Love the idea of "baking" one big cookie in a pan - especially in summer when I don't want to turn on my oven. Every recipe in this book is basically the same, just the add-ins change. My first attempt at the basic recipe (with some choc chips added in) was disappointingly flavorless. First, vanilla and salt are missing from the recipe. Then I looked at a standard cookie recipe and there's much more butter, proportionately -- which would also affect the flavor. Maybe you could halve any cookie recipe and just bake it in a 10" pan on the stovetop? I don't know but will experiment. Glad I didn't spend much on this book. It might be worth it just for the ideas for add-in and topping variations.

At first, the death is discounted a suicide, but is soon determined to be murder. And there's no shortage of suspects. Lou and her new partner, Colin, dig deep into the victim's life to find her murderer. But Lou is also looking for her sister's murderer.One of the strengths of the book are the characters and the setting. Howzell Hall writes with largely an African-American cast and she knows the ins-and-outs of the society she's portraying. No one's all good...or all bad. Her characters are nuanced and all are interesting. She brings a bit of Lou's private life into the story; along with her missing sister, Lou also has a less-than-faithful husband.Howzell Hall's first book is told in the first person, with additional parts told from the third. It's a good story - the characters are fairly complex - but the plot suffers a bit from what I think is a first-timer's gambit in writing - the "damsel in distress". See, the murderer is also after Lou. All gets solved in the end, and Elouise Norton goes on to further books in the series. And I'm going along with her

This book was quite a pleasant surprise. There were only two reviews listed when I decided to give it a chance. And I am glad that I did.Our hero, Lou Norton, an LAPD homicide detective from the Southwest division, reminds me of Harry Bosch. And I am a huge Harry Bosch fan. Both have lots of baggage and the skill and determination to get the "bad guy". I love crime dramas that take place in the Los Angeles area so this really made for a great read for me.Lou not only wants to solve her current murder case but, somehow, tie it into her sister's murder from twenty-five years ago. Her "newbie" partner is not much help but is a quick learner and knows that Lou is a great detective and teacher. Together, they go about each step to uncover the murder plot.The book really takes you to a place in a social-economic group I am not all that familiar with. The author does it with style, honesty, and true grit. The plot line moved right along and it was not easy to put the book down. I just wanted to keep reading.The only part I could not figure out was when the author switched from first person narrative to third person and told the story of some older man that had an obsession for young women that would put up with his weird sexual fantasies. I never did get the connection of this with the rest of the book. The author tried to fit it in but I must admit I was confused at the end when all the murder cases were resolved.Other than that, I would recommend this book to any Harry Bosch fan or anyone else that loves a great murder mystery. I hope the author writes more stories about Lou Norton.

And does it with a fresh voice and a compelling protagonist.The dialog is snappy, the pacing is brisk and the twists are just right. Elouise "Lou" Norton is a strong, intelligent protagonist - but broken, and in more ways than one. I like the fact that she can acknowledge that and it's impact on her, without turning her whiny or needy. I also like how the book acknowledges the reality of being black and poor in LA, and a black woman at the LAPD, without turning into a lecture or diatribe. I will definitely pick up the next two in the series.Note: not for folks who don't like strong profanity or on-page violence in their mysteries.

Just starting to study Bach Flower Remedies. I have made up a couple dose bottles for my dogs. Because, animals don't fall for placebos. So for me its the best way to see how or if they work. I would say, that the book is easy to read, well laid out, with easy to follow instructions and explanations for deciding treatments.As for my dogs, I have noticed improvement with my 'aloof ' rescue. Who I've had for four years. As for our eleven year old 'Queen Bee, jealous attention seeking girl. I see change, very subtle but less need to knock the other dog to the ground when he wants to be petted. We just started this so, I'm willing to see where it goes. More studies are needed.

If I knew now, but hind sight is 20-20; I recommend buying the actual book versus the kindle, the kindle half way through had a lot of issues. The information is good to know and keep as a reference guide, giving people the basic knowledge and knowing what to discuss with a holistic vet on potentially prescribed remedies.

I have been working with the Bach flower and other homeopathic remedies for as long as I am able to remember. Like other reviewers have said, I have had to try to modify treatments from the books for humans to animals. Most of the time it was ok, but not always. This book has been wonderful.I personally do not agree with the forward written by the doctors saying that animals do not have feeling, but instead act and react according to instinct and animalistic behavors. I have been working with animal communicators for years to know this is not true. They do to have feeling just as you and I do. Anyway, outside of the intro, the book is wonderful and I have bought it for my vet who works with herbs and Rescue remedy and some friends as well. So all in all. . .I highly recommend the book!

Great information and the lay out is really nice. She touches on dogs, cats, horses as well as other animals and even people. Helen references how often the animals are reflecting what the humans are going through and this is very important. Sometimes it isn't our animals that need the help it is us, the humans. I got the kindle version so I have a handy carry along guide when I travel.

This is a super reference book on the Bach remedies for animals that can be applied to people too. There is a concise explanation of each remedy. I don't know how they work but they do. Animals don't fake it and can't react to the placebo effect. Great info in this book.
