This book was above all else an incredibly comprehensive mythical bestiary. No other single volume I've seen to date can compare to the sheer breadth of creatures referenced in these pages. It gives a truly global perspective to the term monster. In my case, this book was everything I had hoped it would be -- a thorough encyclopedia on the subject. If you're looking for a children's book with colorful illustrations and a sentimental tone then you won't be as pleased as I was with this purchase. This book serves to introduce the reader to the various imaginary creatures of the world, many of which will surely be new to the average enthusiast, and hopefully inspire them to further investigate those they find particularly intriguing.

This book is exactly what it says it is. It’s literally in the title. While some people complained about the shortness of some of the entries, I thought they were of a decent length. The purpose of this book is to help you get a start on where you’d like to focus your research. It introduced me to several creatures I wasn’t even aware existed in folklore. My only complaint was that it wasn’t categorized by region. Other than that, I like this and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in folkloric or mythological creatures.

Encyclopaedias have always enjoyed favour as a means of presenting subject matter in a condensed and accessible form. There are a number of books that treat giants, monsters and mystery animals none however seems to cover the entire lot in one book including symbolic elements. In alphabetical order giving basic descriptions of each creature as well as its activities, region, culture and historical period. In addition to the basic description and explanation of the origins the author explains parallels to other cultural icons, common heritages and manifestations pertaining to modern popular culture. My only disappointment in this book would be the pictures although there were a number of sketches they were all black and white a bit of colour would have improved the visual effect of this encyclopaedia greatly. We have after all grown accustomed to artistically drawn and designed books.Mythical creatures have always generated popularity of immense proportion in literary works, film, t/v and the most basic beginning story telling. They are legendary creatures believed at one point in our past history to be real beings. Mythical creatures can easily be divided into two groups ones that actually existed ones that are a composition of imagination gone wild in a time where imagination played a large part of existence. Over time these stories become legends they are then transferred into modern day mythological beings or creatures through film and majestic art work. Each country has their own mythical and magical creatures, monsters and legendary heroes brought to life in a continuum. We are constantly searching and wanting to know more about these myths, they are forever haunting our imagination and will forever continue to run along the imaginary mind. Movies, books on superheroes are forever bringing these mythical beings back to life.

Mostly small paragraphs on each creature, not many picture references; yet can give you a starting point for creature ideas for storytelling.

I was surprised with the extensive amount of listings within the book. There is a lot of otherwise hard to find information. I would have given this book 5 stars if it weren't for one thing; there is no index. A book like this should really contain an index for those looking for particular traits, or words within a creature's definition. However there are listings in the back based on different characteristics it is not as exhaustive or all around helpful as a simple index would be. Don't get me wrong though, this book is still well worth the purchase. Besides you can search through the book for keywords on this webpage by clicking "Search Inside".

This book has some very useful information on a great number of various kinds of creatures including some I have never even heard of; I have enjoyed this book and it is priced reasonably.

I want to start this review by saying that as a parent, I really liked this book. It was well-written, fast-moving, and created enough curiosity to keep the pages moving well. However, since I bought the book for my 9-year-old, I'm going to add a few more points to my review.The characters come from a wide variety of backgrounds, which I think is great. But I found some of situations to be a little heavy for what I want my nine-year-old reading just yet. Two of the characters have parents that have had divorces as a result of affairs (other girlfriends). One child was born when her mom was still in high school (maybe 16 or 17 years old, I don't quite recall). Though these situations are real - along with the sadness, grief, shame, and guilt that accompany them - I don't think I'm ready for that to take up space in my daughter's leisure reading time yet.I realize that this is probably a more accurate reflection of society than I would hope, but those are a couple of things I would have wanted to know *before* my child read this book, so that I could have the chance to either 1) hold off for a while on introducing this book or 2) read it as a read-aloud so we could discuss these topics right then. As it happened, I was so intruiged by the book, I ended up reading it before I passed it on to her -- so for me, the problem was avoided. I'm definitely sticking the book on the shelf for a year or two though, and plan to bring it out later. It was an excellent read with many good examples of good and bad behavior, and characters changing (an excellent life skill to learn!). I just think the nine side of the 9-12 age range was a little low, even if reading ability was considerably higher.

This book is sooo good!! Realistic characters, (teachers, parents, and kids alike) awesome story line, awesome ending, great details and emotions. Overall this is one of the best books I've ever read!!! And I've read a lot of books so that's saying a lot. I just got this book yesterday afternoon and finished it at 7:30 pm the next day. It is summer though, so I guess that counts for something. But seriously I'm gonna go buy the second because it's just that good. All the people that said it was bad, don't listen to them. I mean if you don't know about bullies, divorce, and teenage pregnancy, then okay this book is above you. But what 11-14 yr old doesn't know about that stuff?? Anyways, I'm 13 and obviously loved this book. Oh and don't get me wrong none of the kids in this book are pregnant, it's their parents who do that stuff but trust me they talk about it like once. Oh btw if you liked this book, then you will love any of the books by Wendy Mass. She's a great author, and her books are sort of like this. :D

Ava BabcockMs. ShinePeriod 3March 3, 2017 A journey of classmates that stay strong together This book is so great it grabbed my attention right as my eyes met the page and there were many life lessons never to end. Mr. Terupts fifth grade class goes through an emotional rollercoaster that seems to never end, but they get through it by staying strong, having courage, and being true to themselves and others. It has emotional times to make you connect, it has funny times to keep you interested, and is hard to put down so you will never get bored or want to stop reading. In the end, we learn about dealing with pain more than anything. This story takes place in modern time. There are many main characters that tell the story in different parts. All the kids in the book are entering the fifth grade with a new teacher, Mr. Terupt. Everyone isn’t so sure about him in the beginning of the year, but soon realize that he is a really nice guy with a great sense of humor. Everything is going amazing for most people until something horrible happens and the kids have to try and find ways to help themselves get through this tough situation as a team. At one point in the story, Danielle, one of the main characters, felt very self conscious of her weight and is doing her part in the book saying how no one likes her. The text says,” The only time I’ve got friends is when I’m in Lexie’s group. Nobody wants to be friends with the fat kid. I don’t know what to do.” This was very sad because she really cares about what others think and is always pushing herself down. Another emotional time in the story is when a character named Jeffrey was having a tough time with the tough situation because someone in his family had had that happen to them too. The text states,” I’d like to see Terupt, but I can’t visit him. I can’t do it. Luke told me it was scary. I know.” [...] This sucks. School sucks. Everything sucks. It was better when I didn’t care.” This is extremely emotional because he has gone through something like this and now has to go through it again. Imagine having to go through something as deep and emotional like this. This book is very emotional. Other than all of the sad moments in this book, there are some times that can be funny. For example when a very main character, Peter, was trying to skip class by using the pass all the time but Mr. T wasn’t getting fooled. The text says,” If the bathroom pass is free, all you have to do is take it and go.” [...] “I take the pass all the time and the teachers never notice.” [..] “When I came back into the classroom after my fourth or fifth trip, Mr. Terupt said, ‘Boy, Peter, I’m gonna have to call you Mr. Peebody, or better yet, Peter the Pee-er. You do more peein’ than a dog walking by a mile of fire hydrants.’ Everybody laughed. I was wrong. He had noticed.” This was funny because it was the first time the teacher had made a joke. The text also says,” Luke mixed his junk together and it started smoking. The next thing we knew, the stupid fire alarm was going off. The whole school had to go outside and even the fire department showed up. It was great!” This was funny because Peter was acting like he was pretty mad about the whole thing but then said it was great. This book can be very funny. And , the book also is really hard to put down. One part in the story when all the kids were talking about times with their teacher and waiting to get the news about the teacher from the doctor. The text says,” The microphone moved around our square, and we shared different stories and memories. It was perfect. Then a doctor came into the waiting room.” This part made it really hard to put down the book because I had no idea what would happen. I just had to keep reading to find out what was going to happen. Another time in the story was when Mr. Terupt had just gotten back and Peter didn’t want to see him because he thought he would be mad at him. The text states,” Out of nowhere I heard screams. ‘Mr. Terupt!’ Everyone around me jumped up and ran toward the door. I couldn’t believe it. Mr. T was back. I started crying. [...] I stayed in my seat, trying to look small. But he spotted me. The room grew quiet as Mr. T walked toward me. I was scared again.” I couldn’t put the book down at this part because I was so excited about what was happening and what was about to happen. This book was super hard to put down. Through all of this, the children learn to deal with the fear of losing someone they love and the stress of it all. We learn that to deal with these types of struggles, you really just have to keep moving on and don’t be afraid. I definitely give this book 5 out of 5 stars. You have to read this book!

I read this to my 3rd and 4th grade class. I did have to ad lib some parts, like how a child is shunned because her mother had her at 16 and other children think she's a bad person because of this. Explaining why being a mom at 16 is frowned upon in this small town to kids who don't really know what sex is yet, was tricky. However, at the start of the book when then students are mean to each other was a great discussion as to why someone would be a bully. We discussed that this bully/child probably has some baggage that explains their behavior. We talked about how their behavior makes others not like them, but no one sets out to have no friends. Having kids develop compassion for these students was training we used later in the year when actual kids said or did mean things. The kids were able to still have compassion for that temporary bully. As the book goes on, readers understand the reasons for the bully behavior and watch them heal and become kinder. So many great learning opportunities to discussion compassion and bullies.

There aren’t too many novels I’ve read where I’ve closed the book and already start to miss reading it, but “Z” is one of them. For me, this was one of those perfect reads—informative, evocative, charming, emotional, humorous, and one that captures a very specific time and place. This is definitely the best book I’ve read all year, and quite possibly for the past few years. If you liked "The Paris Wife" and "The Aviator's Wife" then this is a must-read. I enjoyed both those books, but this one outdoes them.

The most I've ever known about Zelda was that she married F. Scott Fitzgerald who wrote "The Great Gatsby". I think I may have heard some vague rumors about her mental illness, and that for a while the two of them were the golden couple of their time. This novel gives you a new slant on their marriage, his career and the part she played in it, and their ultimate downfall. It is a heartbreaking story of young love's exuberance and ultimate decline, a glimpse into the lifestyles of the rich and famous in the early 20th century and the "roaring twenties", and the tragedy of alcoholism which shatters the lives of these two people. If you don't like novels which make you cry, this book is not for you. I think I used half a box of tissues while reading the final third of the book. The author gives the reader an excellent depiction of the innermost thoughts of the characters, especially Zelda's. Despite their weaknesses and struggles, I found myself liking them and hoping they would overcome the flaws in their personalities; but that was not to be. Love does not triumph, and the loss of talent and creativity on both sides is tragic.

This is a wonderful story! The tale of Zelda Fitzgerald has taken second stage for so long, and I am so thrilled it is finally coming to light. Though I've been a Fitzgerald fan since high school, this was very telling of his relationship dynamic and personal life. Zelda was such a strong female role model and deserves recognition for the captivating life that she lead. If you like this book, I highly recommend the Amazon series "Z".

I listened to this book on Audible and absolutely loved it. The telling felt true to life and really brought Zelda's trauma into the forefront. Who wouldn't take issue with her own stories being published under her husband's name? Or his heavy drinking? Or having to follow him around only to have him take so long to produce books--their sole source of income--while he forbade her from selling her own?Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge F. Scott fan, but "Z" told the other side of the story.Though there was some mention of Hemingway, it was more "Hemingway said this to Scott, etc." and less about direct interactions between Zelda and Hemingway. I trust Ms. Anne Fowler, as she has clearly done her research, so I guess that's just the way it happened. Still, I couldn't help but be a little disappointed that there weren't more direct confrontations between those two.Overall, a thrilling read. On many levels. Family, love, marriage, home, ambition, self-destruction, motherhood--Z has it all.

I bought and read The 4 Disciplines of Execution in January of 2017 because Cal Newton gave it high praise in his book, Deep Work. At first glance, I thought it was some of the same old, same old. I waited more than six months before writing my review because I wanted to see if what was in the book really worked. It does, even though, at first glance it looks like old wine between new covers.What’s in The BookThe authors identify four core disciplines that can combine to make any individual or team more effective. The disciplines are focus, leverage, engagement, and accountability. Here’s a little bit more about each one of them and why my initial impression was that there wasn’t much new in this book.Discipline 1 is about focusing on wildly important goals. Well, of course. People who use goals to guide their behavior and practice some form of essentialism and zero in on the most important goals certainly will do better. It didn’t seem like there was much new here.Discipline 2 is to leverage your lead measures. I first learned about the power of lead measures working with my friend Stephen Lynch on his book, Business Execution for RESULTS. Stephen demonstrated the power of lead measures (the acts you do to drive results) and how concentrating on them is more likely to make your results come out right. It seemed like I knew that, so what could be new here?Discipline 3 is boost engagement by having employees keep score. This one may not be obvious to everyone, but I’ve been keeping score in one form or another for half a century. I track my daily work and results. I attach them to a simple score sheet. So, I figured I had this one. There was a new wrinkle, though, and that was the purpose of a visual scoreboard and how it’s a great way to keep track of how you’re doing.Discipline 4 is accountability. Well, of course. If you’re leading a team, you must hold people accountable for their behavior and their results. If you’re tracking things for yourself, you should hold yourself accountable and not fudge. That seemed obvious, too.If you looked at the table of contents for the book or poked around a bit inside it, you may have come to the same conclusion I did and you and I would both be right. There’s not much new here if all you consider are the individual disciplines. Concentrating on your most important goals will help you improve your performance. Identifying and tracking your lead measures will definitely improve your performance. And, it’s always necessary to hold people accountable for their behavior and their performance. So, what’s different?The System’s the ThingIf all this book was a description of the disciplines, it wouldn’t be much. But the book is about how to use those four disciplines as a system. When you use them together, you get a positive synergy. Any one of the four will improve your results. Using the four all together will improve your results dramatically.My Proof Was in the TryingWhen I read the book, I was impressed, but I wasn’t ready to give it a great review until I figured out if it worked. I knew the parts worked, it was the system I wasn’t sure of.I had to make some adjustments in the way that I worked and the way that I tracked my performance based on what I read in The Four Disciplines of Execution. When I did that, two things happened. First, my overall results improved. Second, the time I was spending to get those results dropped. This stuff works.How the Book Helps YouThe writing in this book is clear and the examples are good, but there’s one “design feature” that I really liked. This book is divided into two parts. The first part identifies and explains the four disciplines and the basic system. The second part is about how to put the system into action. This helped me and it would have helped me even more if I had a team that I was going to apply this with.Bottom LineThe material in this book can make a difference in your performance, your team’s performance, and your overall quality of work life. But beware: you’ve got to do the work and it won’t be easy.The hard part isn’t understanding the concepts. The hard part is breaking some habits and changing some procedures and maintaining energy while you work through those changes. If you’re not willing to do that, don’t buy the book.The second important point is that the book is about a system. You can adopt any one of the four disciplines, or improve the way you handle each one, but to get the best results, you’ve got to use them all in a coordinated way. If you’re not willing to do that, don’t buy the book.One more thing. This book is not about principles or secrets or magic of any kind. It’s about disciplines. That’s good because it means that people like you and like me can make it work. It will take work and, well, discipline, but we can make it work.If you are willing to do the work and take the time and make the changes, The Four Disciplines of Execution is a book that will help you make a dramatic improvement in your performance and your quality of work life.

Interesting focus on execution. I really liked the idea of the whirlwind and how it can suck the life out of the most important efforts without the discipline to stay focused. It's always a leader's duty and responsibility to set clear priorities and keep people focused on them. The leader must also work hard to clear the decks for action on those priorities. This is where many leaders fall short in that they don't set the conditions for success.The main problem with the 4DX approach is it acknowledges and accepts the whirlwind as unavoidable and something to be worked around instead of working to reduce / remove it. Based on that mindset, the Wildly Important Goal becomes a special project that succeeds because the leader makes great efforts to fence it off from the whirlwind. So instead of fixing the workplace / whirlwind, you resign yourself to it and work around it. This isn't the stuff of greatness; it's a workaround.Great examples and stories (a hallmark of Covey works) with multiple pages of endorsements (also a hallmark of all things Covey) make this interesting and useful, but I don't think it attacks the core of the problem: the whirlwind.

I guess we all know what BHAGs are and now we have a new acronym thats sort of similar but different enough - the WIGs.What I really liked about this audio book is that the focus is on Execution rather than Strategy, its more of a how-to rather than theory.The authors have clearly demonstrated that it works and that many people and organisations are benefitting from it.It seems straightforward enough to follow and I'd wager that its a benefit to anyone involved in a 4DX process.Team leaders will likely love 4DX as its pretty clear what they need to do and how to do it.

Good enough read once you stick with it. First impressions (first 10 or so pages) is that is just a book bragging on itself but if your assigned to read this as a leadership tool it does get better as you continue. It has a bunch of Cpt. Obvious statements that seem to fall on deaf ears when said by non-executives so I'm happy some senior leaders respect this book enough to listen. It also gives you a good common vocabulary to express your ideas upward in a way they will understand. It's all about not letting your Whirlwind be WIGs.

Good book, not great but good, somewhere between a 3.5 and a 4.The key thing that this book that many leadership and management books don't do is that it mostly discusses the "how" versus the "what". In addition, it gives good examples of companies (a good variety of companies) that have successfully used 4DX, how they used it, why and what challenges they had in implementing it across their organisations.Negative areas are:- the book could be around 30% shorter with repetition and at times, what feels like needless fluff.- it often feels like a sales pitch for FranklinCovey.Overall, the book is worth reading if you want to figure out how the team can execute to a higher level without burnout while staying focused on the goal. It won't teach you a huge amount of stuff you don't know but it does tell you "how" and will remind you to stay on focus.

Too often, as leaders, we get caught up in the day to day routine and get overwhelmed with everything that we have to accomplish. The 4 Disciplines of Execution (4DX) is all about effectively deciding what are you Wildly Important Goals (WIGs) and how to implement them in your organization for change.
