This guide is fantastic. My wife and I just got back from a trip to Beijing and Shanghai and not only did this book provide a ton of useful information in it's own right it also gave the perfect amount of background to help us sort through everything we were reading on the internet.I had looked at a lot of lists of things to do in the two cities but it can get a little overwhelming sorting through a ton of different web sites. I decided to get a China travel guide to get a little grounding and found that the guide getting the best reviews was one specific to the two cities we were visiting. Doesn't get any better than that. The guide has a brief background of China's history and culture; information about etiquette and important phrases; a traveler survival guide, subway maps, and ton of other stuff. We really loved the four walking tours of the cities. They were super detailed and took you to a lot of awesome sights that you might not realize are so close together. The guide also gives outlines of four days in each city. The historical days were more interesting to us than the cultural ones but there is something for everyone. One of the best features of the book were the tips on the times of day to visit certain places. A couple examples from our experience:When in Beijing, on the day you visit the Forbidden City, start early in Jing Shan Park to get some great views of the city. This is what we did and when we were in the park it felt like we were the only people there. Later when we were down in the Forbidden City we could see the heights of the park in the distance and it looked overrun with people.Similarly in Shanghai the book says to visit Yu Gardens right when it opens. Again, following that advice we spent a peaceful hour in a beautiful garden. A couple days later we went back to that area a little later in the morning to have tea in the Huxinting Teahouse and Yu Gardens was a mad house. The garden might still be beautiful but the whole ambiance of the place would be ruined.I really can't say enough about this guide book. It was literally in my hand the entire trip. I will definitely be buying DK guidebooks for our future trips.

We used this on our trip to China last month and it was a lifesaver! We didn't get a roaming wi-fi thing, so we used the book anywhere we went. It gives ideas for "walks" around the city when we weren't sure what to do. I will say one walk we did in Shanghai the book had numbers on the map, but they really weren't where the numbers were. It still walked us the correct way and we saw everything, but it just wasn't right where the book showed it was.It has a large pull out laminated map that you can keep in your bag while out walking around. There are train maps on that as well as in the back cover of the book. THAT was a huge help! Also, I don't like filling my bag with pamphlets from every place we go to, so I could just use the book when we walk through some big tourist areas like The Forbidden City to tell me about it.I've loaned it out to a friend going this fall and then will pass it on to another friend that will travel there next year, so it's getting a lot of use!

The information is minimal and badly organized. I usually use Lonely Planet for my trips and this time since I was looking for a guide for both Beijing and Shanghai, I decided to buy DK Eyewitness and I have to say this will be my last time buying a guide from them. For example, you are in a neighborhood, you don't have internet connection, and want to find a place to eat. There are of course recommendations in the book (somewhere in the end) and there is no way that you can find thier locations, using the address and their map. Lonely Planet numbers its bars/restaurants etc and use the same number on the map which can be found around the same pages. I can go on for more ... bottom line: never DK Eyewitness guide for me.

I just did three weeks in Shanghai and Beijing in April as a tourist. Fortunately, the latest edition of the Eyewitness Travel Guide had just come out. Both cities are changing so rapidly, it was nice to have the latest version, e.g., subways. I've relied on Eyewitness guides for travel in Europe and this was the first time I used one for Asia. I like their architectural focus since I'm an architectural historian. And being an old fogey, I still go with a paper version, especially behind the Great Firewall of China where certain websites are not always accessible. The book did very well covering what I needed and getting me around. I had bought it specifically for the laminated tear out map of the two cities, which was really nice, especially for the subways. However, I ended up relying mostly on the GPS function of my smart phone to pinpoint exactly where I was. The book of course doesn't cover everything, so I supplemented with Lonely Planet's Discover China, which was also very good. Most importantly, both books are very good at preparing for the journey.I can't think of anything to add or subtract from the book, which is a good sign. There could always be more but weight is a concern with any book. This one is a little lighter weight than the Lonely Planet China, but then again, it only covers Shanghai and Beijing. With electronic versions, weight of course, wouldn't matter.

This book seems to be more of a history lesson. It only list some places to eat or things to see or do and it's mostly super touristy things. This book didn't make it any difference; it's feels as if I could of learned everything in the book during my stay there and I didn't need to get this book. I feel like the author of this book did not understand what this city or country is about and just threw in whatever he felt like. It seems like DK Eyewitness is horrible with Asian countries. There is no understanding of any of the countries or cities whenever they publish a book for an Asian destination.

Arthur Ashe: A Life, by Raymond Arsenault

Review

“For those who have long admired Ashe, this close look at his life offers even more evidence that he was more than a great player, he was an extraordinary person. . . . Arthur Ashe: A Life is among the best books about tennis I’ve ever read — it’s a deep, detailed, thoughtful chronicle of one of the country’s best and most important players.” (Touré The New York Times Book Review)"[A] wide-ranging, massively researched and thoroughly absorbing biography."    (Gene Seymour USA Today)“A thoroughly captivating biography. . . . With great dexterity, Arsenault juxtaposes Ashe’s tennis journey with touchstone moments of the ’60s. . . . As this book eloquently reveals, one can only wonder and shed at least one tear for what more [Ashe] might have accomplished.” (Joel Drucker The San Francisco Chronicle)“An insightful narrative of the evolution of a remarkable human being.”  (Michael Grunwald The Washington Post)"Finally a thorough and thoughtful biography of the committed activist and tennis champion. It’s the book this most admirable man deserves." (Bill Littlefield The Boston Globe)“An important interpretation of Ashe’s legacy and accomplishments, not just on the UCLA tennis courts but also with the deeds that defined him later.” (Tom Hoffarth The Los Angeles Times)"Raymond Arsenault's magisterial biography of Arthur Ashe reconstructs the life of a true gentleman and scholar-athlete, a champion on and off the court who became one of the most admirable figures in the history of sports." (Ambassador Andrew Young)“Masterful. . . . Arsenault's effort to document Ashe's full life in one volume is commendable and will serve as the standard work on Ashe for some time.” (Library Journal (starred review))“Written gracefully by historian Raymond Arsenault. . . . This biography is a laudable achievement. Arsenault moves seamlessly between sports and social history, marking time with tennis competitions and civil-rights milestones.” (David Takami Seattle Times)“No modern athlete, with the exception of Muhammad Ali, has altered our cultural and political landscape as fully as Arthur Ashe. . . . Rarely has the story of a life and its times been threaded together so elegantly.  A marvelous read.”    (David M. Oshinsky, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Polio: An American Story)

What a wonderful human being and tennis player

This book was extremely detailed and a bit too much for most readers.

Around page 370, the book jumps over 30 pages to page 402, and the intervening pages are stuck further back in the book. Makes it confusing and you have to read with two book marks. Unfortunately this was a gift.

Noted civil rights historian Raymond Arsenault has created a posthumous paean to Arthur Ashe. One of the most storied figures in sports, Ashe was a great competitor and a human rights activist, first by circumstance and then very much by choice. For the price of $22.50, not an easy sum for a struggling family to come up with, world-renowned champion-to-be Arthur Ashe began his career with a cheap tennis racket. By age eight, he showed so much promise that a skilled tennis coach took him under his wing, and by age 25 he had “all the attributes of celebrity but one: money.” These remarkable happenings were centered on a young man who, as a child, had been so small and frail that almost any childhood illness might have wiped his name from the pages of history. He grew up, getting taller and stronger but always projecting a gentle, relaxed physical stance (except when tearing up an opponent on the tennis court) and genteel, well-articulated, morally purposed ethics. The ethics were the product of his impoverished upbringing as a dark-skinned son of the American South, a member of the black underclass in the former capital of the Confederacy, Richmond, Virginia. His father had made his way as a house servant for several prominent Jewish families, and then as caretaker for a large black park that included tennis courts. After his mother died, tennis seemed to fill a void in Ashe's life. When he couldn’t participate in local matches because of the color bar, he was supported in taking lessons and competing in other locations. He gradually climbed to the top of the game. With many firsts and a life that put him in direct contact with the greats of the sports world and others on the big stage, Ashe is a profound subject for any biographer, and Arsenault spent nine years on this exploration of the man who was the first and still the only black man to win singles championships at Wimbledon, the US Open and the Australian Open. Owing to his upbringing in a racially tense atmosphere, Ashe learned to choose his words carefully, but would become a fierce supporter of anti-apartheid initiatives in South Africa and, of course, racial integration in his homeland. He was arrested twice for his role as an advocate for the rights of South Africans and Haitian refugees. After contracting AIDS from blood transfusions, he started the Arthur Ashe Foundation for the Defeat of AIDS and later the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health.Arsenault has worked through interviews with those who knew Ashe, and also with Ashe’s own extensive personal writings, so that the man’s voice is heard again. This thorough account naturally will be of particular interest to sports fans, as the author assiduously takes readers through the star’s career and his matches with all the great players of the day. His likeness appeared on a US postage stamp, but perhaps fighter Mike Tyson displayed the “most exotic” tribute --- a tattoo of Ashe on his arm, denoting his wish to be more like his hero.Arsenault's book has the power to invade the hearts of those who did not experience the American Civil Rights movement directly. The many large and small ways that racial segregation could poison good lives and hurt innocent people --- as seen through Ashe’s eyes --- comprise a cache of knowledge that needs to be shared, noted and remembered.Reviewed by Barbara Bamberger Scott

"Arthur Ashe - A Life" is a brilliantly written book that takes you deep inside a life that still brings change today. This biography will open your eyes and heart. It will instill hope and dreams. It will give your brain a workout in what's going on today around the world and how things can change, when needed. It will prove to you how special one person is and how that person can help you see your dreams.Pick up a copy and serve yourself a ball. Maybe it will bring you to your dreams.

Arthur Ashe - A Life - is more than a biography of Arthur. It is a riveting story of grace and valor, with a historical richness for anyone who is interested in the game of tennis. Personally, as I approach my 70th year on the tennis court, Arsenault’s book revealed secrets about tennis’ past, present and future. Not only did I get to know Arthur Ashe and his family, but also the real inside stories of Donald Dell, Ivan Lendl, John McEnroe, Tony Trabert and a host of other people who have made tennis what it is. A must read for every tennis enthusiast.

As I close this novel, I can only hope for a future where racism will only be known through a history book. Inciteful, inspiring and well written.
