back to the fifth LaRose, who is five years old in 1999 when fears of Y2K - remember that? - were abroad in the land.LaRose's father goes hunting one day and finds the buck that he wishes to kill to feed his family. He sights the animal with his rifle, but as he pulls the trigger, there is a blur between him and the deer and the deer runs away. He has hit something but it wasn't the buck. To his horror, he finds that he has shot a child. It is Dusty, the five-year-old son of his best friend and neighbor and the playmate of his son, LaRose.LaRose's father is a home health aide, a beloved and respected member of his community, but the question which the book asks is, can a person do the worst thing possible and still be loved? This man has done the worst thing possible in killing an innocent child. Can his community forgive him or will he be ostracized? He searches for a way to make atonement and finds a possible answer in the traditions of his people. He convinces his wife that they must give their own son to the parents of the dead child as a replacement for that child. (Erdrich notes in her postscript that such transfers did occasionally happen.)The transfer is made and LaRose becomes a kind of ambassador between the two families, working to alleviate the suffering of both. He has the gift of healing and of seeing into the world where the spirits of the dead dwell, and the act of sharing this special child sets in motion a chain of events that will, in the end, transform the lives of all it touches. In her last book, The Round House, we saw the workings of revenge/justice. In LaRose, Erdrich explores the other side of that coin - forgiveness. She answers the question of whether a person can still be loved after doing the worst thing possible with a resounding "Yes!"There are so many rich and wonderful characters in this book. I cannot even attempt to mention them all here, but Erdrich's writing makes splendid use of all those multiple voices in telling this story. We get to know each of them and to respect them as individuals and as part of a larger community that values and cares for them, even the ones with messed up lives, usually ruined by drugs and/or alcohol.Erdrich brings us her unique perspective of a culture which the larger American society has sought in its worst moments to annihilate. She shows us that that culture is still standing, still nurturing its people, and that we are all richer for it.

The first chapter of LaROSE is one of the most arresting, perfectly crafted opening chapters I have encountered in a long time. It is 1999. Landreaux Iron, an Ojibwe Indian living on a reservation in North Dakota, goes hunting for a buck he had been tracking all summer. He finds it where the reservation abuts a cornfield of Peter Ravich, his neighbor and his best friend. "Landreaux took the shot with fluid confidence." But someone, somehow -- horribly -- intervened. Between Landreaux and the buck was Peter Ravich's six-year-old son Dusty, perched in a tree, also looking at the buck. The bullet struck and killed him. The Ravich family is devastated. Peter is on the brink of killing Landreaux, even though they are best friends; Nola, Dusty's mother, emotionally fragile to begin with, becomes suicidal. Although the police investigation exonerates Landreaux, he is racked by guilt; his wife Emmaline, who is Nola Ravich's half-sister, is also torn up. To address their grief and as a gesture of compensation, they give their youngest son, LaRose (who had been Dusty's frequent playmate) to the Raviches to replace Dusty. The novel then tracks the Iron and Ravich families over the next four years, as they try to adjust to and live with the horrendous event. Over time, they end up sharing LaRose, who turns out to be preternaturally good, mature, and understanding. Much of the novel is devoted to the teenage daughters of the two families -- Snow and Josette Iron and Maggie Ravich. They become a tight trio playing on the reservation high school volleyball team, and their adolescent hijinks and sparkling repartee frequently warm the heart or evoke a smile. The story includes other characters from the reservation, two of whom assume major roles: Father Travis Wozniak, an ex-Marine and survivor of the 1983 Marine barracks bombing in Beirut, who operates as a strict but compassionate moral conscience, but then becomes plagued by a love for Emmaline Iron; and Romeo Puyat, a scrawny, weasely Indian and bottom-feeder, who has a long-standing grievance against Landreaux Iron for which he plots vengeance, even though Landreaux and Emmaline took in and raised his son Hollis, after the mother deserted Romeo.Along the way, the reader is provided what I assume to be an excellent picture of contemporary (circa 2000) life on an Ojibwe reservation in North Dakota: A mélange of modern American life and traditional practices. Many adults working odd jobs to make ends meet. Some adults drug- or alcohol-addled. Much abuse of opiates and prescription painkillers. Diabetes. Yet a functioning community. That community is marvelously brought together and portrayed in the novel's closing chapter. The event is a high-school graduation party for Hollis Landreaux, who is then going into the National Guard. "[T]he yard around the house was crowded with people talking, filling plates with food, laughing, like, well, a bunch of Indians. So many people were eating that all the chairs were taken, then the back steps, the front steps. Towels were laid on top of the cars so girls wouldn't stain their flouncy skirts with car dirt. People stood talking with plates of food in their hands, eating and eating because the food was top-shelf."The boy LaRose is the fifth LaRose in Emmaline's family, stretching back a century. Interwoven throughout the novel is a thread of the story of those LaRoses. Most of it involves the very first LaRose, an Indian girl so named by the white trader who saved her from a life of sexual degradation and eventually married her. Thus, the novel LaROSE also tells a more historical story of Native Americans, in which tuberculosis and boarding schools are especial scourges. This is the fourth book that I have read by Louise Erdrich. She is a creative storyteller and a powerful writer, who at times seems to reach the primeval. Over the years she has continuously refined her craft. LaROSE, while very good, is not perfect: although it is not overwhelming, there is too much magical realism, too much of the supernatural for my taste, and the characters of LaRose and his sisters Snow and Josette are too goody-goody. (The girl Maggie, on the other hand, is delightfully complex.) But these are small quibbles. LaROSE is a novel well worth reading, and it should prove memorable in its demonstration that "Sorrow eats time" and "Time eats sorrow."

This story begins with a tragedy that throws two families into turmoil and pain. The father of one family accidentally kills the son of his closest friend who is married to his sister-in-law. He is devastated and after much soul searching with his wife, they decide to give the family of the child who died their youngest son who was the dead boy's playmate. They are of the indigenous people, and think of this as following the old ways. The story follows these families journeys through this strange process, noting their histories and personal flaws. What was interesting to me was the children of the families become the fabric and glue who end up protecting the adults from themselves. They are able to be stronger and capable and in the process, they bring the adults back to a reasonable facsimile of sanity. While the adults flounder and struggle with their demons, the children work through their problems and triumphs by sticking together with love, unity and respect. I have always loved watching children negotiate the world, using their natural talents to sort through the intricacies of human relationships. I recommend this book. Me Erdrich has won my admiration and respect for a tale well told once again.
