Amazon.com Review

The Sermon on the Mount--now passing its 65th birthday--remains a vital and provocative introduction to the ideas at the heart of Christian Science. At heart it means to be entirely practical, as the "Science" of the name would indicate. Denying any interest in theology (there is no theology in the Bible, Fox argues), the author instead suggests that what Jesus was after was results: "Jesus explains to us what the nature of God is, and what our own nature is; tells us the meaning of life and of death; shows us why we make mistakes; why we yield to temptation; why we become sick, and impoverished, and old; and, most important of all, he tells us how all these evils may be overcome, and how we may bring health, happiness, and true prosperity into our lives." And the Spiritual Key? Fox puts it quite simply: "The Truth turns out to be nothing less than the amazing but undeniable fact that the whole outer world--whether it be the physical body, the common things of life, the winds and the rain, the clouds, the earth itself--is amenable to man's thought, and that he has dominion over it when he knows it." --Doug Thorpe

My favorite of Emmet Fox's books. Fox has a way of taking the words of Jesus and turning them them directly toward you. He's unflinching, not afraid to state the obvious, and not afraid to defy largely agreed upon religious conventions. I highly recommend this book. It will change you, should you choose to let it.

I absolutely love this book!. Emmet Fox originally wrote the book in the late 1930's but it's still relevant to this day. The very first time I read "Sermon on the Mount" (back in 2013) I had no idea it was originally published 75+ years before. The text is beautifully written and Fox had a way of describing advanced concepts first in complex ways then simplifying it down to something easily digestible. I believe this technique was used so that people with different backgrounds and comprehension skills can read & reread this book and still come away with something new to think about every time. I would recommend "Sermon on the Mount" to anyone looking to expand their spirituality or to anyone just wanting to broaden their horizons through the classics... and that's what this book is...a classic.

I was thinking that this would be just another book that would incrementally add to my spiritual journey. I was wrong, dead wrong. This book has served to reshape me in every way. I am in a 12 step program and have developed a deep faith through the holy spirit yet, had not reconciled my religious experiences and understanding as a child and student in the Catholic church. This book is a significant read. After 3 years of reading and re-reading this book I now have a solid foundation in faith that continues to grow. It has reintroduced me to Jesus, who he was, who he is, and is shaping me into the man God has intended. The book gave me enough understanding that my current "significant read" is the bible. I simply love this book.

I keep reading it again and again. I am not particularly religious but just love the encouragement and the positive view of spiritual life especially when we are bombarded with negative comments of all sorts. I like knowing that I can make a difference in my life and in the process hopefully in the life of others.

Emmet Fox commanded 1,000's of followers as a modern day spiritual philosopher and interpreter of the bible with his 'Scientific Truth' about Jesus, The Sermon on The Mount and The Lord's Prayer. No doubt his simplification of God, Truth and religions still hits home as his followers have a website for all his work and free downloads by pdf of most of it. Also known as Bill W.'s source for most of his successful Alcoholic's Anonymous Big Book teachings and 12 Steps that remain the most effective treatment for alcoholism today, Emmet Fox' works will remain timeless too.

One of my favorite things about the book is Fox's bold statements: "Jesus did not teach a theology. He taught principles." Don't let that worry you. He neverthelEss convinces us that Jesus is the son of God and is worthy of the title Savior of the World. And be assured that Fox is not wushu washy on Jesus message: " look either Jesus meant what he said or he did not . I we believe he meant what he said in one part of scripture, then believe he meant what he said in the Gospel of Mathew that we are indeed to turn the other cheek, love our enemies, repay not evil with evil but repay evil with good!.

This book is a “power of positive thinking” book and does not align with biblical teaching. Its focus is on the power of our own minds to change things. For those who truly want to understand Jesus’ cross and His transforming power, this is not the book for you.

Every one on the planet needs it.I have 2 copies. The hardback, and he paperback gets "loved" underline, margin notes, stars. The 8 Beatitudes, are the instruction of how to use your Dominion--how life works. But, misunderstood, it's meaning was lost and applied only to your physical actions. In reality, it is your thought process, and your beliefs, and your prejudices etc that create a problem. It tells you how to clean up your subconscious (which has all the power) , so you attain your Happy Healthy Wealthy life. Two points here: the "persecution" comes from your subconscious. Not martyrdom. Second, when someone is evil, you need to understand that, their Christ Within is crying out for your help.LOVE YOUR ENEMY and forgive, so they are relieved of that extra burden, and others who are futher along on the spiritual path can do the same for you. God is all there is, God is Love, Love never created evil.I am into Emmet Fox. In the Lords Prayer, Jesus knew that his message would be corrupted overtime, but the Lords Prayer "Our Father", could not be misunderstood. It is Jesus pure teaching, safe, that too is a must read. It would end all conflict.

Duck, Death and the Tulip, by Wolf Erlbruch

Review

"When Duck finally notices that she is being followed by Death, she becomes frightened and inquisitive. Death patiently answers her questions, and the two speculate about the great beyond. What follows is the construct of a unique sort of friendship. However, this is not a book about friendship; it is a book about life's most pitiless inevitability. Eventually Duck feels the chill of a cool wind for the first time and, lying quite still, stops breathing. Death tenderly strokes her feathers, carries her to the great river, and gently sends her on her way. This book tackles a difficult subject with eloquent, yet unapologetic candor. The subject matter may frighten small children, and adults likely will take pause at the bluntness, but the story is heartwarming and incontrovertibly portrays Death with a compassionate personification. The surrealistic yet modest synthesis of collage and drawings is true to the simple elegance and poignancy of the text." --School Library Journal (Journal)"Hans Christian Andersen Medalist Erlbruch imagines Death in a long plaid coat, carrying a black tulip. When Death materializes behind Duck one summer's day, she is stricken. 'You've come to fetch me?' But it's not time for Duck to die yet, and the two spend the summer together. Duck drapes herself over Death when he gets a chill ('Nobody had ever offered to do that for Death'), and Death offers Duck some end-of-life pointers (when Duck worries about missing her pond, Death says, 'When you're dead, the pond will be gone, too―at least for you'). Duck is impossibly tall and skinny, with eyes that widen like saucers when she's alarmed or angry. With the onset of autumn, Duck's eyes close forever, and Death sends her down the river, the tulip on her breast. Erlbruch's tale is full of unsettling contrasts. Death's menace is tempered by Duck's gentle, loopy presence; the sorrow of her end is eased by the memory of their friendship. Erlbruch does not offer readers explanation or comfort; instead, he uses his considerable artistic power to probe death's mystery." --Publishers Weekly (Journal)"For me, the gold standard of picture books about death is 'Duck, Death and the Tulip,' by Wolf Erlbruch. Duck meets Death, and she's horrified to realize he’s been with her all along, waiting. It's hard to describe how this extraordinarily tender book manages to be both heartbreaking and comforting, but it does."―Sophie Blackall for The New York Times Book Review (Newspaper)"Parents who choose to discuss death with their young children may feel this odd import is an excellent discussion starter (if they don't find it peculiar and macabre). Duck is going about her daily activities when she notices the presence of Death. Personified as a miniature Grim Reaper, complete with long robe and grinning skull, Death initially frightens Duck, who wonders if Death has come to 'fetch' her. The (not so) reassuring response? 'Oh, I've been close by all your life―just in case.' Eventually Death seems so familiar that Duck even reaches out to warm him after a dip in the pond. Touched but undeterred, Death waits patiently until one day Duck succumbs, whereupon he launches her (and the titular tulip) out upon the 'great river.' Erlbruch's text, in Chidgey's translation, offers plenty to talk about, with touches of gentle humor as well as some briskly summarized views of the afterlife. His illustrations likewise repay careful attention despite their apparent simplicity. Created primarily in subdued shades, they appear to incorporate drawing, painting, etching and collage, and they deftly convey both action and personality with a few lines. Adults looking for a unique, thoughtful perspective on a serious subject should definitely consider this―but be sure to preview it before sharing." --Kirkus Reviews (Journal)

I am subscribed to a newsletter off BrainPickings.com (check them out) where they mention books to read, notable writers, and children's books. I was instantly drawn to this book and I knew right then and there I was meant to read it. It is a children's book. Large print, large photos, simple, concise. If I read it in silence, I am okay. But if I read it aloud I find myself tearing up and crying at the end. It is a wonderful, special book. I am so blessed to have this on my bookshelf, ready to read and remind myself at any time just how precious this life is to experience the divine.

Duck, Death and the Tulip is an understated, elegant children's book about death. Personifying death as younger children do, this book leads the reader through a gentle conversation on the nature of death, depicting it not as a malicious creature but as a fact of life. Death itself wears a housecoat and slippers, and Duck is impressively expressive in simple turns of the head or facial expressions. I haven't had the chance to read this with a child, but rather purchased it to share with my Children's Literature class. Based on the research, this book would be appropriate for children around 8, as this is the age when they begin to see death not as an entity, but as an unavoidable event which they have many questions about. This book offers a delicate way to start that conversation, and unlike many other books of its genre, it doesn't center the story around a sick grandparent or pet.

I assisting my professor on a project about how death is discussed in children's books, and I stumbled across this gem. It's bizarre, don't get me wrong, but something about the story and the illustrations (I would recommend buying this book for the illustrations alone) resonated with me. It's not going to coddle your child through a loved one's death, but does get the point across that death is just another part of life.

Had to read it through several times before the subtlety and impact and images were pleasantly with me and thought provoking

Lovely illustrations, beautifully written story. The character of Death is a bit scary but becomes approachable. And the ease of the relationship that develops says more about Life than anything.

I"d heard so much about this book that I had to buy a copy in order to read it. It is a thoughtful exploration of life and how it simply cannot go on forever. The imagery is so unique, it is a book I will remember always. It is at the same time sad and uplifting..

This is a great book to use to explain death to young children. Not strong on religion but clearly accepting beliefs of others.

Illustrations are precious and I love the story-- this book will either be a comfort or at the very least, an awakening of a new way of thinking about death.
