I like the suspense the author created throughout the book. The characters were well developed. It seemed to flow well as you were lead to the identity of the killer. There were plenty of opportunities to be mad at a character just to turn around and like them again. 😊

Saw this book hovering on the bestseller list with the likes of Patterson and Coben and had to try it out. Was definitely not disappointed! Very well-written book with some great twists and turns and a real nail-biter of an ending.The plot and characters are what you'd expect in terms of suspense/thriller stuff, with the police procedural angle that I just love, but what's unusual is that the story doesn't focus exclusively on a single detective. Very much an ensemble cast, which I think will open up a lot of awesome possibilities for future books in the series. The author handles shifts from omniscient to third-person point of view very deftly, and, best of all? There are some seriously funny moments in here to offset the sometimes grim subject matter.All in all, just a tremendously good book. I've already pre-ordered book 2.

If you like suspense and antici.....pation (read this book to get the inference) This is the scariest book I have read in a long time. I receive a free copy of this book and it is well worth a full priced paperback or maybe even hard cover, and that is high praise from me. It is that good. It is a thrilling, suspenseful , mystery, police procedural. I literally could not put it down. I love the characters and even though there are several central characters I felt familiar with them all and I found them believable. Except the reporter who tried to redeem herself at the end in a completely unselfish way. Not her style. Anyway, don't miss this great read. Pick it up and see for yourself just how thrilling this thriller is!

I was fortunate to be given a chance to read an advanced copy of this book, but that didn't stop me from puchasing it myself to share with mystery and suspense minded friends. This is a wonderful first in series, and I've already preordered the second book.Omer does a wonderful job of creating a cop character that you want to understand and spend time with. Mitchell Lonnie is empathetic and compassionate, but also jaded and with a wry sense of humor. He's an interesting mix, and that keeps him fresh and compelling throughout the book.There are also some really cool secondary characters, primarily Rabbi Friedman, who add color and texture to the story without looking like a line-up of quirky characters designed to do that and only that.The crime and ensuing investigation are compelling, there's just enough dark humor for someone who likes a little funny with their grittiness, and the dialogue is spot on. I'm really looking forward to the second book.

This is not the sort of book where the reader can figure out 'who dun it' before the story unfolds in its own time. And to tell on myself, I did stay up really late one Sunday night to finish as I could not leave the ending for another day. Its a good story, that hints at the killers past without giving much away. The author uses characters that also appear in another series of his. I liked this angle, but the character of Zoe in this story felt a little off. Or maybe I should have read Spider's Web before reading the first Zoe Bentley book?The story could use some additional editing. Such as the potential witness who goes by Clover is said to be from West VA but a detective flies to Idaho to question her. Oops.

After a few good horror novels, it was time to change genres. I decided on a crime thriller, and Spider's Web was a good one. Glenmore Park has a serial killer, who sends his next victim a message with the murder weapon's picture, before killing them. Detective Mitchell Lonnie has to catch this killer before his sister, Tanessa, becomes the latest victim..Mike Omer has created a gripping new crime series, and I'm now hooked. Omer's research into police procedure was spot on, and the story was gripping. The cast of characters, from the police to the antagonist, was finely crafted. The action was realistically written, and this is one of the best police procedural novels I've read in quite some time. Kudos to Mike Omer for a great book..My Rating: 4.5/5 stars

What a good book! Recommended by Wayne Stinnett, great author in his own right, so I thought I'd give it a try. So glad I did! I like this type of book, and it started off good,and just kept getting better. Micheal, Taneesa, Jacob and the rest of the cops are shown to be very human. And now Zoe is in the picture! I have already ordered the 2nd book.

This is the first book by Mike Omer that I'm aware of. I read these out of order and this is my second read from him. The first book was very good so I expected this one to be great. Anyway it's clear that his later books are more seasoned. This first book didn't flow as well and the Character building wasn't as refined. However the story kept me coming back for more. The villain is really bad, although it would have been nice to see/read more character development. Anyway I'm still rating it 5 stars because I know a good book, and I'm pretty picky. I can see this being one of my favorite authors. I'm already looking to buy book 2.

These are all questions one asks when a murder is committed.Who did it?What was the motive?When did it happen?Where did it take place?Why...don't we have any evidence?All good questions....no answers.A complex case with an interesting cast. You really get to know the investigators on the case, and their individual strengths and flaws.

Convicting the InnocentEdwin Montefiore Borchard was a Professor of Law at Yale University. He has long urged that innocent people who were wrongly convicted of crimes should be compensated for their wrongs and injuries ('Preface’). Federal and state governments did not do so (in 1932). Some believed that it is a “physical impossibility” to convict an innocent man. So 65 cases were selected from a much larger number to refute this supposition. Most of these cases were taken from the twentieth century. Fifty of these cases are more important, fifteen are presented concisely. Innocence was established by: the appearance of the alleged murder victim, the conviction of the real culprit, or the discovery of new evidence. This does not include cases of pardon without an admission of erroneous conviction. These cases are mostly due to: mistaken identification, circumstantial evidence (where erroneous inferences are drawn), perjury, or a combination of these errors. There is no index to the people involved.Each of the fifty cases take up about six pages each, the fifteen supplementary cases each have about three pages. The ‘Conclusion’ summarizes the mistakes in these cases. The major source of these errors was the identification of the accused by the victim of a crime of violence. Besides the emotions of the victim, other factors enter (desire for revenge, support an identification made by others). In many of these cases there was a little resemblance between the wrongfully accused and the actually guilty criminal. Little scientific study has been done on the effects of suggestion or defective powers of observation. There are enough wrongful convictions on circumstantial evidence to be disturbing. Circumstantial evidence coming from different sources is less likely to be false. But evidence can be manufactured or suppressed (p.369). Presenting evidence of a prior conviction can prejudice a jury against a defendant (p.370). The use of the “third degree” to produce confessions is a public disgrace (p.371). Such “confessions” are a factor in wrongful convictions. Public opinion can be blamed when passions are aroused and demand a sacrificial victim. How many wrongfully convicted have been executed is impossible to say (p.373). There are problems in the unreliability of “expert” evidence. An alibi or collateral testimony which is false will be extremely prejudicial to the defendant, even if innocent. A defendant who is poor and can’t hire a competent attorney will be convicted (p.374). Borchard recommends an independent investigating committee to consider certain cases (p.375). An appeals court should review cases on the facts as well as on the law in felony or at least capital cases. A review on the facts could set aside an unjust verdict, and correct errors in the administration of justice (p.376). Borchard recommends the NY law that allows an appeal court to order a new trial if the verdict was against the weight of evidence or against law, even if no exception was taken in court.Borchard thinks highly of English law (pp.377 378) and its laws on paper. But that didn’t save an innocent from the gallows (“10 Rillington Place”) and the abolishment of capital punishment around 1962. Borchard urges the adoption of legislation to indemnify the wrongfully convicted. Any amounts should be adjusted for the devalued currency (or “inflation”).

I am still in the process of going through this Course, but I truly believe this is exactly what I need at this point in my life. ACIM teaches the reader a different way of thinking. This is psychological training rather than religious teaching. I am going through the material slowly, in order to ensure I absorb it!

I am well educated by modern western standards - I have a masters degree in electrical engineering, and a masters degree in business (MBA)...I am middle-aged so I have had plenty of time to witness life on earth...I was also in the US Navy at an early age...I hope this gives you a context for my review........I have to honestly say, without any reservation, from the bottom of my heart - that this is the single MOST IMPORTANT book - rather EDUCATION - of my entire life...Nothing else comes close....If you are seeking true happiness, inner peace, would like to really internalize "why you are here", this is the best work around....If you want to learn how to deal with your resentment, prejudices, and maybe most-importantly, ego - this book will do it for you. And if you don't think you have any of these issues - perhaps you need this book even more!...This book goes beyond formal religion (which I do not partake in), beyond meditation (which I've practiced for ~30 years), and beyond the Bible (which I've read but didn't really "internalize")....I am about half way through the lessons (this is the part you should focus on - the other parts are optional), and I look forward every morning to reading a new lesson - or internalizing the previous lesson...I like this book so much I am going to give out about 7 copies for the holiday's to family and friends......And for any of you with significant health challenges (like me) - what you learn from this book will help you.....Start with lesson one, practice each lesson, have patients, and before you know it - you will see the light....As far as some of the reviews on here that were not so kind, I will not pass judgment of these folks - but wish them well in there journey to "seeing the light".

The most shocking thing you'll notice if you open A Course In Miracles is the deceivingly pretentious introduction that never fails to spark intrigue.And by that I mean, ahem!... Check out the first five sentences..."This is a course in miracles. It is a required course. Only the time you take it is voluntary. Free will does not mean that you can establish the curriculum. It means only that you can elect what you want to take at a given time."Required?The only choice is when I take it at any-given-time?And yet, there is enormous wisdom in it.It takes browsing a few pages to realize that actually, it is required, because it is the only spiritual message there is.It is the same message we hear from anyone that has ever grown into spiritual high levels and tried to tell us how to join them. It is the way.Yes, there is a heavy "Christian" tone to the book. BUT, to my surprise, and unlike the stories I heard in both, catholic-elementary AND catholic-high-school (such was my luck) --- this book interprets things correctly.For example... take a contentious phrase, something like: "revenge is mine".Can you imagine how someone can 'interpret' that to a captivated audience of easily scared listeners? or, worse, can you imagine the reaction of someone who may be furious and stumbling on such a page?It could be dangerous.But the book makes the meaning clear, at least for me..... this is what it says (I paraphrase):Revenge is mine means you NEVER take revenge. You do the right thing, but you do not take revenge because the results of the actions of s/he, whom you perceive as your perpetrator, are NOT up to you, but up to a higher power.Phew!Early this year I took to A Course In Miracles again and found gems within it. I wanted to share some of the most interesting ones with you.Here they are:1.- INFINITE PATIENCE DELIVERS IMMEDIATE RESULTSThe first time I read this one I laughed. I mean, c'mon! Immediate results, oh yeah, ha ha ha.I decided I to put it to the test, that very day. I needed to open a new bank account, and I knew these things take forever. Also I kind of needed it to work because I was already late for work. So I wanted it to work.When the bank representative asked for the usual documents and apologized for the computer being slow, I took it as a sign. I said to myself: infinite patience delivers immediate results. Then...I said to him: "Take your time. No rush at all". (I was sweating inside)But I meant it.The account was open within 12 minutes (I tracked it). I've never seen that happen in a NYC bank before. I was early for work.You see, the thing with this spell is that it has magic in it: it removes "time" from the equation.The first part has the word "infinite" in it: We are outside of time, no beginning, no end, NO TIME.That in turn, is coupled with "patience", which is a human demonstration of infinity.The second part has the word "immediate" in it, which means NOW. NO TIME. And it is coupled with the word "result", meaning: something happens, NOW.NO TIME = INFINITY = NO TIME = SOMETHING HAPPENS NOW.And all we had to do was have an open mind and remember the affirmation.Stepping into the present with an open heart (as you would if you really wanted it to work), gives you an advantage...You are operating from infinity.Try it. You tell me.2.- A MIRACLE IS A SHIFT IN PERCEPTIONThe power of an alchemist lies not in turning dust into gold. That is just a metaphor to show the strength of the mind that lies behind such a miracle.A real miracle is one that happens when in spite of desperation, hurt, defeat, bankruptcy, we still shift our perception from lack, to abundance.We have our feet on the ground, we know where we are, but we also trust the infinite force that is keeping us alive right now, and we know we are abundant, in this moment, because we are here.How is that for a miracle?The Course in Miracles re-defines the meaning of a 'miracle' as something quite mundane which we can do only if we are strong enough.Why do we need to be strong enough? Because changing our habits is not easy.Looking at a situation in a different light requires humility. He is aware that he does not perceive his own best interests.The baby is born. He takes care of it. And the monk's reputation is ruined, of course.A year later the parents come back and apologize, they tell him their daughter confessed that the child was fathered by the butcher. And, that they want the baby back.The monk says: Is that so?The baby goes back to his parents.The monk's reputation is restored. Further, perhaps he now becomes a legend.We are talking about it now.The story survives because there is truth in it.---How does that introduction I told you about in the beginning continue? Eyewitness usually does a good job. This is Eyewitness Lite. Maybe the print version doesn't weigh as much as a regular Eyewitness Guide. I don't know as I bought it on Kindle. One thing I do know for sure is that this "guide" doesn't have much more info than a feature article from a travel magazine. Save your money or buy the full-size guide.

Didn't warn us how crowded it gets when the cruise ships disgorge their passengers all over the streets. Some of the restaurants are too kitschy for my taste. They may be okay for a tour group of old Soviet types. You can find better places on your own. Maps aren't very functional; you would need a separate, detailed map or pay for internet access. Ended up not using the book very much--wasn't very functional.

One of the greatest novels of 20th century

My wife and I spent six days in St. Petersburg at the beginning of a Russian River cruse. This light weight, compact book was very helpful in describing and explaining what we should see and do (in priority order) during our visit.

Nikolai Apollonovich Ableukhov, the son of a very important officer of the Czarist government, is a disoriented junior, who has a very bad relationship with his father. The mother has left them for an Italian singer. Nikolai gets involved with anarchist movements and with people from the show business, including a dancer with whom he has an affair, and who is married to an Army officer. As proof of his loyalty to the revolutionary movement - this is 1905, the year of the Russian defeat against Japan and of the beginnings of the Russian Revolution - Nikolai is assigned a mission which consists of killing a high-ranking Czarist officer: his own father. The mission has the form of a bomb contained in a sardine tin, which Nikolai keeps in one of his desk's drawers. Anguished and desperate, Nikolai walks the city, dressed as a demon, trying to impress his lover, Sofya Likhutina (who has left him). His appearances cause terror and fascination, and the newspapers follow him. Meanwhile, the bomb's clock keeps ticking...This is a very ambitious novel, excellently written, with plenty of symbolisms. The Ableukhovs have a Tartar origin, representing the eternal division of the Russian soul between East and West. The father hates revolutionaries and any disruptors of the established order, while Nikolai feels an attraction for anarchy and violence. Saint Petersburg, the city itself, is a main character in the novel, Peter the Great's "window to the West", just about to be conquered by the new barbarians, the Bolsheviks.The book's style has been compared to Joyce's, but it is more direct, without ceasing to be a complex novel, with a rich language, stream of consciousness, flashbacks, digressions, journalistic pieces of news, introspective monologues and other resources. The atmosphere's unbearable tension (as the bomb's clock goes tick tack), gives it a great intensity, as well as the mix of terror and black humor characteristic of Russian literature, with its alienated, eccentric, and tormented characters. But a significant percentage of the book displays his obsession with the prototypical Crumb female. Quite a few pages are devoted to portraits and figure studies of his wife Aline and other Crumb-type women with exaggerated body proportions. It's obvious Crumb uses distortion deliberately to express his particular fetishes.The format size, paper stock, and printing quality more than do justice to these sketches. I'd give 5 stars to the content of this book. My 1-year-old loves it and the amount of writing on each page is perfect for a kid this age but also educational. The age range is 2-5 but my five year old is way above the reading level for this book.However, both of my kids LOVE the dinosaur noises. I have to admit, it is one of my favorite books to read together for this reason. They love pushing the buttons and hearing the dinos roar. The last page also has all of the dino sounds together, which is my son's favorite.My only issue is the buttons are so small in relation to the "press here" area they show. Yes, I know my son is below the "recommended age" for this book, but my mom babysits for an almost 3-year-old who also has this book and says she has a hard time finding the buttons also. For kids on the younger side of the age range, expect to help them push the buttons, which can be frustrating when they want to do it themselves are aren't able. For example, for the triceratops, the only way to hear his sound is to touch the small gray area in between the four largest dots (shown with added arrow, the arrow is not part of the book). Touching any of the dots itself won't activate the noise, it must be the small gray area only.Overall though, it's a great book and I am looking into ordering some of their other options.

This is a great little book. It features five dinosaurs, each with a couple facts and a textured area that you press on to hear that dinosaur's roar. You have to press firmly in the middle of each area to trigger the sound, so if you have a little one like my 15 month who loves this book, it will take a little time to master. Probably the reason the book is recommended for ages 3 and up. I also love that you can replace the batteries (3 x 1.5V AG10) so the book isn't trash when they run out like some other books I have. The battery compartment is on the back of the book and can be opened with a small screwdriver. The holes that the speaker plays through are also on the back of the book, so the sound will be somewhat muffled if they are covered. Dinosaurs and textures are as follows:Tyrannosaurus Rex - metallic scales (can also be accessed through hole in front cover)Stegosaurus - corrugated cardboardPterodactyl - nappy feltDiplodocus - imitation leatherTriceratops - mirrored dotsAll dinosaurs together (a sounds play in sequence) - no texture, just a circle containing a musical noteI'll definitely be buying the other books in this serious based on this purchase.

My grandson LOVES this book SO MUCH that the pages started to break down and the wires became exposed. I have just purchased a replacement for him. The pages have colorful pleasing pictures of the dinosaurs and their surroundings, the textured surfaces for touching vary nicely and the sounds are GREAT! Wish there were more pages, but that didn't seem to bother my grandson one bit! I have also purchased the remaining books in the series, but I'm sure this one will remain his very favorite. The only negative comment I have to make is that the buttons in his first copy, that I purchased at Costco, required quite a bit of effort to trigger a sound. This is not so in the replacement book or in the Noisy Baby Animals, Noisy Trucks and Noisy Farm books I purchased here at Amazon, so if you get stuck with a "bad" copy, you might want to call Amazon to request an exchange!

My autistic daughter adores this book, but it doesn't last long. I have purchased this book twice and it's binding has fallen off and exposed the wires, making it easy for her to accidentally damage the sound aspect of the book.

We got this book for our two year olds birthday and he absolutely loves it! We had to practically pry him away from it to get him to open the res of his presents. The only reason this item did not get 5 stars is because it's a board book, yet it's a thinner board so the pages can get easily bent (doesn't bother my son, but it could affect the life of the book) and the buttons can take some time for a two year old to figure out (you need to press right in the middle of the "touchy" section. Overall, we love this book and would buy more just like it.

My 6 month old grandson loves this book. It has good pictures and the sounds are fun (some reviews complain about the sounds not being correct, if you read the words that describe the sound they are right, just not what you expect them to be). My only complaint is the area to press is big compared to the precise noise button and my grandson has problems finding the button sometimes. He knows that area makes the sound, but can't always hit the spot. Some of them require a firmer pressure than his little finger can make so he will take my finger and try to press it.

The book is great, it has fun textures and my son loves it; however, it was very disappointing that the batteries were dead when the book arrived for his birthday and he couldn't listen to the sounds. We got him two books, this being one of them and they were shipped together in a book box that most likely was crushed and run the battery down. As the batteries aren't standard batteries that we keep around I don't know yet if the book will work. Hopefully we will have no problem once the batteries come in.

This has been a long-time favorite for my three year old son. He was around 18 months when he got it and it really helped drive his interest in dinosaurs and especially the sounds they make. This book also offers nice illustrations and textures!! Would buy again!

This book was a good idea. It helps to explain what it really means to be Muslim, especially in America. But its intentions of bringing support and tolerance to Muslim beliefs and behaviors is undermined by the arguments of the author. Too many remarks are hostile or laced with malice. Too often the author criticized Americans and American policy and how it has affected Muslims. I'm not saying the author is wrong, but this approach is not going to breed sympathy. There's surely a better alternative out there.

Tons of data and numbers and justifications but little or no insights the title suggests. It's pretty aggressive and defensive. I was hoping for something informative and neutral. It is not. If acceptance comes from understanding... find another book.

A Muslim perspective on Western-Muslim relations during the first 8 or so years of the 21st century. We need to hear more like this, even if we might not agree with all of it.

This book is perfect for those who know little about the Muslim world. It is very relevant to today considering the Mosque in New York and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. I hope everyone that reads this book enjoys it as much as I have.

This is an extraordinary frank and honest look at what it means to be Muslims. It does not dodge hard questions that Muslims face about their religion, nor does it flinch from helping non-Muslims feel the sense of threat that Muslims often feel. It is unfortunate that toward the end the author's defensiveness comes through too much.

She weaves two storylines together without wasting a word or losing the reader. The characters are incredibly well-developed. The story is written so superbly; you can feel the chill in the air, taste the fear, and hear the baby’s cries. I can not recommend this book enough. Grab a copy today!

Normally it takes me a while to get through a book, but as soon as I started reading this, I couldn't stop! I really felt drawn to the protagonist, Anna, and her internal and external conflicts. This has all the elements of a classic ghost story -- a house in the middle of nowhere, isolation, unexplained phenomena -- but it also tackles compelling issues like alcoholism and not feeling equipped for motherhood that humanizes the protagonist and that many readers will be able to relate to.

Anna quickly realizes that no one will go inside the house she and her family are moving into and when questioned, no one responds. What are those strange noises at night, why is the house so cold and how come baby Preston stops crying when laid in the antique crib? Can Anna make it the fives day until her husband arrives? Loomis does a good job of keeping the reader alert and anxious. This is a terrific one sitting read!

There are so many things I love about this story, and I never thought I'd say that about a ghost story! The story is told from the perspectives of both mothers, each with their own challenges. I enjoyed seeing how they dealt with those challenges to conquer their demons, both real and imagined. Kris did a fantastic job of weaving the past and the present to create an intriguing story.

I've read her short stories before and loved them. This book was no different. It started with a good back story and you think you will know how it ends. Then you get to the ending and are thrown for a loop. It's a great read.

A young mother has to come to terms with the sins and misfortunes of the previous occupants of her new house. This is dark, but with a twist that makes the read worthwhile.

Kris takes you on a journey of two mothers from different times, with one goal, to protect their baby. Kept my attention the whole time. Check it out!
